I liked this a lot better than I thought I would. They put a lot of effort into thinking how the animal society would work, the different biome-neighborhoods of the city, how the different species would get along or not, the language, the way they move, the way they interact. I was really surprised at how much those details elevated what could have otherwise been a very boring, dreamworks-tier premise. I also feel that the plot of the movie -- it's basically a buddy cop film -- worked quite well. Much of the city looked great.

Pretty good content for adults in the audience too, including lengthy homages to Breaking Bad and the Godfather, but also a guy selling bootlegged DVDs.

Drawbacks: 3D doesn't do anything for this film; runs out of steam a bit in the last 20 minutes or so; totally superfluous shoehorning of Shakira (the singer) into the film. Judging from the fact that the film had 7 writers, I suspect rewrites added Shakira so they'd have an end credits song to make it feel a little more Disney.

Of the recent Disney/Pixar films, I'd say above Frozen and certainly above misfires like Wreck-it Ralph or The Good Dinosaur. I'd say I liked it more than Inside Out and my wife liked it less.

Quick question: Did you like it more than both Wreck-It-Ralph and Big Hero 6? I thought they were pretty solid, but nothing really special or memorable.
Yes WAY better and way way funnier as well.

I thought Inside Out was excellent, so this seems like high praise.

Do you live in Belgium?

Yeah just came back from another showing, this time in 3D.

3D didn't really do much in this movie, so I agree on that.

I'm surprised this isn't getting much discussion, I guess it's still not out in US?

and here we go, let me remind you The Good Dinosaur is a Disney release, and is possibly the worst recent animated movie premise bar none

I thought Inside Out was excellent, so this seems like high praise.

Well for one thing this movie doesn't manipulate your emotions.

Well for one thing this movie doesn't manipulate your emotions.

We have to wait until JULY 31st.

been wondering how people been making good quality gifs from the film... and I just realized that Disney pretty much spoiled 2/3rd of the film

Me and Doggie live in the Philippines, we usually get movies around the same time as the US or sometimes 1-3 days earlier. But this time we get it like a month sooner.

nah we usually get them weeks earlier

I reckon KFP3 would have come sooner too, but its original air is January and films that normally come out in December or January got their release dates pushed because of a shitty filmfest.

Yes WAY better and way way funnier as well.

!!!!!

Yeah, it's not yet out in the US. The release schedule is all over the place, just like most Disney/Pixar movies.

You mean a Pixar release....

So are you guys saying it explains why all the carnivores don't just eat all the herbivores? Because that's the kind of thing that drives me crazy.

Minor spoilers from a review

An explanation will be given at the beginning of the movie to establish things

I remember people saying that "The Lego Movie deconstructs the hero's journey!" in this board, to which I vehemently disagree because it doesn't even deconstruct it at all since they're just sidestepping on the idea. Just because the "hero" is unwilling and "lacks the power" doesn't mean it is deconstructed, hell, Lego's final act plays it straight. I blame RedLetterMedia.

Now Zootopia? This definitely deconstructs the hero's journey. You'll see this when you watch the film. Too bad people won't look much into it because "it's a big film by a corporation".

Yeah, it's not yet out in the US. The release schedule is all over the place, just like most Disney/Pixar movies.

It's still an unusually large gap though, usually the disparity is only a few days.

And yeah it's a Pixar film but it's still a Disney release I'd argue.

It's pretty much the first scene in the film.
It also becomes a plot point

Do you live in Belgium?

If you're asking how I saw it, I live in the US and got tickets for an advance screening from a no-kill shelter my wife volunteers with, but I resent the implication if you're asking for any reason other than wanting to get a beer with me. ;)

This sounds good to me because I hated the dmv sloths joke in the trailers. I mean, it was funny, but surely in a real zootopia the dmv would be full of cheetahs or something similar running around and you would get your license in no time.

I know it sounds daft but that's the kind of thing that really bothers me in a movie, even in a cartoon with talking animals.

it works because real life DMVs are slow as shit, a meta commentary

the joke is universal, or at least to me, since even in my country the driving registration process is slow as molasses

The sloths are a metaphor for the glacial pace our government moves.

hell, the whole government problems is pretty much an important plotpoint

this occurs pretty much early in the film but I'll spoiler it anyway,
the only reason Judy is in ZPF Central is because of the mayor badgering Chief Bogo to put the "first rabbit to graduate in Academy" in it to make him look better and to make his "Mammal Initiative" campaign look like it's working

it becomes relevant again in a later act but it's spoiler territory

But in everywhere where the movie is actually playing right now, it's called Zootropolis, so I don't see the harm in including the name on the title.

It's called Zootopia in Latin America! Besides, the name fits much better than Zootropolis since they point is that the city is
supossedly
perfect.

Watched it today and really liked it. Plot was fun with nice surprises. Characters are great and there are many funny moments. I reccommend it!

I'd really like to see a series of shorts or an animated series about
Nick and Judy fighting crime Lethal Weapon style.

Your wife is a saint, Stumpy

I seriously hope they make it more, maybe a series even.

Hilariously enough the movie is rated PG in my country.

Technically Jimmy Neutron already had plans for a series, the movie was some sort of pilot from what I remember.

So I guess traffic of this thread will go up around March?

From what I have seen so far it looks like it will be good.

