I love Lightning so i don't mind her being in future games. I just hope they're not shitty games cause that's when it hurts to see her there.

No. If they want to put her in games like dissidia or theatrhythm then fine but everything else keep her the fuck out.

Could this be some LGBT lobby bullshit? Like SquareEnix is forced to have a strong female character. That might explains all these androgynous characters too lol

They have Aqua. She's actually good, even with a sometimes "eh" English VA.

I voted No. I wouldn't care if she wasn't in KHIII. Though if she were, I wouldn't mind as long as she is a minor character compared to say, Squall. She was in KH3D as a little charm thing. That's all she deserves...

All in all, I've had enough of Toriyama projecting his infatuation of this dead character onto everyone else.

I'm not really a FF fan any more, but based on what I know I don't want any more of this character. One of the most interesting things about the older FF games was its clean slate with every new episode, including a completely different feeling 'world' and often a new art style too.

Dear Toriyama and Square Enix:

Let me write and direct the next RPG with Lightning!

I never made a game before but I sure as hell know I can fart out a better story and develop her character more strongly than what you guys did in Lightning Returns!

Sincerely,

A JRPG fan who actually likes Lightning!

I'm in the same camp, the wonder and magic of FF when I first started to really get into them is all but gone. The style has changed and I don't even know what FF is about anymore besides the j-pop look-a-likes and convoluted storylines (from what I played of FF13). I really liked FF12 but the idea of shoehorning Lightning into everything FF-related makes me just wanna take a pass. The upcoming FF15 game looks interesting so I'll give it a chance, but again I really haven't kept up with it hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Her body is not even that hot to me. I'll take Fang naked though.
Actually, that's one of the qualities I love about Lightning. She's not oversexualized.

She's sexy with clothes on.

Same with the new Lara Croft or Nilin from Remember Me. And who can forget Cate Archer from NOLF! They're beautiful but done modestly without going all Team Ninja!

These are the character designs I really admire.

No.

She's a bland, one note character, just like every other XIII character.
Why SE is pushing her so much I have no idea, other than to appease the "waifu" crowd, fans I could do with out.

Stop tarnishing the FF name by putting the protagonist of what is widely agreed as the most shitest entry in future FFs. You'll do nothing but piss off the fans who justly hate her, being the face of the downfall off FF after all, and possibly lose sales due to it.

Dissidia is fine. I expect most FF characters in Dissidia. Kingdom Hearts I couldn't give less of a shit about. Any mainline title though? Nooooooope.

How many of those people are actual Final Fantasy fans?

I don't share the same taste with the people that liked Final Fantasy X or XIII, but I don't consider them lesser fans than me, of the Final Fantasy series just because they were exposed to, and enjoy, different titles than I.

Hated FF13 and 13-2, loved lightning returns.
They did the right thing with this one:
fuck story and characters. Concentrate on gameplay.
That was the only reasonable thing you could have done within this universe.

But please, no more. Let's just move on and don't look back at the 13 saga.

I don't mind Lightning as a character (though she is nowhere near the FF character top 10), but FFXIII and anything related is done. Overdone in fact. Drop it completely and make new shit. The only way I want to see Lightning return (if at all) is in spin-off games like Theatrhythm.

Her body is not even that hot to me.

She is borderline anorexic, her legs are like twigs and the gap between her legs? Jesus, is that supposed to be attractive?

I just want to know where Toriyama is getting the idea that enough Final Fantasy fans love and want more Lightning to warrant her being in more games. She's a Final Fantasy character, and there's a new Kingdom Hearts coming out, so she's bound to be in that. Beyond that, she might be in any number of spin-offs, and hey, maybe they could give her a personality while they're at it!

Nope, not attractive to me. Her head is too big for her body and she has no expression. A mannequin is hotter.

Toriyama undisputable reason engine: "I like Lightning, so everyone else must like her as well. At least every single person who bought XIII and XIII-2, I mean come on."

I can't say I do.

She could have been a great character, but they tried so much to turn her into a badass that she just looks empty and lame now. Not to mention that SE has no idea of what character development is. Fang is a much better Lightning than Lightning herself. It is not like I hate her or anything, it is just that she is overused. And has been overused in all the wrong ways.

The amount of salt in this thread is hilarious, I would love if they made Lightning the main character of every mainline FF game from now on, just to see the reactions on gaf.

