Tried PSVR and Oculus Quest. Didn't feel its worth money to spend on. The content mostly sucked, the unit is still too heavy and uncomfortable to wear where it annoys me to have a good time, and too much of a hassle to set up. I rather invest in 4K tv with great screen size.

Valve Index here. It's really cool tech and once you're inside having a great time, it's easy to stick around for awhile and experience something you can't get anywhere else. This is especially true for multiplayer based games where interaction with other players is on an unprecedented level compared to the bog standard console and multiplatform style gaming. Standing there interacting with players by waving your hands accurately, picking up items and throwing them around, delicately placing them or any other number of cool things you can do when you have 6 degrees of freedom to express yourself, it really just makes it feel like you have a deeper connection with those other players in a way seeing a generic animated avatar in say Call of Duty or Minecraft simply cannot convey.

I will say this, Death Stranding was going to lose no matter what because it does suck ass so that has nothing to do with VR or HL:A, it's just a bad game going up against a good one.

HTC Vive. Sadly, I haven't been able to use it since I moved into the new home a couple years ago. Even though my potential play space has grown exponentially. I have two issues.

The first is that I'm currently only rocking a 1080 and I'd like better performance in VR so I'm waiting for these new cards.

The second is that my PC is in my office, and my living room, where all the space is, is about 20 feet away just to the center of the living room. Don't know how long the cables can be before performance starts to degrade.

If anyone has any solutions for the second issue please let me know. I can even run the cables under the house. I just don't want to have to move my PC every time.

I only own a PSVR so I haven't played Alyx, but I have watched playthroughs on youtube and it looks insane. The level of interactivity while nothing new in VR has that AAA polish the medium needs.

I just want Alyx to win GOTY, helping VR get more recognition, grow faster and so we get more incredible games.

I was surprised about Half-Life: Alyx winning two matchups in the GOTG tournament, and I was wondering whether there are more VR owners here than I expected. Or maybe people actually only vote if they've played both games :messenger_open_mouth:. Or maybe Death Stranding just sucks :messenger_astonished:.

So GAF, what's your VR status and how much do you use the one you own?

Didn't follow the other bout but as for Death Stranding... isn't that game just a meme now? Does anyone genuinely think it's a good game? Haven't played either of them but a friend has it and says while it's therapeutic to do those long delivery missions, there's not that much in terms of 'game' to do.

I own a PSVR and a Valve Index. Both are set up at room scale in different rooms, and they're both awesome!

In the coming gen, I'm really hoping for:
  • Much higher display resolution - it's decent now, but NEEDS to be sharper
  • Less weight - again, it's just good right now, but NEEDS to be lighter (PSVR actually gets the edge here, I feel)
  • Wireless - I can deal with the wires, but sometimes you just want them gone. I want true wireless VR in a premium headset with a powerful host machine (go away, Quest!)
  • Heat/Smell - Sometimes the heat generated and/or manufacturing smell of the headsets can accelerate the onset of fatigue or headaches. Make 'em cooler and use better materials that don't smell like chemicals.

I have PSVR. Astrobot made the entire purchase worth it for me. Every other game I play on it I feels like a bonus.

PSVR. I like it and Astrobot is one of my top gaming experiences, the playstation move tracking is quite horrible though, I hope they can improve that for PSVR2 so that i can play games like Blood & Truth properly.

Owned an original Rift, had to sell it due to motion sickness. I unfortunately tried to force my way through it and...yeah. Found out that’s a no no, by then far too late. Now I can’t even think about VR without getting nauseated.

Tech’s mind blowing, unfortunately I can’t use it. I hope to try it again in the future when the tech has improved, perhaps my aversion was due to this insufficiency, but the truth is I can’t step onto a boat in a calm harbor without getting ill. I’m exceptionally susceptible to motion sickness. I even got sick doing Tiltbrush and art programs that weren’t at all aggressive.

I got my hands on an HTC Vive before anyone else (that's not a developer). I also bought the Valve Index last Spring mostly for Half Life Alyx.

backed up the original Oculus campaign, then got a Rift for free for being a backer.
sad thing ive never had a PC capable pf VR so its been packed up on a shelve 😭.
then I got a PSVR where the only thing that made it worth was Astro Bot.
Biggest problem for me is the entry level is just expensive (for the real deal games like Alyx)

Didn't even saw the thread until it was over, it probably was buried, it would of been better if those were pinned during the match duration.

For the record i would of voted for Death Stranding, Alyx is alright but there are better and more unique games for the platform, Death Stranding it's one of a kind for now.

just purchased an Oculus Rift S and it arrived yesterday. i set it up today and played around in it for the first time. so cool! loved playing around in Google Earth, dialing up my childhood homes, flying around the planet like a god. although what things will be in 3D is very inconsistent -- sometimes cranes in a shipping yard are 3D modeled yet not the Great Pyramid or the Sphinx. come on, Google, what about do no evil? you flattened the pyramids. lol

this is great. just playing around at first and having a blast. i have done most of this stuff at other people's houses at this point, but it is still quite spellbinding. even doing the same old robot with cartridges tutorial i was having fun looking at everything. bought Vader Immortal, Star Wars Squadrons, Half Life Alyx, and some others. also Vorpx, which i tried with Death Stranding. it looked really cool and was pretty nice. if stuttery.

anyone have any game recommendations? also im thinking of making my own games, since you can apparently make 3D models with the free Adobe app in this? then export them to a format Unreal Engine can read? that for real?

