Do you have friends that hate mainstream shit...

I, like many on GAF, am that friend. Especially with regards to music. Oh well, I'm just too damn cool and underground to care.

People who keep saying GAF, why do you keep coming back then? :p

In any case, it does seem like I'm the type who doesn't necessary like mainstream stuff, but it's not because it's mainstream. I just like what I like, though it's usually not very popular.

There's nothing inherently wrong with hating media that's mainstream, but if the only reason you dislike that media is because it's mainstream, you're a pretentious asshole.

Like whatever you like regardless of how many other people do, or what anybody else's opinion of the things you like might be.

By virtue there are certain qualities that come with being mainstream, and I don't like those qualities.

I wouldn't be friends with someone like that, no. Someone that hates something just because it's mainstream isn't even forming their own opinion.

Okay, I can understand that. If the qualities of mainstream media don't appeal to someone, hey, that's totally fine.

Usually, though, when someone says they dislike something for being mainstream, it's implied that their dislike stems from it's popularity, which is just dumb.

for no other reason than it's mainstream? Like the people that want to pound in your head how bad Pulp Fiction is, and how vastly superior Reservoir Dogs is. Can't they both be really fucking good? At first you may think "so? that's just their opinion", but no. The further into the discussion you'll get, the more likely they'll slip and just spit it out "it's too mainstream" or some garbage like that. Why do some people do this? Does it give us a sense of intellectual superiority over the 'common folks'?

Do Adam Sandler movies count? Then I am guilty as charged.