Excellent way to kill the FF brand. FF13 already did a number on it.

Do we have anything that supports this? Sure sequel to 13 sold less, but all the sequels to 7 sold worse, as did all the sequels to 10. We can't really know for sure how much 13 "killed" the brand until 15 comes out. Hell, 14 is doing pretty well, better than 11 ever did.

I'd love to know as well.

FFXIII-2 is among the worst selling in the series' history and Lightning Returns is on pace to take that crown.

Serah was a better protagonist and character than lightning, infact much better. She was my least liked character in FFXIII. My favourite in XIII was Fang, in XIII-2 it was Noel, Serah and Hope all three of them.

Take a look at FF13 sales then picture all future games being lead by Lightning. FF would definitely decline. A lot of FF fans are sick of FF13 and the cast of it. Hell that move would make me trash the Franchise.

Oh I know that it would take a hit if Lightning was the protagonist from now on, I was more talking about this:

It already did? People seem as hyped about 15 as ever in my eyes, I know a lot of casual gamers who are stoked for it. Anecdotal, sure, but I don't think Lightning and her games have done much to FF as a whole.

I can still enjoy the games, despite Lightning being in them. Lightning Returns is really fun, and a refreshing entry into the series if you ask me. Seeing the salt on gaf would more than make up for Lightning being in them.

I was thinking more along the lines of that would never happen, they've given Lightning 3 games, that seems like enough. If they did a poor job of making her a likable protagonist, then they've made their bed and they should lie in it. If Lightning does show up in another mainline game as a goddess or main character, I wouldn't be so quick to hate, I think everyone is just tired of her and Toriyama isn't helping.

It sold close to X-2 numbers, didn't it? I'm pretty sure it beat out DoC and Crisis Core too. FF sequels never seem to perform anywhere near as well as their original game, I don't believe that can be taken as proof everyone hated the original.

I don't really care for Lightning either way, don't think she deserved her own game however I wouldn't mind seeing her again in a cameo fashion (and I've found myself enjoying her game more than I thought I would). But the hyperbole and general hate directed at her/XIII seems crazier to me then the supposed madness of Toriyama. Or the idea that no one could possibly like her/the XIII series and it's all a manufactured/lalala I can't hear you stance from SE. I realize some people are joking but the poor horse is so dead by now.

I don't understand why someone would want a franchise as loved as FF to fall into irrelevance only for the pleasure of reading 20 pages of salty comments in a forum.

It's beyond me.

I think in general JRPG franchises with a FF / DQ (completely different game) scheme sell worse with sequels. The same happened with Tales of Xillia to Tales of Xillia 2, with X to X-2, with Symphonia to Dawn of the New World and with the XIII franchise. The last has the biggest drop iirc, but it was the sequel a game a lot of FF fans didn't liked.

Quite a number of poster here is giving FF15 a chance, a last chance for the FF brand. A lot of us waited for over 6 years for the game. I can only speak for myself, but I use to look at FF in high regard. FF13 and all the sequels killed my enthusiasm for the brand. For FF11 and 14 that's a different demographic to me. There are fans that doesn't play the mmo.

the thing is, Lightning has great character design. she just needs to be more upbeat and not be cloud 2.0, if there's any FF protagonist you need to copy for a new Final Fantasy, it's Zidane.

Many of us were final fantasy fans into and perhaps even through the PS2 era. Ever since we've just been watching it burn like a dumpster fire. Occasionally threads like this come up and we come out of the woodwork to protest, "Please, someone do something! No Toriyama, don't throw gasoline on the fire! That won't help put it out..." And then we turn away again, unable to bare the sight.

It's no secret that we have been in the worst possible period of FF. FFXIII was a disappointment to many, FFXIV early version was terrible, FFXV was delayed (still is) and we still don't have FF Type 0. The only FF games we were given are the XIII games. There has been so much conflict between what the fans wanted and what SE was giving. Especially their replies that basically implied that everyone wants and likes Lightning were disgusting.

I feel you and those type of fans, I really do. FF fans really had it rough for the past 7 years (first world problem lol). But, you guys have been letting your anger out on FFXIII fans or ones who enjoyed the games good enough. The FFXIII fans have been trashed and ridiculed, they weren't given the room to discuss about the games in a non-aggressive way.