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
anyone have any game recommendations?
And here is a preliminary, not necessarily updated with all the latest things (so, just participate in the thread, duh) list of VR games I can basically recommend, obviously always depending on your preferences (and excluding obvious must have shit like Beat Saber and Half-Life: Alyx):

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners has a cool campaign full of great action & some resource scavenging.

Budget Cuts is a stealth puzzle adventure series with nicely integrated teleport mechanics.

Apex Construct is a sci fi immersing adventure game with archery action at its core.

Cubism is a wonderful puzzle game that's sure to entertain your neglected grey matter.

Grapple Tournament is next gen PVP arena FPS with all the classic trappings redefined for VR.

Stormland is an open world shooter, more limited than it seems at first but still fun as hell.

The Room VR is a wonderful continuation of the famous puzzle adventure series, perfectly adapted to VR!

The Thrill of the Fight is a true boxing sim, if less fancy than the gamey Creed and its Rocky license.

Journey of the Gods is a Zelda-lite linear action adventure that's simple but polished and works really well.

Pistol Whip is the new kid on the rhythm game block, I love it like it’s a funky musical Virtua Cop-like.

Drop Dead is a fun riff on The House of the Dead, not nearly as tight but maybe the best of the genre in VR.

In Death is an archery based rogue-lite I spent many hours in early on despite the limited scope.

SUPERHOT VR is a puzzle action shooter with cool slow motion mechanics. Be like Neo!

Eleven: Table Tennis is a table tennis game said to be the most sureally realistic yet with a focus on PVP.

Racket Fury is an alternative table tennis game that is also pretty good with various solo gameplay options.

Catch & Release is a fishing game. Who doesn’t like fishing? I want Twilight Princess fishing in VR now.

Moss is a third person action adventure, you lead a sword wielding mouse as if in a diorama of a fairy tale.

Down the Rabbit Hole is yet another fairy tale adapted to VR, with its own twists, turns and unique style.

Asgard's Wrath is a made-for-VR action RPG with a Viking theme that many gamers enjoyed.

Space Junkies is a PVP zero gravity arena FPS, like Quake in space, great for some instant action.

Ultrawings is a flight game, not quite a sim, maybe a bit like pilot wings, goals and stuff to get through.

Windlands 2 is an action adventure with not-web-swinging and archery, it’s also co-op capable.

Vox Machinae is a PVP focused giant mech combat game with awesome interactive cockpits.

Raw Data is probably the best of the arena/wave shooters with different classes, progression & co-op.

Onward is my favorite “standard” FPS, PVP focused, some co-op & the best feel/controls for weapons/gadgets.

Contractors, Pavlov and other popular VR FPS games put their own twist to the military theme and style of play.

Population: One is atm the most popular VR Battle Royale, it's arcadey with + hair, simplified reloading, etc.

Lone Echo is a must play astronaut adventure, the free PVP Echo VR and its $10 Combat DLC rock too!

Red Matter is another sci fi adventure with a different spin than the above and great interactions.

Dash Dash World is a well made cute kart racing game with solo and multiplayer modes galore.

VTOL VR is a really cool light simulator of combat aircraft with amazing cockpits perfectly suited for VR.

Blade & Sorcery has the best physics based melee combat but doesn’t yet have progression etc.

V-Racer Hoverbike is a cool futuristic racer where you can lean to realistically control your jet moto thing.

Racket: Nx is a unique blend of skill, puzzle and high score fueled shenanigans that's worth checking out.

Pixel Ripped is a duo of games with great nostalgic trips down gaming memory lane in special VR fashion.

There are many more, early access or otherwise. I like where Vengeful Rites is going as a VR RPG with sword wielding, spell casting, the works, Karnage Chronicles is a cool dungeon crawl with co-op and there’s also the free A Township Tale for some online rpging/surviving/crafting, alongside social playgrounds like Rec Room, VRChat, or even Bigscreen. STRIDE is shaping up to be a very compelling Mirror's Edge-like game that takes practice and skill while Crunch Element is a very promising procedurally generated co-op romp through destructible military compounds. VR even has visual novel style games like Altdeus: Beyond Chronos and Spice & Wolf 1 & 2. There are also ports of traditional games, or games that equally support VR and flat gameplay. Titles like Skyrim VR, Phasmophobia, No Man’s Sky, DCS, Elite Dangerous, DiRT Rally 1 & 2, PayDay 2, IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battles, Star Wars: Squadrons, Project Wingman, Rez Infinite and others are great in VR! Some like Fallout 4 VR weren’t as successful however so some caution is necessary. Others have been converted by fan modifications, MotherVR is a great mod for Alien Isolation, with gamepad/mkb play like PSVR's Resident Evil VII, while the same creator is working on ReclaimerVR, a mod for Halo: The Master Chief Collection that will include hand tracking. Another developer released an Outer Wilds mod that's pretty great and comprehensive. Quake VR is also pretty damn amazing while you can even play the classic Doom engine games and Doom 3 in VR. There's no shortage of great experiences to be had for every gamer.

