Digital Foundry vs. Dead Rising 3

Alright... whew, now that I'm done cackling like a hyena, I have to say this is really disappointing. I wasn't really expecting this to perform admirably, but this is below even my lowest of expectations.

Completely deplorable of Capcom to outright lie like this. Hopefully this was less a problem with the actual hardware and just a problem with the early development tools, which should be improving. Otherwise this does not bode well for the future of the hardware. Capcom's latent levels of incompetence could be part of the problem but they generally have one of the most flexible and impressive engines to grace console hardware, so I'm hesitant to blame it entirely on them.

It's what I expected from console version of Dead Rising. The sheer amount of enemies on screen would put a strain on any of the two consoles.

No it wouldn't. It wouldn't even put a major strain on Xbox One had the game had been released this time next year. This is a the result of rushing the game for launch and nothing more. It is not graphically impressive at all. There is no excuse for it hitting 20 fps and lower when it is running at 720P.

But why would DF of all places try to make the XBO look bad by analyzing a demo build and posting videos of problem areas?

I honestly, couldn't say, I don't have much experience with the site apart from their BF4 comparisons and those were pretty laughable by all accounts.

Maybe they figured the footage they had was acceptable enough to do an analysis?

For the action and sheer number of enemies I saw on screen, the framerate is more than acceptable.

That may be the funniest SenjutsuSage post I have ever read. After writing ten of thousands of words on the glories of ESRAM, Move Engines and SHAPE, he tops it off with this!

Bravo.

Indeed...

This really does look awesome!

The funny part is that at no point while playing Dead Rising 2 did I think to myself "golly, this game is okay but I wish there were even more zombies on the screen". The horde was more than enough before, in fact it's always been one of the big selling points. There are clearly more zombies in the screens which actually have them, but so what?

This is a game about killing hordes of zombies with a flamethrower motorcycle while wearing a Servbot helmet..it doesn't have to look great to be loads of fun. However, the frame rate news is disappointing considering that that seemed to be the whole focus of the development. Still getting it unless the reviews are brutal.

this is so weird. hadn't we seen the game get better, at least with regards to frame rate? im thinking of a build around pax or thereabout that people were saying was much improved. and recent impressions/previews looked alright - gamespot's Laughing Through the Apocalypse piece showed the game in a favorable light, at least it did to me.

its really unfortunate if this is indicative of the quality of the final product.

that said, im still picking this up day one as i think it looks really, really, really fun. im just shaking my head here, though.

I'm not saying that Digital Foundry's report is inaccurate, but I haven't noticed any framerate drops that severe in recent footage. An occasional dip, to be sure, but not an average of 20fps. If this is the retail version, its performance is disappointing. I still plan on purchasing the title and don't think this is the type of experience that necessarily suffers from that kind of framerate, but not being able to hit 30fps when you're already rendering at 720p is unfortunate

Bravo.

Going from arguing that the PS4 and Xbone are even (hell, maybe even secret sauce for the Xbone) to saying 16fps@720p is acceptable. That's one hell of a U-turn in a shot amount of time.

This has me a little worried, but I will still keep my preorder. Overall, the game looks like a lot of fun and the possibility of having that multiplied when jumping into co-op has me ecstatic.

If people posting these gifs truly think the job of a review is 'to make the game look good' then all is already lost. Those gifs have no place in this thread. They do not show how well the game performs. You're allowed to still like this game. But the framerate is the framerate.

That doesn't really have a lot to do with it.

I'll write that again.

Any sandbox game, where the amount of stuff going on can't be controlled or constrained by the developers, will always show framerate dips.

You can design your game to only use 50% of the GPU in typical situations, so that when things get a lot busier than expected, with the player mowing through hundreds of zombies in a flame throwing steamroller (with shadows being cast accurately by multiple dynamic light sources like headlights and beacons) you still have a lot of spare power to handle things without your framerate dropping.

Or you can have a game that uses 80% of your resources in typical conditions and be able to maintain 30fps for 'a lot of the time' but still suffer from framerate dips when things get extremely messy.

Point is the huge 'variability' in the amount of stuff that can be going on at once in DR.
Either you 'underuse' your hardware a lot of the time, or you risk a few slowdowns.

The point is striking a balance, and from what i've seen, things are not bad at all in DR3.

Dynamic resolution wouldn't have been a bad idea

You mean from subHD to 720p? 'Cause this game clearly couldn't have handled more than that.

1 zombie. 14 to 20 fps.

CAPCOM Vancouver ladies and gentlemen.
Ultimately it's Microsoft's decision to okay the release of this game.

And it seems that the desire to have more launch games was not good for DR3.

Regular dips between 20 - 30fps, some sub 20fps, random in the way that the framerate dips, that's not good for next gen at 720p.