And you know what that means? I feel like those hurt fans are trying their best to prove SE wrong. That no one wants XIII games and that Lightning is not welcome. This is going too far, as there are fans who enjoy the games. It's too late though, the negative stigma has been created.

Don't you think it's about time to let go? Let the fans at least enjoy their send-off in peace. FFXV might be a turd or one that doesn't live up to expectations. It might be another repeat cycle of having 3 FFXV games and fans not wanting them. Then what? Now I know the stakes are high with this one, and the teams that are working on it are more talented. Let's hope for the best. I hope you guys get the FF that will live up to your expectations and that we all can be content.

IIRC, XIII-2 sold close to half of what X-2 sold.
The other two you mentioned are PSP games.

The starting point for Lightning seemed to stem from "Hey, people like Cloud. Let's make a female version of Cloud." Which is fine, but Cloud, at least, had an interesting back story and interesting arc. Lightning has none of these and her voice is so dry and monotone. She sounds like a jaded 40 year old than a 17 year old girl, or however old she is. I don't think there's anything organic or sincere about her design. She wasn't be that much of an issue, but the whole XIII mythology is all over the place, unfocused and scatter shot. XIII was a disjointed, disconnected experience that I got very little out of. I never bothered with XIII-2 and have no interest in Lightning Returns. My interest with the series is at an all time low, which is a shame, considering that the PS1 era games are some of the best games I've ever played. Square seemed so much more at ease when they were limited by technology.

The Japanese crowd had a kind of 80s standard of attractiveness, thin legs and top heavy. That's why Tifa and Lulu existed. For some reason Tifa's boobs shrunk in Advent Children though.

Lightning has the figure of a 12 year old boy.

Quick google has X-2 at around 3mil and XIII-2 2.8mil. Is that not accurate?

And CC was PSP, DoC was PS2. I could maybe see PSP argument but I doubt many FFVII/PS1 fans didn't have a PS2. Everyone had a PS2.

Let's not act like the "defenders" aren't as just as hyperbolic as the haters. We call out the game on it's actual problems and criticisms, and they come to defend it which includes a hell of a lot of spinning, which in turn causes arguments.
If they didn't constantly come to defend the game, trying to put a positive spin on obvious flaws, there wouldn't be as much annoyance in the air, thus not as many arguments.

They like to play the victim, but they bring it on themselves.
They're allowed to love the game all they want, power to them, but we're also allowed to hate it.

And, they've had FF their way for 4 years now, while the rest of us have watched something we like go slowly downhill and even quit the series. Of course we're going to be a bit edgy.

Advent Children?

Non-"generic kinda racist racist" barret redesign.

Whole film redeemed.

Also I liked all the out fits in general and the fights were cool

No, I do get behind a character having to be upbeat, some characters are more quiet sad people. Thats just life, however does the entirety of the characters dialouge and voice direction need to be improved, yes.

I voted no.

I really liked FFXIII, FFXIII-2 and started LR:FFXIII yesterday and enjoyed it so far (even though I hate time restrictments in RPGs... :/ ) but the Lightning Triology ends and so should the appearance of Lightning.

btw. same goes for Cloud, I hope the LR:FFXIII costume was the last thing seen of him

I've mentioned this briefly in my initial reply for this thread. Yes, it is true that those fans can be just as hyperbolic with their defence. I remember calling out on some of them in the past (no disrespect Perfo).

But, I don't think it's a fair representation to say they're just as bad. That side is not half as strong as the other side. Their replies are easy to pick and attack because they're one of the few with a positive reply.

There's nothing wrong with disagreeing or even having negative replies. Nor am I for the hyperbolic replies that dismiss the negative opinions outright. Both sides have some crazy examples, but I feel the negative side is more dismissive and aggressive just by the sheer of size alone besides being a bit edgy.

Anyways, it was not my intention to turn this discussion into blaming and who is worse. I was just sick of how the threads end up, always so negative and one sided. It doesn't matter where this problem started. It is what it is right now. Is it possible to start a new page? Not just the 'haters' but also the 'defenders' need to relax a bit.

the only fan that matters to me... is me. and i got my lightning saga, so i couldnt care less. im ready to move on, but i wouldn't be upset if she was in future crossover games.
