Digital Board Games Thread: Async Multiplatform Meeples

Do any of these game support local multiplayer with phones as controllers? Eg like jackbox party pack so each person ca see their pieces and select which ones to lay down, and an iPad in the centre?

Anyone try Heroes of Normandie? How is it?

Thumbs up for me after a few plays. Seems to be a very high effort project by the developers, meaning you can see the hard work they put in to it (as opposed to something like Suburbia). Interface/visuals/sound are all top notch. The tutorials are a bit lacking, so I'd recommend reading the rewritten manual posted on BGG (the official manual wasn't great, this rewrite made a little more sense to most people).

I haven't played any online yet, though, so I can't comment on that aspect. If anyone else picks it up let me know and we can fire it up.

Also played some more Dominion (PC client) last night. It's looking pretty good, but I quickly remembered that completely random Dominion can be painful sometimes. I played a few games that dragged on forever because there was absolutely nothing that could be strung together with the combination of kingdom cards we were using. I'm not sure there's anything they can do about that, but it's a little vexing.

Been playing a bunch of Ascension on iPad. I think I've bought all the expansions now. To be honest I'm not really playing it for the challenge and am just stomping the computer. I kind of just like watching the deck and combos pop off.

The power creep in Realms Unraveled is ridiculous.

I got Steam as soon as I heard it had come out (and it was Android-first, too! What a pleasant surprise). I've played 5-6 games of it now, and I'm really enjoying it. I can play through a game in about ~30 minutes, thanks to AI having no issue with AP.

I've always been a bit intimidated by the physical version of this game, and never actually got to play it, but the app just makes it all a pretty smooth and friendly experience - even the colors seem a bit warmer than they do on the cardboard.

I'm by no means an expert on the game, so I don't know if I can judge how good the AI is - but it's been pretty challenging for me so far, even with AI players set on Easy. I'm getting the hang of the game, though.

I recommend it, although the pricing is kind of harsh.

Hooray! New Star Realms expansion is out! http://www.starrealms.com/crisis-expansion/ New ships and bases!

Feel free to add me (Handle - MarkovChaney) for a game or two. I'm really liking this double challenge thing I have going on with a couple people. We start a couple games at a time. We end up usually each winning an equal number, then starting it all back over.

Totally up for Star Realms as well -- please invite me! I'll download the update and stuff later tonight.

I just started playing this free (but legit) mobile game called Subterfuge.

It's a strategy game that plays out in about a week of real time. You can dial in moves to do into the future (and see a projection of everyone else's moves), and there's a heavy emphasis on diplomacy and negotiation. There are already two other players PMing me to grease me up and talking shit about other players. These fools are most certainly going to try to get info out of me and/or backstab me.

GAF group game?

I've been playing a lot of it too! It's a blast. Totally down for a GAF game.

** warning **
Before you can do anything it needs to download a lot of map data and their servers collapsed last night - looks better now @ 10am GMT.
Worth reading the comments on the BGG thread before you decide to commit.

It took me like 3 hours to download it. Then the tutorial wouldn't start. Eventually got it all to work.

Really liking it so far, but still need to get a grasp on the basic strategies.

I would try it out. Is it multi platform?

I've been playing Steam against the simplest AIs and I'm terrible.
The AIs might be completely stupid but they make fewer stupid mistakes than I do.

I've just got Le Havre: the Inland Port link
Looks good so far, iOS Universal, online games are casual or ranked, GameCenter friends - seems like it is asynchronous. Hopefully the notifications work.
It seems to have a decent tutorial, though take that with a pinch of salt - I haven't had much time to try it out yet.
I'm Diesel Pioneer on GC if you want to try it out.

Catching up on Star Realms expansions and played several games of the Gambit set. So far, this seems to decrease game balance. The promo cards may just be broken on purpose since they're limited?

I played one game with a guy that seemed more with it than I am but I lucked into $7 early, right as a Megahauler came up. From there, it showed up enough in my small starting deck to rapidly built an army of $6-$7 ships and he had no chance. There's also that $3 card that's about as good as stealth needle, and the gambits are fun but you can get stuck with a lame set.

Still early for me - what's the consensus? Peaking at the gallery for the second expansion, these do seem more thought out to add to the game.

Hi not sure if this is the right thread, but I have the star wars battle front Base command game I really like it but I do not have an XBONE or PS4 to get the battle front game so as far as I know I cannot unlock extra cards or units., I am wondering what Genre of Game would it be classified as?

I really like this style of game, I am wondering if there is anything out there for iOS or browser based that is free to play and very similar in set up and style.

or failing that a board game that offers the same thing.

thanks for any help .

Hi!
I like Base Command a lot too.
I completed the game already....as far as I know next week EA should unlock levels 9-50 (!!!!).
I just miss the third star in the last level (Boba Fett).
I do not have the game Battlefront too so I couldn't unlock anything yet (I have to check if I can unlock something with the earned credits tough).
The game is actually so good I wish they make a stand alone version, possibly a paid one (unlikely...but you never know...a sync multiplayer would be awesome too).

As for similar games...Base Command is a mix of a miniature game and a (fixed) card deck game...and for some reason I feel it stole something from the Command&Color rules.
The closest thing I can think of in the AppStore is the excellent FFG BattleLore Command (only criminal fault of the game is that multiplayer is not a sync sadly).