Clearly unfinished/rushed.

I don't follow. Those gifs don't show how the game performs or how well the frame-rate holds up?

Is all recent footage and gifs suddenly worthless now that digital foundry have posted an analysis that doesn't seem representative of any recent footage? Hell, the only footage that's comparable to digital foundry's is from E3.

It would surely be something that's never been seen before if the game did indeed undergo such a massive downgrade before release. We have significant amounts of footage that show it with a relatively stable frame-rate and no texture pop in (as far as I'm aware) and yet DF seems to be the only site that has footage that paints the game as a technical mess...

You're a joke of a joke character.

Personally I think people need to realize that launch games will go through some of these problems. Some of these games aren't shipping now because they were actually finished.

16-26fps is unplayable. The game looks super fun but even if I was buying an XB1 I think I'd have to skip this.

Awful.

Resolution never made much of a difference to me, but I'm a bit disappointed they couldn't get it to locked 30 fps, even when they claimed it was.

Game still looks like a blast though, hopefully the drops won't be too intrusive.

I'm not terribly informed on this . . . but isn't this kind of to be expected for a console launch? I haven't been around for previous ones, but I thought I remember friends saying that launch titles tend to do things like this.

With that in mind, when do we think we'll see a smoothing out in games not running so "not-next-gen"?

Lower resolutions are generally expected, but framerate is tricky. That's really up to the developer to figure out how to run the game smoothly with the time and other resources available, and framerate drops are far more noticeable than a game being 720p or 1080p (just popping it in and playing as is, not in side-by-side comparison).

So on the one hand, the resolution bit is expected, but it is surprising that developers can't seem to lock down a fps basement. Mind you, Capcom/Blue Castle aren't that great development-wise, and Dead Rising games in the past aren't some crowning jewel of technical achievement. But it's a heavy disappointment and a bit ridiculous that we're being told "locked" 30 fps and that isn't true.

As far as smoothing out, I'd say no earlier than a year from now. Generally takes a year/year and a half for things to improve and somewhat settle in, and usually two years for the surface technical factors to stabilize. After that is generally where developers will start pushing certain things, moving the goal post a little further each time until they hit a wall there and try something else.

Last generation was a bit different though with issues like developing for Cell and the length of it. It just depends on how developers approach development and tackle the shortcomings of the hardware.

Edit: I'll have to look at more footage. Gifs are nice and all, but all of them look choppy as all hell to me in most cases. From the recent footage, the drops weren't that noticeable, so I'm not sure what to make of it.

For the action and sheer number of enemies I saw on screen, the framerate is more than acceptable.

WTF? My sarcasm meter is at zero, detecting zero sarcasm. Oh, its Senjutsu. Well, of course the framerate is more than acceptable for you. I assume you would say the exact same thing on COD right? With guys running around, things blowing up, camera moving quickly, bullets flying. Tons of action. So the inconsistent framerate on the PS4 version is acceptable too?

One thing people keep forgetting with these analysis and the comparisons between consoles is that for people with all platforms, we would like to get the best version.

I always waited for Digital Foundry to release their face offs before getting a multiplatform game.

They are the best at what they do, is there any other group that even comes close?

Sigh. This is whole situation is really difficult at the moment. It's a console launch and by definition the PS4 and the X1 both have to be next generation. Hence, I don't think this classification is an objective criterion for high-end hardware. Although, both contester claim this right now.

I also try to stay as neutral as possible and I'm not SonyGAF (edit: I don't even think SonyGAF is real, there are just outliers in both directions) or whatsoever (I own a 360, PS1&2, some Nintendos, Segas - damn, I just love gaming). But since Microsoft started to unveil their approach into the next present generation, I can't stop having the impression that their primary aim was to design a product mainly for renting movies and selling subscriptions for everything: a home-shopping machine - still with strong and deep gaming-roots.

Everyone knows, that graphics will develop over time by learning to utilize the given hardware in the best way possible. This happend in every generation and this will also happen here. But the Xbox 1 seems like to be already on a path to be outdated from the beginning. Games are fun, regardless which resolution or graphical settings (see heaps of indie games or simply the games from our past) - but I fear that Microsofts approach could prevent major innovations in gaming, when the developers already have to limit themselves to hardly hit standards which should be common practice everywhere within the next years in gaming.

I don't want to sound like I'm port begging here but this game definitely needs a PC version now. With this disaster of a performance I wouldn't even buy the game if I was buying an Xbox day 1 and there wasn't anything else I wanted to play. I would literally choose to have nothing over making 15fps (or worse) at 720p my first experience with new technology. The game itself looks like it could be fun in the gifs but I just couldn't do that to myself.
