Do women prefer buff guys?

For both genders, what happens with unusual body types is generally this: they are not preferred by most (Be they extremely tall women, or very hairy men, or very obese women, or extremely muscular men, or heavily tattooed partners of either sex, etc.) but those that prefer these unusual body types often strongly prefer them, perhaps even to the exclusion of anything else.

There are men out there, for example, who strongly prefer very obese women such that they would not date a woman who wasn't. By contrast, most people who have average or typical tastes do have preferences, but those preferences are not paramount. A typical guy is willing to date a woman who is very tall, they just likely wouldn't prefer it, ceteris paribus, for instance.

That's been my observation and what the (admittedly scant) science has suggested to me. Average build and average features are preferred by the most number of people, but unusual body types or facial features can be attractive, and those that find them attractive often find them strongly or even exclusively attractive.

My girlfriend, who I consider to be completely out of my league, found me incredibly attractive when I was super skinny. She has stated multiple times that huge muscles creep her out, and she was hesitant when I started building mine. She always said "not too big" and would tell me when she thought I was going too far. Right now, she thinks I found an awesome middle ground, and I'm pretty formitable looking, but not grotesque. I'm pretty fit and my weight/muscle is distributed pretty well (I'm 6'4 and about 190-200lbs.)

It really is different for everyone, but I've noticed that quite a few women don't prefer that jacked up look. It's best to just be "fit."

This is a crazy thought, but maybe different women have different preferences about who they are attracted to.

You know, being individuals and all.

Yes. Thank god we women don't all have the same preferences. As for my own preferences...I find very buff guys not attractive at all. Someone like Jason Statham is about as buff as I enjoy, and I would consider him "ripped" or "cut".

Jason Statham is so sexy.

I've lost weight in my goal of being fit but only men have complimented me.

Damn it, women, I do this for you.

I also lost weight went from 117kg -> 100kg before male friends started complimenting.
Once i passed 95kg females started to notice i lost weight. Just stick to it and bath in the compliments shit feels good when you achieve goals and people notice it.

Don't watch The One with Jet Li. He looks horrid there.

I have a friend, he is the same height as me, about 6'2 and our body type are about as diffrent as they could be, he's skinny as hell, he plays fotball(soccer) so he's still kinda athletic. I'm more muscular as I've been lifting for about six years. And he gets more attention from girls, and I get more attention from guys, comments about my muscles and such when we are out at the pubs.

The girls I've dated have been into the whole muscle thing, not specifically the muscles but that I'm big.

But there are types, there is so much going on with attraction, but one thing is kinda certain, everybody likes people that take care of themselves in every aspect.

I find this odd.

Any time a guy with a toned body is on the TV or something my girlfriend swoons, and yet when I'm doing weights she says she doesn't want me to be buff?

Security? Sometimes down to the simple thing of not wanting the standards to raise. An ex of mine for example didnt like the added "pressure" of feeling the need to be fit or eating healthy.

No, but I do think there are trends that can be observed. Most women prefer taller men; most women prefer non-balding men; a disproportionate amount of women prefer white men to men of other races.

I can do the same for men's preferences, by the way, in case you think I'm singling women out. General societal trends exist and can be described.

I'm not sure why we need a chorus of "but the individual has their own opinion" every time there's a thread about general trends. I'm sure there are, for example, 1000s of people who've made it from a drug-addled, crime-ridden, hellhole of a neighbourhood, with a single parent who took little interest in them, into successful adults with stable, well-paying jobs. But no (reasonable) person would dare use their existence to argue that it represents anything other than odds-defying brilliance on their behalf, and would certainly never argue that the circumstances in which a child grows up don't have a huge bearing on their life chances.

So it's a reasonable request to wonder if there are general characteristics one sex prefers in the other, and if they change by race/country/age etc, while understanding that there will naturally be many individuals who buck the trend.

I don't know, but when my friend slowed down to look at my ass and said, "I expected better"

I was wrecked.... ;_;

Because then the narrative shifts to "I got in shape, why doesn't she like me? I thought women liked muscular men!"

Play to your strengths... I'm not buff in the least and I've always done pretty well if I do say so myself. I think if you dress well, you can appeal with most body shapes. A buff dude with his polo tucked into his jeans which are hoisted round his armpits is still going to look unattractive imo.
I wouldn't tell him that to his face though.

One of the reasons I like gaf is that these kinds of posts from the more informed side of the community do in fact tend to slip through all the filler. Both Mumei (probably butchered that) and Opiate are two that come off the top of my head who I usually see in these types of threads posting truly fascinating stuff on subjects like this. I don't know, it may be that I'm just on gaf more often now, but it seems like the informative posts are becoming less and less common here vs the dismissive and degrading ones. Especially in threads about social issues, where arguably the more informative posts are the most important, because otherwise you just end up with both sides spitting venom at each other over perceived slights for 1000 posts.