Actually while playing Base Command I thought FFG could EASILY make this as a real board game....using Star Wars Miniature game miniatures, their small cards and tokens.

I agree with you
Part in Bold. This would be great, stand alone App and if they had MP I would like that, one person could take charge of the Empire Build a deck up the other the Rebels.

great news about the newer levels I hope they let you unlock perks even if you don't own the Retail game.
I will check out FFG games.

I don't know about digital versions but there is a physical board game that base command practically ripped off in terms of gameplay/mechanics called castle panic.

If you like solo defend vs the board type games you could also check out ghost stories and pandemic. Both of those have standalone apps and you could probably find a YouTube to get a feel for gameplay.

E: elder signs is another one with an app that's pretty good. Bonus if you like lovecraftian themes

I didn't mention Elder Sign: Omens because I do not feel it's that similar to Base Command, but it's imho the best solo board game on the AppStore and one of my fav games ever so I add my commendation too (be sure to get the expansions!!!).

Oh yeah, the only real similarity the 3 apps I listed to compare to Base Command is that they're games where you as the player play vs the board. You take your turn and then stuff comes up on the board's turn that you need to deal with. I can't think of any apps that truly represent the Base Command feel, but I if you like Base Command you'll probably like those 3 as well.

Brass seems pretty awesome. Haven't tried mp yet but the app seems well done so far.

The app is very well done.
The tutorials are pretty good at explaining what you can do.
Being new to the game I don't know what a good decision from a bad one yet.
I might need to watch the tutorial video when I get a change.

The multiplayer is currently email address registration which gets you into games with random people. There are Polish notifications when it is your turn. I've only had one notification so can't say if they are reliable or not.
Game length is max 30 days. You can choose the name of your game so you might be able to arrange something with people you know. No chat.

From the BGG forums the devs are getting some feedback so we might hear if the intend to enhance the game with invites etc.

Ticket to Ride on Android got a huge update which enables Async play!

Days of Wonder said:
WHAT'S NEW

• Asynchronous gaming (called "Multi Session Games"): play several Ticket to Ride games in parallel, turn by turn.
• True cross-platform: start an asynchronous game on your phone and finish it in the evening on your home tablet, Linux, Mac or PC. "It's your turn" notifications are supported across operating systems
• New map: India: first vertical map available as in-app purchase
• Adaptive user Interface: works great on phones and tablets

iOS pocket versions are essentially being left behind with an option to upgrade to the now universal ipad version.

I've updated to the new TTR version and decided to get the bundle with the extra maps.
Quite small on a 4s but enjoyed a couple of games on the India map.
You have to rebuild your friends list as they are not using GameCenter.
The in-game chat is also a nice feature. If anyone wants to try it out I you should be able to add me as DieselPioneer

is it compatible with the web browser version accounts to get your unlocked stuff (bought a humble bundle with stuff a while back)

Yeah it's the same thing, just a little clunkier (if that's possible). I'm curious if it'll show you an ad after you play. I saw one after completing a game, and I'm hoping it's just because I'm a freeloader. If people who actually shelled out for 'gokoins' (sorry, now 'ducats') are seeing ads that's pretty lame.

I picked Steam up after the price cut (playing on an iPad mini). I love Age of Steam but dislike its reimplementation as Steam -- and this app reminded me why, especially with the default map maxing out at four players. Specifically, I really hate how goods come out, the weak penalties against playing inefficiently, and how balanced the auction outcomes are.

The AI's pretty dumb/inefficient on even the hardest difficulty. The toughest part is trying to predict how high it will overbid (particularly against multiple AI opponents with different "personalities"). To be fair, most board game AIs are pretty weak (e.g., Agricola's), but in an auction game where you have to issue shares prior to the auction it is especially grating.

I'm hoping that the Basic game gets added in soon. The "Advanced"/auction game reminds me too much of the superior AoS.

I'm kind of a filthy casual / plebian, so I didn't notice any of these issues :P I've also never played Age of Steam, but if I recall correctly, isn't Age of Steam regarded as the more hardcore version of that line of boardgames (Railways of the World / Steam / Age of Steam)?

I do think the app is a bit woefully underdeveloped at the moment, what with the lack of multiplayer, and the lack of extra maps (and how high the price for those is!).

However, there's no other digital game like it at the moment, and I think it's a pretty decent entry point into checking out train games, especially since the app really cuts through a lot of the mystery and confusion caused by the board game's rulebook.

Interesting. I generally like Martin Wallace games, so I'll check it out.

I'm gonna give a random shoutout to Achoir, the unofficial app version of Acquire, one of my favorite stock games. It's free on Windows, too. http://achoir.domowiczcg.com/ There's apparently some rudimentary online play, but I haven't tried to get it to work.

I've been having fun with Baseball Highlights 2045 -- which is currently only available on Android tablets but I think is coming out on iOS as soon as Apple approves it (so hopefully within the next week or so). No online play, but the Solo mode is really good, and you can do pass and play if you happen to have a companion and not own the board game. One of my games of 2015 for sure, and this is a very faithful if low-frills implementation.
