Our very own dark10x goes in-depth on the different versions of Prey, and what kind of improvements can be found over the demo released (on consoles) a week prior to release.

XB1 runs at 900p, has random pauses in gameplay if you run the game off of external HDD, but works fine on the internal HDD, has better control input than PS4.

Both PS4 and PS4 Pro run at 1080p/30 FPS, absolutely no visual difference despite the game box saying "Enhanced for Pro", same controller latency issues, it's better than the demo but still the worst out of all versions.

Both have really long loading times.

"Prey is a unique case though, where the PC version offers an experience so much better than the consoles, that it almost changes the game. Prey feels as if it were designed first and foremost as a proper PC game, then shoehorned into consoles."

For more information on how Prey runs on low-to-midrange PC hardware, check out the other Digital Foundry video from earlier this week, and visit GAF's PC performance thread for tips on further improving performance and image quality.

Edit:
It really is a shame that Arkane/Bethesda fumbled so many aspects of this release - an unflattering demo, terrible input latency on the console where statistically most copies would be sold, generally subpar performance on both consoles, advertised but non-existent PS4 Pro support, little marketing and no pre-release review copies for the press - because if they hadn't burned so many consumers, many more people would have picked it up and realized how truly fantastic this game is, especially on PC where performance is basically a non-issue. It's easily one of the best games I've played in the last 10 years, and it's disheartening to think that it won't reach as big an audience as it could have otherwise.

Very disappointing as a Pro owner. Not putting down any money on this. I don't want to sound rude and say something like "i hope the game doesn't sell and the developer learns their lesson the hard way" but .. yeah .. a disappointing release on all consoles.

As someone who was on the fence on getting the game, knowing the Pro support was missing would have made me refrain from buying it. I did buy it, because it was advertised as having Pro support. How is this okay in any way?

I'm not gonna forget this one.

Hope people with a Pro aren't supporting this turd.

Absolutely not. I was interested too. Maybe when they patch it. I mean, even just changing the res to 1440p can't be that difficult, can it? It should run it fine, so they just need to redraw the HUD and make sure the FOV is still terrible?

So PS4 box says Pro Enhanced but... it's not?

How are they allowed to do that?
It's really bizarre, especially since they gave away a custom Prey PS4 Pro in a contest.

It's one thing when small indie studios don't support the Pro, that doesn't bother me much, but it absolutely sucks when AAA devs don't. The game is fantastic but this aspect really sucks.

I'm sure they are working on a patch if there is legitimately zero improvement in any way. Crazy overreactions, damn.

Scales like a dream on PC :) I'm loving the game.

How is complaining about blatant false advertisement overreacting? They've been totally silent on this as well, so, you don't really know that they are working on any sort of patch.

Arkane, you guys can't keep fucking doing this. First Dishonored 2 has less than stellar PC port and now you have fucked up PS4 version of Prey. The types of games you make are becoming more and more rare and they need every bit of help they can get. Fucked ports are the opposite of that. And you can't really blame people who wait for sale or don't buy your games altogether because of these shoddy ports on their preferred systems.

Were you calling it an overreaction when Arkane released a total shit version of Dishonored 2 on your preferred platform? I somehow doubt it.

Try to open your eyes and see why people are complaining and you'll see they are completely in the right. Dishonored 2 PC performance thread was a barrel of laffs.

Colour me very surprised. I'm playing on PC and it really does feel like it was designed for that but I'm amazed in this day and age this is the case.

The lack of Pro support is damn weird too - the game seems to scale pretty well on PC so you'd think they could just leverage the PC version to provide something extra for Pro be it better resolution or textures or shadows or whatever.

It's a shame because its a good game but the launch really has been fumbled badly.

And don't forget that Dishonored 2 doesn't support supersampling. For no reasons.

Arkane is offcially the worst studio for PS4 Pro Support.

Not something you hear much these days.

plenty of pro version complaining, not a single summary to be found

It runs okay on consoles, really well on PC. That's the summary, basically. :p Xbox One dropped to 0.0 FPS but off an external HDD while installing the game. It performs the best after PC in normal conditions.

Oh yeah, input lag is still on PS4 as well.

Those console versions seem all over the shop, what a shame. I'm glad the sound issues have been somewhat fixed but that false advertisement of PS Pro Enhancement shouldn't be supported in the slightest.

So much for fixing lag on full release... Dishonored 2 input lag still fucking there.

Hope the console releases bombs for doing such a terrible job going by that pc vs console quote

I mean, they aren't unplayable. They play pretty well, even with the lag. That said, if you have a choice PC should be the one to get.

This is one of the main reasons I never bought a Pro. It's not even up to me to make use of the hardware, what a joke.

So is it even worth buying for an OG PS4 then? My PC is 5 years old at this point.

What specs? people get 1080p 60fps on GTX 1050s.

There is nothing to summarize really.

- XB1 runs at 900p, has random pauses in game play (like it just pauses .. think Skyrim PS3) if you run the game off of external HDD but works fine on the internal HDD, has better control input than PS4.

- PS4 and Pro run at 1080p/30 FPS, absolutely no visual difference, same controller latency issues, it's better than the demo but still the worst out of all versions.

- Both have really long loading times. Boost mode doesn't do much as the game already runs at a very solid 30 FPS on PS4. Maybe boost mode shaves off a few seconds of the load times but that's about it realistically.

The back of the PS4 box says "Enhanced for Pro", DF even shows it in the video but there are zero enhancements. Either Arkane and Bethesda flat out lied, or missed the deadline for release and may or may not patch it in later.

I'd say so. While PS4 is not the best compared to PC, the only real problem is the input lag. However if you're like me and can easily adapt to stuff like that, it won't be a problem.