Girls, stop shitposting this thread with those horrible off-topic pictures of sexy men! The Internet is serious business! We need more men to abstractly discuss what women actually want! Keep out, feminine snowflakes, and stop skewing our research with your 1% anecdotal statistical noise!

But srs, not a girl, but I think actors are getting way too huge these days, especially due to the arms race (biceps race?) in all those comic book movies. IMO, Fight Club Brad Pitt is the way to go.

Yeah, film beefcakes are getting out of control. While I would switch bodies with Chris Hemsworth any day of the week (and I wouldn't mind his wife...), we are talking about a new generation of actors that are actually BIGGER than the already drug enhaced 80's hunks.

I can see a young generation of boys growing as frustrated with their bodies as girls have been doing during the past few decades. Personal trainers and PEDs are already creating some impossible expectations.

I mean, even Chris Evans went on the record and said that he couldn't keep his Captain America body in prime shape for the whole production because the dieting and training schedule was so taxing it was making him sick. And there's no way in hell Thor is natty.

On topic: This is completely cultural. I've noticed that Eastern European girls are more inclined towards the SWOLE BROS in my neck of the woods, but the autoctonous species prefer soccer player-like bodies. Fit and somewhat muscular, but still slim.

My current girl has complimented on my body (5.7/170 cm and 160lb/72 kg; hardly huge), but she also said that under no circumstances I should try to embiggen my arms or go for the fully buff look. I still want to get some actual shoulders, though...

I was told being tall helps. But I'm 6'6" and I don't have women beating down my door like my mom told me they would.

What up with that?

Or is that just a popular misconception?

I was reading that Justin Bieber thread and there appear to be a lot of conflicting opinions on whether he looks good in his new form or not.

I always thought that women did prefer muscular men, though the guy who plays Sherlock (the superior British one) and the dude who plays Loki are very popular with women, yet they hardly have any muscle whatsoever.

Dear lord if thats the barometer of buff, I never need to pick up another weight again in my life.

Dude is scrawny as fuck.

OT, it really depends on the woman, but you have to remember that there is alot of things that some women find attractive to look at and fondle, but wouldnt necessarily want in their man behind closed doors.

Not to mention alot of women like buff guys until they experience first hand how much work it requires to be significantly buff. Not only that but the drawbacks of increased flatulance, constant admiration from other women, etc factors in.

Put it this way. If a guy likes big tits he likes big tits. Full stop.

Most women who like muscle like muscle, but........

Oh, yeah I'm not overweight. When I say Big I mean I weight train. I used to be super skinny, but now I'm built with muscles and whatnot.
Haha yeah I know that's what you meant. Just didn't want to call anyone viewing this thread "fat".

Because as a thin guy it seems more acceptable to call us "skinny" than it is to call overweight people "fat".

......... i'll just leave my crush here :x (cant believe it takes this long for fassy)

not sure if he belongs in this thread cuz i think his charisma really carries him over. he's just so lovable. not perfect body type, but ugh. my ovaries *_____*

"Tall" to women is in the just above 6' range. Unfortunately you're above 6' 4", which puts you into the "Really Tall" category which is just intimidating and awkward. Go find the 1% of women who are above 6' that you can hug and kiss without having to hunch over like Quasi Moto. Otherwise you'll have to first show them you are not the hypermanly Norse god you appear to be but are actually a gentle giant just looking for affection.

I am going to post more gifs of Tom Hiddleston as Loki. Just because I now actually have a legitimate excuse to do it.
(Uh, just let me know if this is too many gifs for a post!)

(Obviously, not all straight or bisexual women prefer buff men!)

I think not being overweight helps you....but from there, it's a crap shoot. Different tastes for different women. It comes down to your personality.

Haha! :P

I wish I'd actually been able to meet him when he was in Australia last year. Sadly I couldn't make it to Sydney at that point in time! Ah well, perhaps he'll come back for a Comic Con.

Always had a thing for him. I am a straight guy but damn i don't think i could say no to that.

I can see a young generation of boys growing as frustrated with their bodies as girls have been doing during the past few decades. Personal trainers and PEDs are already creating some impossible expectations.

At least in Australia i think this is already becoming a bit of a problem. PED usage is really on the rise especially amongst young men.

Aaaaaaaaaaah, me too. But I think I'll be too shy even if I meet him. Will just sigh from afar :x Im stupid like that ;___;

Chris Hemsworth, though. When I went to see Thor 2, all the women were sighing at his shirtless scene while all the men (me included) were like "Damn".

I really liked the Thor scenes a bit better but Thor 2 shirtless Chris Hemsworth was really nice too

Audible gasps at my theatre. Same with Caps getting out of his Vita-Ray cocoon.

I mean, I could hear actual sighs and gulping. It was that crazy.

But of course, when you are tall and gorgeous like Chris Evans, massive pecs and traps are going to look great on you. I'd probably be some ridiculous creature with that kind of physique.

The nurse thristing in the background still gets me.
