I liked this a lot better than I thought I would. They put a lot of effort into thinking how the animal society would work, the different biome-neighborhoods of the city, how the different species would get along or not, the language, the way they move, the way they interact. I was really surprised at how much those details elevated what could have otherwise been a very boring, dreamworks-tier premise. I also feel that the plot of the movie -- it's basically a buddy cop film -- worked quite well. Much of the city looked great.
Pretty good content for adults in the audience too, including lengthy homages to Breaking Bad and the Godfather, but also a guy selling bootlegged DVDs.
Drawbacks: 3D doesn't do anything for this film; runs out of steam a bit in the last 20 minutes or so; totally superfluous shoehorning of Shakira (the singer) into the film. Judging from the fact that the film had 7 writers, I suspect rewrites added Shakira so they'd have an end credits song to make it feel a little more Disney.
Of the recent Disney/Pixar films, I'd say above Frozen and certainly above misfires like Wreck-it Ralph or The Good Dinosaur. I'd say I liked it more than Inside Out and my wife liked it less.

Please tell me this is a typo. Like... What in the hell, WiR a misfire? It's one of the most tightly-crafted, original films to come out of the WDAS in the last decade. Which was also directed by Zootopia's co-director Rich Moore. How exactly is it a "misfire"?
This sounds good to me because I hated the dmv sloths joke in the trailers. I mean, it was funny, but surely in a real zootopia the dmv would be full of cheetahs or something similar running around and you would get your license in no time.
I know it sounds daft but that's the kind of thing that really bothers me in a movie, even in a cartoon with talking animals.

It's the exact opposite of tightly crafted; here's what I thought when I saw it in 2012. My feelings have soured a bit since then. But this isn't a thread about Wreck-it Ralph... I just offered my relative rankings as a way for people to contextualize what I thought.
I saw this last thursday, in one of the few places where they had it in english. The last session of the day was a 20:00, but funnily enough there was only one child in the room. Anyway, I thought the movie was among the best the studio has done. Not sure what the complain about a shoehorned (casting/character spoiler, nothing serious)
Shakira is about, she plays a celebrity that simply exists in the world but has little to do with the plot and has literally one or two lines.
The sloth trailer is what made me really wanna see the movie, and it turned out that was the best part of the whole movie. If only everything else was as funny/good as that bit. It looks like The Emperor's New Groove remains to be the funniest Disney movie for me!
I loved the overall message - it's extremely relevant, and I liked
the Bellwether twist (even though I saw it coming a mile away once Judy handed in her police badge).
The story was still surprisingly engaging.
But yeah, overall I was just expecting something better. Something more funny and a little more fun. I was expecting amazing and got something that was just pretty good instead. Ultimately though, it's pretty forgettable. I'd put it alongside Wreck-It-Ralph and Big Hero 6. It's certainly not at the level of Tangled or Frozen.

aaah thanks for your update Tricky.
To bad that you did not enjoy it as much as I did.
Sorry about my hype then
I really enjoyed it so much more then BH6 and RR so maybe that played a part.
I thought it was super funny overall.
No Tangled or Frozen like I already said but still for me very very good movie.
Btw the sloth payoff at the end was the best though right
Saw it yesterday and absolutely loved it. The best part is that they managed to make the anthropomorphic animals not just a gimmick. It's an integral part of the story the fact that they're animals and not just any generic story that happens to be told with talking animals like so many lesser animation studios love to do. Also I loved the main duo, they have so much chemistry.
My biggest gripe probably is that JK Simmons was underutilized

I think this looks awesome and can't wait to bring my daughter to it.
I always questions such anthropomorphised settings though. Like how does this world function? Only rabbits breed with other rabbits? Isn't that kind of segregated? I wonder what dating and relationships are like in such a world.

They don't show any interspecies couples in the movie, but they are all living around in peace. The city is separated in jungle, desert, snowy and city districts to accommodate all kind of animals, there is even a rodent block, where everything is small. The city felt very well thought out.

Finally watched it, its a good movie
I loved the protagonists and most of the characters, better than Frozen, BIG Hero 6 (unfortunately) and i liked it a bit more than Inside Out and The last Dinosaur.
Zootopia is a really fun and well realized city, the Bunny parents and the fat cat were funny, the message of the movie was well presented, both protagonists were cute, with the bunny being surprisingly the main one, there were some cheap jokes and lame characters, or too long gag, like the Godfather but overall the characters were presented living in a big city as animals,Bellwether being the villain was a bit of a lame twist, more in the way it was shown with her being all evil stuff and sent to jail shortly after. the two backstories of Nick and Judy contrast each other but i think they could have done them more distinctive, especially with Nick. the Gazelle is still lame, but not for the song.:S

I know, I put in my impressions on an earlier page that this movie is pretty good, but it's not going to be remembered as a classic or anything either. I'd say it's this studio's best after Tangled, but it still doesn't come close to Pixar's good stuff. It instantly became my niece's favourite movie ever though, so that's good enough for me
Just came out of the movie, loved it. Speaking of the "DMV commentary", I also couldn't help but feel this movie is also a commentary on US race relations (it's not exactly subtle).

Because of its crazy release time frame that this movie is being released in sadly.
See my post about it here
Next week we should get more folks into the thread US and lots of more market open up March 3rd & 4th 2016.

Woah, I was so used to Taiwan getting Disney and Pixar releases weeks or even months after the US, I thought Zootopia was already in American theaters.

Saw it today, really cool! Not as funny as I thought it would be though but I laughed here and there, the universe created is fabulous, characters are cool and cute, the story is predictable (well, it's a Disney movie) but nice to follow...
I really liked it. Funny and clever and very relevant. It doesn't reach Frozen in terms of pure feels (mostly because of no songs - there is even a very funny reference to that fact), but I think I would put it in the higher classes of Disney/Pixar movies.
So is it true that they had different male reporters in different versions of the movie? Apparently the female leopard is consistent but the male reporter with her is different per region.
The one I got (Philippines) was the moose which was also in the American release.

I think the movie will at least do better than Wreck-It Ralph. A sequel or TV series would have a ton of potential, like Doggie said.
One thing though: they never really tackled what the predators actually eat. Canines at least can thrive on fruit, veggies and grain but what about the cats?

I saw it with a four year old. He watched the whole thing without saying a word, unlike The Good Dinosaur, where he needed mama's lap a couple of times (and he covered his eyes during that super scary short movie at the start. What where Pixar thinking by including that?).
Visually, I was far more impressed by Zootopia, which surprised me. The Good Dinosaur has some amazing visuals, but after a while I just stopped noticing. Zootopia has a trip segment that's just one visual splendor after another. It's a beautiful movie.
Plot, characters and humor was okay. I think I enjoyed it more that Ralf and Frozen, but then, I've seen the latter two, ugh, many times.
I agree that Shakira was kinda stuck in there/didn't quite fit, but I suspect that her contribution, the end credits, was the good stuff. I didn't get to see it myself, but judging by how many stayed behind, it must have been worth watching. That's unusual. Typically there's a rush to get out the moment the credits roll.
My ranking of the last three animated movies I've seen:
1. Inside Out
2. Zootopia
3. The Good Dinosaur