SuperhotVR! It's awesome man. You also don't need to move or walk in-game, so no motion sickness at all.

Gorn is very cool to. Some peopoe prefer Blade & Sorcery but that's just to realistic for me, it made me feel a little sick. :goog_relieved:

If you are a boomer you could also check mods for Doom, Wolfenstein, Quake and Half-Life, as those can be played in VR. Doom 3 too, but only with the BFG Edition I think.

VorpX is already delivering one of my dreams: playing Dark Souls in VR at 60fps. immersive mode using Geometry looks incredible and with the screen really close up, it's like i am really there, in Lordrian, or Oolacile, or Anor Londo. wow. i am amazed.

PSVR, I love it. I will get PSVR 2.0 day one. I hope it gets a Half-life Alyx port.
I dunno man, that sounds like wishful thinking aint it? :messenger_winking_tongue:

Hope it does tho. The more people play it the better. For the players that can enjoy it, and for the chances of getting more VR titles.

I have a Samsung Gear VR R325, which I got used, along with the controller, for €50. It's surprisingly good, with the OLED Screen of my Galaxy S9 phone. I have actually used it on PC using RiftCat, and it works well, but I still really want a "proper" headset, with its controllers.

Just today got Oculus 2. Can't wait to play Alyx and then not touch it until some major new release hits.

My wife will use it primarily for Phasmophobia since that is her main jam right now.

Games like beat saber or super hot that get recommended I have 0 interest in. Probably the most I've paid to play just 1 game...

Yep, being able to sit on a virtual movie theater during lockdown was really nice.

Nope and I never will, I'm not interested at all.
Have tou ever tried it? I thought it was a meme until I did, and my eyes where opened. Most immersive experience ever.

I have a GearVR from when I bought my Galaxy S7 new that's still great for...videos.

Also have a PSVR that's super fun, but I can only do like an hour or two at a time.

Currently borrowing a PSVR from a workmate during the Christmas holiday.

I've used it once to play Astro Bot and it was alright. To be honest, I've been too lazy to set it up again. That was a pain in the arse.

No, and as I said I'm not interested in it at all. I love gaming how I began to game in the '80s. With a controller in my hand on a couch in front of a tv. Conventional is good enough to immerse me.

What games would these be? I have played hundreds of hours in VR and Alyx is by far the best game.

I own the Quest 1 and 2. People need to stop sleeping on vr. It is the future.

You're really missing out. I played a bit of Minecraft using the Gear VR and an Xbox One controller, and it was a really awesome experience. But honestly, for me the coolest thing to do with a headset is media consumption.

Watching movies in big screen with random people is wild. Watched Black Hawk Down a few weeks back with some people who he never seen it. It was a good time.

Weird that there's no vote option for the original Vive, anyway that's the one I got + the index knuckles, was thinking for a long time now if I should switch to the Index headset, but I'll wait it out just one more generation to get a major upgrade :D

3 full years and counting since got me a psvr Skyrim bundle, now with Oculus Quest 2

it's the only nextgen thing out there in gaming in a very long while - a larger paradigm shift than going from 2D to 3D in the mid 90s

Very sorry that big studios are not getting VR mode in all racers and shooters, but even more sorry for the poor souls missing this...

Skyrim was one of the few games I played on PSVR. It's the main reason I bought the unit, and very few other games interested me. It's possible that I played Skyrim, experienced motion sickness, and decided on that basis it wasn't going to work for me. I did play a few other games (can't remember which), but I only have memories of motion sickness in Skyrim

motion sickness will be there waiting for you even if you play ultra smooth on a top pc

it's not in any game, it's in your body, a reaction when eyes and body disagree about perceived motion

most people grow a tolerance to the feeling in short time though

I've got a Rift S which is good enough for now. I will upgrade it before January 2023 when they force original Oculus accounts to login using Facebook.

I have been enjoying games like Half-Life Alyx, Boneworks, Tetris Effect, Polybius, and Beat Saber with my son. I also have a ton of VR enabled games that play in VR or on the TV that I've yet to experience. I can't wait to try Grip Shift and Distance in VR. Two driving games that I bet look amazing in VR. I just need a decent steering wheel now.

One thing amazing about Half Life Alyx is the custom maps that are being made. The greatest map sets so far are reimagined Goldeneye levels. Those maps simultaneously feel true to both Half Life and Goldeneye if you can believe that. Source Engine 2 looks excellent in VR.

I also have some boxing games in the arcade and realistic/fitness categories that I can't wait to play. Creed, Thrill of the Fight, and Knockout League.

Right now I am moving things around to have a dedicated game room with a bigger play area for VR, so I haven't played it lately, but I can't wait to get back into it.

I'm in the sweet spot between a decent pc and a decent headset. Most games look great with no hitches, or screen door effect so no complaints from me.

Oh man, you should really consider upgrading sooner. Playing on a Rift S is among the worst experiences for VR going into 2021.
