Do you agree with 'Adblock' plugins?

Fuck no. A number of sites I work at have started to entirely block ads through their ISP, and I totally hate it and have had arguments with customers about it. Web sites cost money to run.

No need to block ads in my view if the site is that littered with ads it's usually not worth visiting to begin with.

Why would anyone want to block ads? That's just silly. Ads are great hehehehe. I mean, half the fun of the Super Bowl is the ads, right? Same is true for everything, especially gaming related forums hehehehe.

hehe

heh

I don't use an adblock plugin myself. But I do use a bug blocker because that stuff is annoying. I also use click-to-flash to preserve battery life on my laptop.

(yes, I still see GAF ads)

I mean, for every user that uses Adblock. sites are loosing money from that use not seeing their adverts.

I love GAF, Reddit, and some other sites and don't use Adblock on them since the ads are quite un-intrusive but some ads (YouTube, full page banner ads) are just plain annoying.

So do you guys use them and turn them off for certain sites or not use them at all?

I honestly never mind ads. With all the free content we get on the internet it's kind of silly to complain about some banner at the top of the page that I'm going to ignore anyway or some commercial at the beginning of a youtube video. Trying to get around ads with adblocking and the like is giving companies more incentive to find more intrusive ways to advertise at you. And they will find ways.

Edit: I only block that text-enhance mess. That's just excessive.

I prefer noscript. Allow trusted sites to run all their ads, while not letting myself be caught off guard like, say, when Siliconera has trojans infesting their ads.

Personally I have found that the only anti-malware I need for my windows installs is no-script. It's really disturbing once you start seeing how many other domains are secretly running behind the scenes on a website. It's not uncommon to see a page trying to load 10-20 other domains that you're not aware of. Now they all need my permission to run first. Keeps away the malware writers and the data miners.

Its tempting but I don't use it. Even on youtube, where to see a 2min video there's a 30 second ad, right? But I would feel bad not letting the ad run because the guy making the video deserves money.

I don't have to click on the ad that is running so that the person who made the video still gets paid right?

What youtube are you on? I'm lucky if 1/100 videos I look up are even worth the time of mine they waste let alone going through a 30 second ad.

I used to use them a long time ago, but I find no site I use nowadays has super annoying pop ups and other shit so I guess it's not a thing, however chrome is by default is how I have mine set now and I have no problems with ads I see here or any site I visit.

No, I think it's wrong.

If the ads are problematic or overly intrusive, stop visiting the site. If you are unwilling to put up with their ads, then you don't get their free content. Seems fair to me.

People always say GAF ads are funny and I kind of feel like it's just a meme I'm unaware of. The only ad on GAF I've ever laughed at is the one about the "Hot Arab Girls" or whatever.

I use it but disable it in every site I visit regularly since I want to support them and im aware its an important (if not the only) way to achieve revenue and stay alive.

Only for pop up ads. Ads on most websites don't bother me unless they have audio. I find the ones here pretty amusing since the subject matter is somewhat related to the thread.

I gave up on adblock alltogether years ago when I read that Ars Technica post about how much it can hurt websites, especially tech sites since a much larger portion of their audience uses adblock.

I use adblock (obviously not on GAF) mostly because of those infuriating video ads that play when a page loads. Searching through loads of tabs to find the one playing the video ad about swiffer is painful.

Non intrusive ads are fine by me, I tend to kind of ignore them anyway.

I had Adblock installed a few years ago, but didn't like how it defaulted to blocking pretty much everything and didn't feel like changing it. If you visit a site, they need to pay the costs too, be so nice to support them. If you think the ads are too annoying? Well don't visit the site.

Everything but Neogaf. Your PC is less secure if you browse the general web without it. It should only be disabled on sites you implicitly trust such as Neogaf. Even things like WoWhead aren't safe, their ads have been known to have keyloggers in them.

Why do you trust Neogaf?

lol half of you probably use it on gaf too but no one has the balls to say it. Obviously I do not use it on gaf though, obviously.

There were questionable things in gaf ad's a few weeks ago also my nod32 was not liking it.

I use several different browsers, and have one with adblock set up (reserved for really annoying sites that I have to visit for work, but have video ads that play on loading), but don't use it on any of the others.

I've never had adblock, nor do I really need it. I think I have selective view when it comes to ads. I never ever notice them, and I think I've only clicked on a few throughout my whole life and never on purpose. Sites that have a ton of them are usually non-credible and/or shitty sites anyway.

The only thing I block are youtube ads, and that was partially accidental. I got a plugin for safari for HTML5, because youtube worked like crap on my macbook for some reason. Youtube suddenly worked well, but the ads never came up. Good riddance though as those things were CRAZY. I'm not going to watch a 30 second ad every time I want to watch some quick 30 second video my friend send me. No... just no. Put the ads on the side or some crap.

Odds are, if I'm on a site, it's because they have something I want. Whether it be entertainment, information, or community. I have no problem viewing ads on these sites, they are providing me with a service and my views are providing them money in return.

Plus, ads don't really bug me that much.

So, no, I don't "agree" with using one myself, but some people view them as a necessity, whatever, not my business.

I would rather donate literal cash then support a site via ad's. The notion of just don't visit the site is funny to me, been surfing the web the last 20 years ad blocks were a great invention after the dot com era.

Have you donated cash to any sites you visit?

Some of the GAF ads are hilarious, like reading the dating thread there'll be an ad at the top referencing asian singles in my area. GREAT SUCCESS

I run a script (Yousabletube) to disable all Ads and any other bullshit I don't want from YouTube. Also sets video settings properly.

Youtube is so much nicer now.

They can be useful for blocking specifics images. Like annoying/offensive avatars. Cutting add revenue is a dick move for site you frequent and enjoy, though. That said, I would pay for an add-free version of GAF, :P

Just so long as that godawful buzzing bee ad or whatever it was never comes back, I won't use adblock. You never know when you could miss out on something nifty.

Same same, gaf gold but you pay in blood for that!
