[Digital Foundry] Flight Simulator Hands-On

The graphics are AMAZING. I think this would be a great game to play if you just want to chill/relax. I could see it getting a tad boring after awhile. VR would be so immersive though...

Sorry, not trying to cancel this simulation as it has quite a following.

I watched a number of YouTube videos on this and those guys are hardcore flight sim.

Don't get upset.
Sorry :messenger_heart:. I had just come from the 'Next Gen' thread when i wrote that post.

I played with wheels, joysticks, pedals.

10 inches of dust in each, just scavenged from the attic :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Remember, this is not a next-gen game because it is always online and next-gen doesn't start for another 3-4 years because ND hasn't released their game.

as good as MSFS2020 looks in the sky, of course don't expect it to have the exact same high visual fidelity at ground level
it is a game about flying planes tho. you aren't going to be on the ground for very long!

i am quite amazed by the clouds in this. they look very realistic. some of the darker rain clouds look so good!

Here are just a few examples of the attention to detail in ND's games. The tech.

BOTW is more impressive than TLOU 2 in physics and interactivity.

MS FS is the most advance technically and it makes TLOU2 looks like Justin Bieber in comparison to MSFS power metal Sabaton.

We may not see DLSS 2.0 on this game, but we'll definitely get DLSS 3.0

Rumor is that it's trivial to add DLSS 3.0 into any game that supports TAA, which this game does.

But but but I thought PCs ran all games at 4k/60fps with ease.

If not even the most expensive gpu can do It, so 4k/60fps is a distant dream for 95% of PC players.

PCs are not ready for native 4k. Devs should make It at lower res.

  • Map streamed by the Azure cloud service is several petabytes worth of data
  • Terrain generation, skies and clouds of unprecedented quality
  • Very heavy on hardware. 2080 Ti/4K/Ultra settings nets around 30-40fps
  • Scales very well with lower settings
  • CPU-bound at around 70-80fps on Ultra
  • Currently, AMD GPU's performs much worse
  • 10+ hours of play-time used around 7GB of data

Time to sell my kidneys to fund a new pc.

Now, this is what I call next gen. This looks crazy, and it is probably the most impressive game technically I have seen so far. Dynamic time of the day based on different time zones, dynamic And realistic weather that replicates the real world weather (I think they have mentioned that there are up to 60 layers of weather simulation on top of each other and condition change with altitud), whole planet available in the game, a first game that shows that "power of the cloud" is not only a marketing slogan. This game should be a benchmark of what next gen is, not only because of the graphics but also because tech behind it.

Oh but muh Naughty Dog. See the bolded? This whole thread is doing just that The tech in FS2020 is light years ahead of any ND soap opera.
Eh, not really. Just because it tanks 2080 Ti to 30fps and streams Bing map images into the game, doesn't mean it's "light-years ahead".

Lol no problem, just shows what you think a game is.....to each their own. I think its just a boring simulator that will eat up your data and make no impact on the gaming world. I need great gameplay....but that my opinion....enjoy the simulator bro....the clouds look fantastic.

How many videos about Kojimas walking sim did you make again?

Wonder how this will be priced considering the data streaming off Azure. Will it be a one time purchase? Aircraft as MT similar to DCS? Subscription? Ads?

Why wasn't the same passion and care taken with Halo Infinite visuals? Every other MS team and project seem to know what they're doing except Bonnie Ross and her Island of Misfit Diversity Hires.
Multiple reports say 343 is worst managed studio inside MS. All other MS studios collaborate with each other but no one collaborates with 343. They got very arrogant and abusive heads with no one creative vision. Its a travesty that our beloved Halo franchise is with them.

When I don't like and don't see any point in comparing Flight Simulator to The Last of Us, downplaying the tech on display here is just silly.

I love the BF controls. I miss playing helicopters being in Battlefield.
Me too! They did show in the video how the control schemes are scaleable - so you can make it as easy or complex (realistic?) as you wish. I think it's trying to be as acccessible as possible, which I think is great.

I'm intrigued as to how well I'll be able to run it, I have a 'mixed up' PC. A 9900k at 5.1GHz, 32GB of 3200 RAM - but an aging 1070 FTW and a sluggish 30Mbps internet connection and a 1440p monitor, I hope for mostly High settings, but not confident...

I reckon you can easily run high settings with that spec. There are various different data settings so you can tune that to your connection restrictions. In the current build you have to be online all the time but I believe there is going to be an offline mode in the full release where you can download a specific area of the world, there is a low bandwidth mode where you can just stream in the bing maps and nothing else and (amongst others) there is the full mode where it will stream in the Bing maps and then stream in 3D assets to overlay on top. The data usage options look to be really tuneable.

This game looks very scaleable and already looks fantastic on medium / high settings so it will probably run fine on my setup. Thinking of even getting a Logitech joystick for this.

This guy says it runs smooth on his GTX 1080 on Ultra, but he don't have an FPS counter and maybe thinks around 30-40 fps is smooth.

When you get closer to the terrain its nowhere near as impressive

Landmarks though have higher fidelity models.

Of course you can't expect to have that kind of fidelity on any random building.

Still, it's the biggest jump in scope and detail we've ever seen. Anyone failing to understand that is just stupid or trolling.

Scope? Haven't Flight simulator always have had the entire world to explore? Also in terms of detail, the cities and everything are really simple geometry models. They just give the illusion of detail from far away. The tech is very impressive and accurate layout for the whole world is definitely next level tech, but in terms of pure graphics this isn't on the level of the epic demo imo. There is nothing next gen here except for the AI algorithm that converts 2d map images to 3d models as far as I have seen.

That's just downplaying it, really. And it doesn't mean there aren't other projects that are equally impressive.

Watch the video if you haven't already.

Glad waiting until the 3080ti drops for this.

Did someone just post ND corridor gifs compared to the entire world. Next level autism.

Xbox is water king regardless of phase state. But on a serious note, low terrain detail and reduced geometry architecture isn't uncommon on a flight sim. As long as airports maintain a high degree of fidelity and not very aggressive LOD'ing on approach you will never know the difference.
