Do you care about backwards compatibility at all?

I can trade physical shit to GameStop or bestbuy, digital games you cannot trade.

How does this not make sense?!?
Oh..

You don't care about Physical Media BC because you can sell it?

I didn't realize that was the crux of your argument.

So..

If you could sell your DLC you would be fine if it was tied to the console it was created for?

I really don't care. I wouldn't mind if this generation's games worked on next gen's hardware, but beyond that, I don't care. If they re-release classics as downloadable games, that's all I'd really want.

I have absolutely no interest in backwards compatibility.

Typically I view it negatively because it steals budget from what really matters - the new console.

Given the lifespan of how long the newer consoles last before dying I care more about backwards compatibility now more than ever simply because I know that out of all my consoles its highly likely that the 360 will not survive as long as most of the others. If that happens I have a LOT of games I'd sorely miss.

Culdcept Saga is one of my favorite games alongside of KoF XIII and UMVC3. On top of that Me an my wife play Warriors Orochi 3 together and I play a lot of shmups and have at least 6 disc ones for the 360. Given the cost of importing some of those shmups I'd HATE to have to rebuy a console to use them maybe 8 years from now. I really want backwards compatibility and was pretty irritated that the 360 completely failed at it. KOF 2002 wouldn't even play after the patch and 2003 had so many graphical bugs it was unplayable. I even bought at launch MVC2 and it goes for a ton these days plus I unlocked everything in it. It wouldn't play and I had to buy the digital release. Plus remember digital arcade is something I want to be able to keep so heres hoping they at least let me redownload things I've bought on their arcade onto a new console.

New systems that have backwards compatibility start with the complete library of their predecessors and continue to let the player get value from that gen's games. Why would I be against that?

I care a whole lot about it, and its something I want to see in future consoles. I still regret not getting an launch unit PS3 for the ps2 bc. And I love it on my portables too. I worry about my systems breaking in the future so its nice to have an option to play those games in the future. However I wont be surprised to not see it in future xbox/ps releases. Which would be a downer, but one I kind of expect to happen.

How would people feel if Microsoft and Sony both came out and said at launch "If you want BC in your console, you need to buy it now as after 1 year from launch we will be removing BC from our hardware to drop the price by xyz."

I see a lot of people on the board wish that they had BC in their PS3 but that never bought one at launch. Possibly because they assumed it would be in the console for it's entire life. At least that way you'd know you only had a limited time to get what you want.

I won't be interested in the ps4 if it doesn't have full BC with ps1/ps2/ps3 games.

I appreciate the wii BC on the wii u, but nintendo did it in a pretty stupid half assed way.

I used to think it was an important feature but I hardly end up actually playing my old games on new systems. It's a nice feature but not essential.

If it affects performance then I don't want BC on a console. The previous console would be cheaper due to the new one releasing anyway.

Yes, actually very much so. I played a on of older Playstation 2 games still on my Playstation 3 for the first year or two. And I still play Playstation 1 games on my PSP and PS3 on a regular basis even up to last week I was playing Crash 3 on my PS3. Xbox 360, I went back and played a lot of older games on there, plus Halo 2. And for the Gamecube games, I still have my Wii setup for that right now.

edit: if the digital downloads from the PS3 and 360 do not transfer over to the next consoles, I will be highly upset and probably will not buy more than 1 or 2 games DD on consoles next gen. I didn't spend a ton on DD this gen, but probably something like $250 worth that I would like to be able to access next gen.

yes, the next xbox better be able to play all the xbla games i bought or there's gonna be hell to pay.

Not at all. I like the new digital approach of releasing classics and re-mastered/HD version of older games. I won't be getting rid of my PS3 after my PS4 purchase right away, since I'll likely still have a backlog. And its not worth Sony having to include more hardware into a new system that would likely just up the price.

As long as my PSN account tranfers over to my PS4, I'll be fine. (which would be stupid if it didn't)

I believe console games are best played on their native platforms anyway, so no. It's nice to have though.
But then again, Sony is pretty much the only party that has three gens of similar carriers to do such BC with anyway. And we all know how that worked out.

It would funny if MS's next console would have BC for the previous two though. Just to see how long they'ld keep it up.

It's an obsolete function in the age of digital downloads though. Much like PC's must make efforts to stay BC, so will consoles going forward. Actually, it's pretty obvious that the definition of "platform" is changing altogether.

Nope don't care. I had my fun with the games and consoles of the previous generation and got my money worth, don't need to play every game. Out with the old, in with the new. Everything gets boxed up, once in a blue moon I'll pull out an old system but generally don't really want to play ugly ass SD games purely for nostalgic purposes.

