Digital Foundry: Halo 5 Hands-On Tech Analysis/Frame-Rate Test

Wouldn't call resolution superficial, but to each their own.

Personally, I don't see the need for every game to be 60fps. Halo has done just find at 30fps, it's not like it was in dire need of a bump to 60fps.

30fps is one of the reasons I couldn't really get into Halo.

Sounds great. I take a locked frame rate over non-dynamic resolution and AF anytime.

Depends how long the instance is.

I haven't played a recent game that has it. Did anyone notice in COD AW ?

AW is locked resolution (13xxX1080) with all over the place framerate. The other notable game that uses it is Wolfenstein The New Order, but that is also a pretty much locked 60fps game and the resolution drop is very infrequent.

People need to also keep in mind the game isn't out yet and we don't know how old this build is. Scaling from 1920 x 1080 to 1152 x 810 is probably from an older build, but they got the 60fps lock so they can continue to optimize so that resolution drops less frequently (and to a higher a resolution). Overall, the game looks great and will definitely play great at a locked 60fps. I absolutely abhor big frame rate drops (or consistent drops) so this is fantastic.

Fantastic stuff. I was worried that 343 would sacrifice quite a few things but be unable to hit 60 locked.

But hitting 60 locked makes it easier to accept the loss of both graphical effects and game features.

Really impressed by 343's decision to prioritize frame-rate over all else, I'm really looking forward to playing Halo in 60FPS. I'm not concerned with the dynamic resolution one bit honestly, if things are so hectic that the game fades to 810p, I'll likely be too deep into the shit to notice, and when everything calms down, my nice crisp visuals will return. This game looks like it feels and plays amazing, and those are way more important in the long run than the best-possible visuals at all times.

right, the video does say work in progress. Having practically locked frame 60fps before the game is even out is a good sign.

The locked frame-rate is very impressive, but the wide variation in resolution seems a little concerning.

To suddenly go from crisp visuals in 1080p to a blurry mess at 810p sounds like it could be more annoying than the odd frame-rate drop.

Could you tell the drops in any of the footage so far?

Seriously?

Yeah, same with Killzone on Sony platforms (Shadow Fall eventually got 60fps MP tho).
I don't enjoy FPS games for long unless they're butter-smooth.

I'm really happy 343i is going for 60fps. First time in Halo history not counting the Master Chief remastered versions.

True.

No, it isn't locked in singleplayer.

I didn't notice it much, but there were times when I did. It never went as low as H5 will go though, and it kept a vertical 1080 no matter the horizontal, which helps clarity.

Well, it is only vertical resolution scaling ( 1360×1080 to full 1080p ) in COD and probably isn't noticeable to majority of gamers. In H5 is in both directions.

Exacta.

This is where next-gen should've headed. 60fps at any cost. If you can get a locked 1080p60, then go for it, but 60, no matter what. SIXTY.

SIXTY FRAMES PER FLIPPING SECOND. THIS IS 2015.

60FPS

Holy crap, THAT'S a stable framerate.

I hope it mostly runs at 1080, but I'm not getting my hopes up, this framerate can't have been easy to pull off. I bet they can be at a near constant 1080 in arena matches though, which would be really great!

60fps and they can't give us split-screen co-op at 30fps?
The best way to enjoy Halos for me was split-screen co-op and now they just drop it with some excuse, can't say I'm happy.
Oh well, at least the people who play this alone get smooth experience.

I'm happy to see the locked framerate, 60 fps will make the great Halo gameplay even better
343 did an amazing job with Halo 4 on the 360 and I expect the same thing with Halo 5 Guardians

I'd compromise some visuals and performance for split-screen, and I hope that's still possible for at least Halo 5's Arena mode post-launch (don't crush my dream), but that campaign FPS on that build is looking good.

Looks like they did good in hitting 60.

I wonder if dynamic res will show up in more games. It seems to be catching on for XBO exclusives but not on PS4 or multiplats. I'd definately take that over 900p or less all the time.

And the award for the least informative and baity comment is claimed.
It's an opinion. I believe we are still allowed to have those. It's fantastic that they have a great framerate, but for me, just wish they spent equal time trying to make a game that is fun to play.

Probably when looking at the floor, in the menus or up close to a wall.

Looking forward to it.

Hopefully the game spends most of the time in the upper end of that resolution spectrum, but if it doesn't I bet the 60fps will mostly make up for it.

Good job, 343i. Hopefully Arena will be a locked 1080p. Campaign is already said to be 1080p most of the time, it's only Warzone that should drop, given the vehicular combat + large maps + AI + 24 people. Can't wait for the new TV ad this Sunday as well.

That's funny, most of us loved how the gameplay felt in the beta.

Im not saying your opinion is wrong. Im saying you didnt quantify any of it.

60FPS

Im sorry but I dont agree.
Nice for the Halo fans that are excited about the locked 60 fps.
But honestly I dont see why every game should target this, and "pay" the same "price" Halo is paying for it.
But again: if Halo fans liked then 343 made the right choice.

I hope more Microsoft first party studios make 60fps a priority in the future. I don't think games on consoles should be chasing luxury graphical features at the expense of gameplay.

Looks good, but I have no faith in 343's ability to produce an engaging campaign. Will pick this up at a reduced price sometime next year for the MP.
That's still my biggest concern. The preview footage (including that one leak) looks really promising though. Definitely better than Halo 4 from what I can tell. I saw a couple of large complex environments, good use of the new traversal mechanics, and interesting encounters that appear to allow a lot of flexibility in your approach. Exactly what I expect from a good Halo game.

As long as Halo 5 doesn't overdo the AAA whizbang giant scripted setpiece bonanza that 343 showed off at E3, it could be really good. I don't need Halo 5 to be the God of War of shooters, with those huge Guardians creating a spectacle in the background. Good solid level design that enhances Halo's classic sandbox gameplay is what I'm looking for.

Pretty impressive work! I have to say, however, that I'm not the biggest fan of the sound design in Halo 5. Everything seems to have a high-pitched beep, and I really feel that players do not need a audio indicator for a kill.

Seems very odd for Halo.

But honestly I dont see why every game should target this, and "pay" the same "price" Halo is paying for it.

It's a compromise made with the view of the best experience for that game. Until Dawn opted to have a framerate that could drop down to 20fps for better image clarity in a very cinematic game.
That was an acceptable compromise to make there and this is an acceptable compromise to make here

I hate it when games pay the price of frame rate for a bag of rice

First of all, keep the discussion on the technical aspect. Secondly (and lastly), despite you think it is uninspiring/unfun, Halo is still the most unique shooter out there. Cool opinion, but is also "uninspired". So again, keep it within the tech side, or back your claims up in another separate thread if you want to continue the discussion.
