Don't be depressed. Most people familiar with your work at DF know you're incredibly thorough and while you do have a console preference just like everyone else (PS4 it seems to me from your posts here), you don't let that preference get in the way of your writing.
 
Is this guy butt hurt that a Sony console has better multiplats this gen than his favorite XB platform? Why these kind of articles this gen? Last gen PS3 was shamed at every opportunity for lower resolution and performance and rightfully so if it was not up to the other version. But now res does not matter. This guy should not be taken seriously for his bias towards one platform. There are actual fanboys in the industry that some people don't like to admit.

PR Bullshit because they knew nobody was expecting the new consoles to be producing sub-native 1080p and it would be seen as a negative.
It's amusing to see the legion of the disingenuous treating the comments as if they were anything other than PR damage limitation.

If Ryse were on PS4 it would have been bumped up to 1080p as that would be one of the quickest and simplest image improvements they could have made which wouldn't have involved the rebalancing of assets or new asset creation. Everybody knows it, whether they want to admit it or not.

So are you telling me that all Xbox one games that are running at a sub-1080p resolution are due to the developer preference rather than a hardware limitation? It is curious that those same developers choose 1080p for the PS4.

People legit thought consoles wouldn't do sub 1080p? They both are. It was sub 720 last gen for some games. I don't see how any one could think that 1080p was a lock for the entire generation. I said I wasn't going to post anymore in here but I just want to say who ever made darkx10 write that post is a horrible person. The constant bashing is getting ridiculous. Sp what if someone has a bias. It's obvious a lot of people here do. We are all biased in some ways. You can't just completely strip that from yourself, it's human nature

I know I was done with him when in a previous thread he nearly flat out admitted bias, by admitting that putting in critics of gameplay in tech reviews was just up to his "feelings" about a game and that he didn't feel it had to be consistent.

As per your appreciation of "Sony fanboys" being "crazy", given your history, that's rather rich in my humble opinion.

Eurogamer's tech reviews, and DF in particular, have been shoddy for years now. I am not shocked by the latest Leadbetter article at all, it is merely confirmation as far as I am concerned, only made more obvious by following right in the footsteps of a poll that showed that many PS4 owners felt that resolution was indeed important.

If a website is known for doing resolution comparisons then try to tell you that resolutions are not important their motive should be questioned.

I understand being dissatisfied by a website not meeting your standards but I've always thought those mild gameplay critiques was one point of contention entirely fueled by console wars sentiments

They do tech analysis not just resolution comparisons.

That's like saying top gear is Bullshit because they said this car is slower than this car but it's more fun to drive. Maybe a more fun driving experience is better than just the top speed the car can hit. There's so many factors to an image than just resolution but it's all people seem to go on about here. It is kind of annoying
 
So from talking about gameplay in technical comparisons to starting to question resolution as a factor at all, I guess it's safe to say that Digital Foundry has gone to the dark side and is slowly rebranding to another "me too" games column.

Of course resolution matters, especially to the core audience of their comparisons. The regular joe who plays games does not concern me, nor should he dictate the standards from which a technical column conducts their reviews. These comparisons used to be made for people who CARE about the details in the first place.

If we're referring to exclusive games here, and not games that simply had a PS4 version as the lead... then yea, pretty much. Anything that's causing the game to be dropped to 900p in an exclusive has an alternative. If the developer doesn't want to pursue that alternative then they're making a choice to drop the resolution rather than make the changes required for the game to run at 1080p. The reason this happens less on the PS4 (although it still does sometimes happen) is mostly the same reason why we aren't seeing many 720p games on the Xbox One compared to say the Wii U... less things require the tradeoff. But the Xbox One could have every exclusive at 1080p if that's what was most important to each dev, just like the Wii U also could. There's other stuff they'd prefer to put in their games instead though.

But how does that apply here? This site does comparisons of multiplatform games. If the only difference ends up being resolution 9/10 times then it is rather disingenuous to say that it doesn't matter. It is clearly a differentiator. Often the only differentiator, so why wouldn't it matter. Developers have made the choice to stick with the same graphical effects between multiplatform releases with the only difference being resolution. What else do you want people to go on about here. Some other magical mcguffin that doesn't exist? Would that be less annoying?
 
Whoever says resolution doesn't matter in gaming is either a liar or somebody who sticks to text based adventure games, and even for some of those resolution matters (have fun reading paragraphs at a really low resolution). With that said, as resolution increases there are other things to consider, and a balance to achieve as one number impacts another. FPS, for instance, as others have said. Just like resolution though there's a point where our eyes and brain just 'bottleneck' when it comes to FPS.

Well top gear isn't only about speed. They also take in to account price, precision around corners, comfort levels, noise levels etc. I have not read this article but i'm guessing that that's what this dude is trying to say. Graphics aren't the be-all-end-all.

Yet all PS4 exclusives by Sony 1st/2nd party developers are 1080p. It is odd that only Microsoft's devs are making this choice.

Bashing? Scrutinizing. I don't have an opinion on DarkX - not much to work with other than been an average gaffer with some connection to DF. As for shills and gaffers? They exist on GAF, in the past (banned) and probably in the present those that manage to stay unbanned by being sensible in their bias vs. their posts. Like a great number of gaffers. Shill is a very vague word tbh.

The ps4 seems to be missing af from a handful of games and that legitimately turns textures a couple of metres from your player into a blurry mess but a lot of people downplay that effect. Ps4 version of ufc has 4xAA doesn't it? Over the 2xAA of the xbone? That's important too

Less things will require the tradeoff on more powerful hardware. That doesn't change the fact that it is a choice and not a forced necessity. I can't believe this shit needs explaining (repeatedly).

Either way, yes resolution matters. The real discussion is to what extent? I'd love to see a study where you decrease res on a game from 1080 to 900 to 720 to 540 and you survey users on enjoyment. Mind you they experience the highest res first and work downwards. Love to see that graph. Personally I want 1080p everything, but it doesn't seem like that's in the cards.
