Dissidia Final Fantasy ARCADE ANNOUNCED! [Update: Trailer + Info]

army of one?

yeah.

Awesome :D

Looks pretty good. They're smart to make it 3v3 this time, since it makes much more sense to allow for more players in an arcade title especially if they want to sell more machines in a linked system. Interesting that they only showed heroes in the trailer though. Maybe it's still early in development and they haven't adapted the villains into the new full HD models yet?

They'll be holding a press conference for the game on April 10 to provide many more details, so if there's a console version too, that's where they would likely announce it.

Well usually I'd say (Another potential vita game lost), but in this case pretty happy with the boost in visuals!
Just have to hOpe it moves to consoles...

If there isn't a console version, would it make its money back?
Serious question.

Of course it would. It's Final Fantasy, it's Dissidia, it looks good. It'll make its money back before it is even released because every arcade in Japan will want to have it. Popular arcade games get home ports because it allows them to make even more money, not because they don't make money by being in arcades.

How big is the damn arcade scene in Japan? I guess I underestimated the overall gaming culture of the Japanese populace.

Not as big as it used to be and lots of places have / are shutting down due to low revenue / costs.

Since folks can game on the go using smartphones it really has killed the general casual crowds that stepped into game centers. So its more having to try to live off the hardcore that get addicted to a particular title.

Space is also an issue as the more popular titles are usually the massive machines outside of things like gundam vs and a few other fighting games. Machines are not getting any cheaper either which is another problem when companies keep trying to push out new stuff and if a game center does not keep up with that they have the potential chance to lose their crowd.

It doesn't matter that much when we're talking about huge brand titles. When they sell multiplayer machines in sets of 2, or 4, or 6, it means every arcade which wants it is paying 10-30k or more for the set. A popular big new game will still be able to penetrate in a couple of hundred locations nationwide, so that's a sell-in of several million dollars before they even start taking a cut every time someone actually pays to play a game in each arcade.

It's just too bad that we're likely getting only three characters per game, and that will certainly be the MAIN HERO + LOVE INTEREST + VILLAIN choices.

Too jaded to get excited until some actual gameplay shows up. Square games don't exactly have a sterling record of late. It does look pretty though.

Being an arcade game first actually opens up far more possibilities. They can continue to update more characters along the way. With 15 FF games, 3 characters each would still be 45 characters, which is a lot. Not every FF would really need 3 character anyway, so I'm hoping they'll have more offbeat choices like playable monsters and non-character bosses, etc.

I dunno... Isn't anyone else feeling the uncanny valley from those character models? Something is really weird about the eyes...

But yeah, hopefully this goes the Street Fighter route and hits consoles eventually. It looks feasible for the PS4 to run, I think.

With this and the Pokemon arcade fighter one... why do they release now more games in japan on arcades than consoles?

It looks so awesome! Do you think this will come to consoles?

I want to play as Y'shtola so much! Also loved the previous Dissidia games on PSP so it would be awesome if this came to Vita/PS3/PS4.

I need more Squall. Why did they put Lightning and not him in the trailer? I thought he was more popular.

Squall is from a game that's over a decade old. Lightning is from the latest FF released. It's not hard to see which one is more popular/relevance.

Y'shtola over Minfilia and/or Yda?

I think Minfilia's battle style would be getting kidnapped by everything around..

And it's Ex Burst would be spamming player's Linkpearl.

:$

Probably the reason Y'shtola is in other than having already been picked as FFXIV rep before is that she's actually quite unique for the roster - she's the white mage archetype and nobody else in Dissidia previously was one really.
She's got Blizzard though, that's bullshit. You can't crossclass that!
But also Holy so we're cool.

If I remeber well, Y'shtola has been a fan favourite since 2010, mainly because she was the main NPC in the 1.0 alpha & beta, so players have known her for the longest time. I believe she would have been in even if her class was Leatherworker.
