Divinity: Original Sin II -- Announcement, Upcoming Kickstarter

Oh man, too many cRPG's coming out, never thought I would see the day again after so many years. Hope they stick with PC having a separate UI and so on.

Some disjointed thoughts:

- RIP Kirill :(. I wonder if they're going to use some of his music posthumously.

- Hoping for NPC schedules and a day/night cycle a-la Elder Scrolls. Even if it's janky, it goes a long way in making the game enjoyable.

- I hope it stays a bit more grounded. The first game was at its best in the less supernatural parts.

- They need to show a bit more restraint with the element system, which was cool but wayyyy overused.

I visited the studios in Ghent this summer to test the PS4 edition of Original Sin and I saw a lot of artwork on the walls, and next the Divinity: Orginal Sin and Dragon Commander sections of the wall there was an concept art board for "The lady, the mage and the knight".

For anyone not familiar with Larian, this was to be their first game project around mid 90's. They could not make this then, but to me it looked like that was gonna be their next project. I recall Sven talking about their dream RPG project being next, so when I put those two together...
Hype!

Kickstarter uh.
Sven didn't want to do another kickstarter at first, but recently it seems like he was convinced to do it for the overall health of the platform.

maybe this time they wont have such shitty women armor tho

If this is true, I'm going to drop mad money on the KS. I got D:OS for super cheap and it ended up being my favorite game last year and is one of my favorite games of all time.

I felt bad having paid so little for it

I'm extremely wary of another Larian kickstarter. They haven't even delivered on what they promised for D:OS yet. They promised a Linux version in that kickstarter, people gave them money based on that promise. They happily took the money, and then turned around and worked on the console version. They claim the Enhanced Edition will come to Linux with a same-day release, but it's still shady to take the money and then not deliver the promised game.

Zero problem with them using KS for this.

It's a bit of a niche genre at this point, and to make the game they want, it's not like they have Activision's cash at their disposal. That may be the only way these games get made in the future.

That said, I'm a terrible person for never playing the first game. Genre is right up my alley, but my gaming PC is a trainwreck. Now that Win 10 is out, may be time to finally do something about that.

I hope they'll tell a more interesting story this time, the first one was awful in that regard. The Gameplay was fantastic tho.

This. I felt the story in OS was embarrassingly bad, and it really made the game a slog for me, even if the mechanics and gameplay were top notch.

I hope they take pointers from harebrained schemes for their 2nd one

Oh damn, that must have been one of their secret projects. I think they still have something else they're working on too.

I strongly disagree with them using KS for this. Public funding was needed for the first one as they had no previous projects to use profits from to make their game. Now? They had a successful project. The KS worked. They got public funds, made a game, made money from that game.

Instead of using their profits from the first project to fund their 2nd, like a normal company, they are looking for handouts again. So yeah, don't agree with the KS whatsoever.

Will still buy the game in the end, but don't like using KS for a sequel of a successful game.

"While not all of the money is for us as we had private investors on board, the game did sufficiently well for us to envision funding our next endeavors with it, meaning we’re pretty happy about its performance."

Woah already!?

Man I'm just waiting for my PS4 copy to come out. I hope the developers are considering putting the 2nd game on there as well at release this time.

A man can dream right?

Great game, should be a good sequel.

And maybe I'm a Kickstarter cynic at this point, but getting a little tired of successful developers returning to the well and shifting the cost and risk of development to their fan base just because they can, not necessarily because they need to. Interested to hear their reasoning why KS is appropriate again (aside from the obvious "it worked out for us last time").

Backed the first one and will back this one.

Larian is one of the most likeable developers out there and Original Sin was a really great game which I wholly enjoyed.

But I will miss Kirill's music dearly. ;-;

Shenmu 3 already recieved funding from sony, and they still opened a KS campaign. More money for covering development costs never hurts.

I had a presentation for their game(the first one)at gamescom this year and seeing it for the first time I must say HOLY CRAP. Why aren't more people talking about this game, it looks nuts.

When is the PS4 version of Origin Sin due? Really hope whatever they make from PS4 sales they can put towards II.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 builds further on the foundations we’ve been laying with Divinity: Original Sin (D: OS), and Divinity: Original Sin – Enhanced Edition (D: OS EE). For us, this allows for an unprecedented focus on the gameplay. We won’t be “losing time” building the elementary systems that typically take up more than 60% of our development time. Instead, we can start building the world immediately and try out all kinds of things.
I’m hopeful though — there’s a small scene in D:OS 2, right at the beginning of the demo that we’ll be showing to press and players at Pax Prime. It’s a small detail, but every time I see it, my heart starts beating faster because of the enormous implications it has for the entire game. It was when I saw this that I felt sure about taking it to Kickstarter. I think other RPG players will recognize what it means for the game and their hearts will start beating faster also.
My heart is already beating faster.

Nice. I really liked the first one (never finished it though, but waiting for the enhanced edition). Their engine and combat has plenty of potential. That said, I'm kind of hoping they will drop the standard high fantasy world/lore/setting from the first one for something a little more unique. Though I doubt they will.

I don't totally follow the frustration with Larian going back to Kickstarter. I mean, I'm sure the people who donated substantial sums to the previous game had some dreams that their money would kickstart not just the one game but an entire series, but that was never a specific, promised goal (whatever Sven has said subsequently about D:OS funding new projects), was it? If you're interested in the game but don't feel like going big on a kickstarter again, you have at least two pretty good options available to you: (1) pledge the minimum amount to receive a copy of the game, which is usually a significant discount compared to the retail price; (2) don't fund the game, wait to buy it on release. At lower pledge-tiers, kickstarting a project from proven developer is (at least in my experience) a good deal -- in some ways even better for me than the traditional publishing route because I get backer updates. This seems like an especially safe bet because it's using an engine and ruleset we already know can make a good game.

Not quite sure the opposition against studios revisiting Kickstarter, especially if said studios have made good on their promises previously.

Given that Kickstarter is essentially a preordering platform for these types of endeavours, I don't see the problem.

Larian, Harebrained, inXile etc. have shown to me that they want and can make games that appeal to me. And their level of engagement throughout the development process is amazing.

Well, I'll get the game due to my backing of D:OS, but I'll probably pitch in to the new one regardless. I can forgive them for going back to KS despite the success of the original considering they dumped a lot into the remaster. That's far more effort than I ever expected them to invest into the game.

I wonder how much of the funds are coming from Kickstarter? The original game sold 850,000 on steam with the lowest price ever being $23.

I liked the first one but I could absolutely give two shits about the story, it was so bad.

Yet, I'm extremely excited for a sequel. It's a testament to how they knocked down the gameplay part so well.

Larian didn't make good on their promises though, see my previous post about the promised and still-missing Linux version.
I backed Shadowrun: Hong Kong, because Harebrained always delivered. Larian, not so much. I'll likely buy the game if and when it releases, but I'll not give them money until they actually have a game I can play.

Oh man. I'm not going to have any cash for the kickstarter, argh! D:OS was my GOTY last year, above everything else.

I've loved everything I've played from Larian, can't wait for more from them.

Fantastic---if it works for Shadowrun and a constantly growing number of others, it should work for Divinity.

I hope this KS is wildly successful for whatever scope they've planned for it this time around.

I wasn't aware that Larian dropped the ball with the Linux version. Do you know if they're still working on it?