Ideally, EVERY console would have perfect BC, even if it meant buying peripherals (IE a USB or proprietary port accessory that was a cart slot for NES/SNES/N64 games on GC/Wii/Wii U). Well, or if systems could be built to last centuries and you could easily get one produced for you whenever, but in both cases reality tends to be unfair, so I like to have BC within reason, and I do worry that Nintendo held back too much with Wii U to accommodate Wii.

Do wish there was at the very least FAR stronger, near perfect support for downloading older games digitally, but I guess that's hobbled by a killer combination of apathy (from consumers and from publishers) and older licenses/copyright issues that get in the way. Latter could be addressed I imagine if there were the right cases to loosen things up or outright allow older works within reason, but only better foresight can address the former, and given how often assets get thrown away I doubt the industry has much of that at all. Nevermind when companies go out of business, or worse yet seem to become recluses that want to do nothing with their IP like IREM.

No since I've sold pretty much all my games and rarely visit digital ones I bought again. If anything this generation has taught me to be more selective of my choices and wait for deals on maybe games.

It's a nice bonus, but I wouldn't pay for it if I had a choice. I tend to keep my old systems.

Yes, because if I want to play games that were within a generation of each other, I don't want to have the two consoles hooked up next to each other, that's a massive waste of space for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of space to begin with. Plus, in the beginning of a new console's life cycle, I'll still spend a lot of time playing games from the last generation (Wii's BC with GC game especially)

Not really, I usually don't move on to a new console until I'm done with the previous one.

Haven't played a single PS1 game on my PS2 and haven't played a PS2 game on my PS3.

If only for digital downloads then yes. I bought games that I don't wish to repurchase (how many times am I going to buy sonic 1 & 2, really) and would be disappointed if there isn't some form of it.

Considering I bought my old school 60G PS3 just to play PS2 games yeah its important to me.

In general its highly appreciated and from a business perspective still drives sales of software even when the previous system is dead. Also consumers appreciate it as they dont have to keep around multiple systems as not everyone has massive amounts of "shelf space" to keep everything around.

Extremely important to me - especially if they want me to become an early adopter. It's great to be able to avoid any potential droughts in the new console's release schedule by playing old awesome games from a previous console.

There's no way I'd have bought a Wii U so early if it wasn't for the fact I could enjoy my 40+ Wii games on it. I really appreciate that Nintendo almost always gives users an easy upgrade path.

Not anymore. I gave up on trying to recapture memories of playing games from previous generations, and just leaving them in the past. If a specific old game happens to pop up on a digital service (XBL, PSN, etc) then I might double-dip. But beyond that it's a feature that can, these days, be axed without much worry.

If it wasn't for BC on my Vita, I'd probably never touch the thing.

And if/when Nintendo ever sorts out the whole account tied to a single system thing, the Wii U BC will be nice because I've basically ignored everything they've done since the Gamecube. Again it all depends on whether or not they fix that account thing 'cause otherwise I'm not buying one.

Back in the day I bought the 80GB PS3 that comes with built-in BC thinking that I'd actually use it to play PS2 games but I haven't. I think I played the original Shadows of the Colossus on it once but that's about it.

I've popped in GTA San Andreas and Psychonauts a few times on the 360 but otherwise, meh.

Yes, completely. I'm not digging out a original Xbox every time I want to play an Xbox game. Still pretty lame that the BC on 360 is pretty crappy. The BC on PS3 is really nice. I don't have to dig out old consoles if I want to play older games.

Is anyone ok with a console not having downloadable titles BC?

On one hand:
New console for new games
Old console isn't going anywhere

On the other:
Can't resell

I've never sold any game so I can't relate, all my old consoles and most of my old games (the ones I've kept are because of BC) have ended up being gifted eventually

As many others have said, I care more about the backwards compatibility of my digital games than my disk based titles. Also, with Nintendo (any maybe others?) only extending backwards compatibility to the previous generation, I still have to hold onto my Wii and DS to play my Gamecube and GBA library. Yes, some of those titles will eventually be on Virtual Console for Wii U and 3DS, but even if I wanted to rebuy my games, I highly doubt things like Baten Kaitos Origins is going to make the cut.

I would like it, but it's not even close to something like a deal breaker. Especially if it's better for the console in the long run like it probably will be with the PS4 changing architectures.

Only if saves are backwards compatible this gen. Games are increasing requiring more player investment now, especially with more online integration, and since not all stuff is saved in the cloud, it would be a shame to lose it all.

I just discovered some Wii games that are really cool, thanks to the Wii U's Wii emulation. Xenoblade Chronicles, Sin & Punishment, MadWorld, and Muramasa are awesome.

Absolutely.

PC gamers are not forced to scrap their games when they buy a new video card, and I'm tired of doing so when I replace my console.

I fully expect the next XBOX to be backwards compatible and will pitch a fit if it is not.