I recently watched Inside Out after all the praise but it was a waste of 90 minutes of my life, so I am a bit cautious about this one.

but the idea is to hide it through good storytelling and compelling characters

also I saw your avatar so... :P

Which is exactly wat Inside Out does imo. It's a masterpiece in storytelling, and it hits the emotional notes because you care for it's characters and reflect on your own life (I did). The emotions I felt all came trough the story too ,
Riley admitting her sadness after pushing it away for so long, and letting it goe. Ergo: growing up
and not because some sad music started playing or because of prolongued, manipulative imagery.

About the avatar: I didn't particulary like the Good Dinosaur btw (though I admit, I am a big Pixar fan, and I think they are some of the best storytellers around), I just think it has awesome art and I loved this artwork.

Guys, hold on! I get it's a metaphor for the government and for the dmv, I get it! And I'm honestly not that way usually.

I don't sit there and think "So you've built this new death star inside a planet and it sucks all the power from a star and it gets darker and darker as all of the star's energy gets sucked into one side of the planet and then gets turned into separate beams that you use to blow up enemy planets? Hmmm. Sounds far fetched."

I can happily suspend my disbelief and enjoy movies it's just that, well, you wouldn't have sloths running the dmv and I was hoping that the jokes in the movie wouldn't be the obvious cliches and metaphors and would maybe use the setting more imaginatively.

while I know the joke is kinda lame in hindsight, I feel it works with the world building

like I said, the governement especially Zootopia is shit and if
Judy only got in the major precinct because "she is the first ever rabbit to graduate in the academy!"
, what's to say many of the sloths there were connected to the mayor for his campaign?

my main gripe is the emotions themselves, I feel like many of them were wasted characters despite being advertised as important (I am looking at you, Disgust and Fear), and I felt that Joy never got a comeuppance for her cunt attitude and while we're supposed to feel for Sadness she was too one note for me (which is weird, the other emotions displayed other emotions so it was strange for her to be very singular). Really the only character I truly feel for was the Imaginary Friend.

I don't want to derail the thread, but I don't agree.

Disgust and Fear were more sidekicks/comic relief characters, true, but I found Joy to be a very good character, who makes a great arc (realising she isn't the most important and 'best' emotion) Why should she be 'punished' for her attitude? It fits no dramatic need at all to punish her, when she comes to realisation herself...

Sadness being 'one note' is dramatically the best for the story. She is a real buzzbreaker, seemingly sucking the joy out of everything, but Joy (and we as an audience) learn that that's not bad at all. That it is important to allow yourself to be sad from time to time.

To get back on topic. I enjoyed Zootopia immensly, but I never really felt anything for it's characters. It's a very fun and exciting flick, but it doesn't tell me something on an emotional level. I even found it's message really on the nose, while Inside Outs message originates from the story itself (the story is crafted to bring the message home on a natural way), while Zootopia is more of a 'fun & games' movie, crafted around a simple theme and morale.

Zootopia made me laugh a lot, but I will have forgotten most of it in a few weeks. Inside out made me laugh a lot and touched me on a deeper, emotional level, and I will remember it fondly for years to come.

She pretty much mistreated everyone with her bossy attitude among other things. Hell, Sadness got so much abuse. And you can still make Sadness not a one note, like make her find comfort through sadness, but eh, that'd be too hard I guess. But in any case yeah I don't want to derail this thread too.

And yeah Zootopia's message is on the nose, that's a given. But honestly I feel Nick and Judy's development as a character was more of the focus anyway.

I really liked wreck-it-ralph and big hero 6, not sure why people are shitting on them.

A bit of an off topic question, but what constitutes a positive, negative, or neutral review on rotten tomato? I tried to look for that on their website and didn't find it.

Not a high bar.

I know, I put in my impressions on an earlier page that this movie is pretty good, but it's not going to be remembered as a classic or anything either. I'd say it's this studio's best after Tangled, but it still doesn't come close to Pixar's good stuff. It instantly became my niece's favourite movie ever though, so that's good enough for me :)
She's also completely in love with Nick lol

I didn't expect a
weasel(?) selling bootleg disney movies

Edit (regarding the spoiler below): Wait what, really? I didn't catch that.

On the other hand
what was the police department's website? zpd.gov ? I'm talking the one that's on the poster Judy Hopps refused to be in.

I really love this movie good thing I only saw a few gif of the sloth and not the trailer or else that would have ruined that scene in the movie for me and the homage to Godfather was really awesome.lol Anyway I think Judy and Nick are really great together and in the scene
where Judy was crying while apologizing to Nick under the bridge
, that one really got to me.

Saw it yesterday with my little daughter, walked away pleasantly surprised.
The voice acting was good(saw it in Dutch, normally they hire some big names, this time they hired professional voice actors, it made all the difference).
The animation was phenomenal, as expected by Disney.
The movie itself is well done, enjoyable for both kids and adults, for entirely different reasons, something Frozen, Wreck It Ralph and Tangled were lacking.

Looking forward to seeing this again in the original dub.

Awesome ow man you missed out on the OG version is so good hopefully you can catch it again the jokes are always way better the English :D.

Just learning this doesn't open in the US until March when in Latin America it opened this weekend. This is so weird but it happens more and more especially with Disney. For example we got The Avengers one full week before the US and even Star Wars TFA a day earlier. I'm not complaining but I wonder what gives?
