Did Sony set the stage for E3 2014?

Most PS4 owners need to buy the VR device plus the PS camera anyway since it wasn't included in the box, what's stopping MS to launch a similar higher speced two device setup?

Because then people would think "Why do I have to buy another camera for this when I already have Kinect?".

Releasing a VR device without using Kinect would be seen as Microsoft admitting that Kinect is not the solution and they didn't beta tested in the future.... Considering how Microsoft bet on Kinect, it would be a pretty silly thing to do.

Not if the new camera is advertised as a new high spec cool looking VR camera bundled with the VR headset. But they can't use it as a Kinect camera, it needs to be a VR camera only, and it needs to have higher resolution/framerate than Sonys current PS camera.

So they introduce a new camera that doesn't have Kinect capabilities?

They would have to sell 2 complete different cameras and if you want to use the console to their full capability you have to connect 2 cameras at your console (and install them)? Add that to the market confusion and you have a recipe for disaster.

Eh I don't think VR is, at the moment, the game changer a lot of people think it is.

If the Morpheus is bound to the PS4's architecture it means it's fundamentally limited in what it can do compared to the Rift. VR needs big games behind it before it goes anywhere and there's not a lot of traction there. Plus, you can probably forget getting your hands on Morpheus as a consumer until 2016.

That Sony has VR over Microsoft is, at the moment, akin to Microsoft having Kinect over Sony last gen. It would have meant something if there was a single good game for it.

As it stands, having Morpehus is good for Sony but at the moment it's a future investment. E3 2014 will still be decided by first party titles.

And you know this how?

Because of the way the presented it. If this was ready for market, they would have unveiled it at E3.

By unveiling it at GDC, they are saying yes, we are working on it, and we want people to make things for it. (oh and none of you can keep a secret)

As someone who has fairly limited interest in VR headsets, I'm fine with them hyping it some more at E3, so long as they also bring the games. You don't have to focus on games OR new tech, you can focus on both.

I'm not really interested in seeing it until it's fully fleshed out. I don't want to see their tech demos or fluff. I don't want them to start trying to sell me on something that's not coming out for a long time. Give me the goods that I'll be getting within the next year.

That being said, this E3 will not be anywhere near as great as last year. That Sony conference was insane. I doubt the crowd will go wild this time.

Sony will not bring up the VR head set at E3. If they do, it will be in passing. They are going to focus on other things.
The headset is years away from market.

I would say it was years away when they started working on it after Move in 2010.

They revealed it now because they are confident it will be ready in the near future imo.

Those have more uses then just playing games.

So does VR even though we don't have a clear picture on what that might include but I suspect movies, virtual tours, virtual concerts and sporting events, etc. At first $300 may seem like a lot but once VR expands to other uses outside of gaming, $300 will seem like a steal
especially for virtual porn

They unveiled Move at GDC and released it a little over a year afterwards.

So does VR.

I think that's kind of a given though. I can't see much point to a VR announcement without game announcements. Otherwise everyone will be asking so what?

With Oculus Rift continuing to gain momentum, Sony is in a prime position content wise. It's really a matter of getting titles ported by the time Morpheus is ready for retail.

It's just another USB device, I don't think there would be much installing difficulties or confusion at all, if it's marketed and designed as a different product/device it shouldn't matter if your new cool VR headset accessory comes with it's own cool camera tech, your Kinect will still work as before for UI and fitness body motion tracking etc. I see a much bigger problem with the scenario that gamers might have to pay hundreds of dollars for a new accessory. I hope they keep optimize it a few years and release the tech for a new gaming platform instead, this generation won't last more than a few more years anyway. Keep it in the owen.

Kazuo Hirai enters the stage.

"Hello. Here's Harry Potter for Project Morpheus. Wow!"

Audience in Twilight Princess reveal mode, throws money at Kazuo.
End.

The headset is years away from market.

How so, from the impressions at GDC it has been quite positive, only a few tweaks here and there. I think Sony can easily market the device for fall 2014.

Yoshida has been stuck wondering around in VR and is living a full life in the game, with an IV providing nutrients as he goes. No wonder we haven't seen anything new.
