Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

In honor of this announcement - even though I don't/won't own a Wii - I have broken out my trust copy of the best game in the franchise: DKC2. Gotta get those DK coins!

I bet that after you beat the final Tiki boss K. Rool comes out as the real final boss.

Believe.

Because it doesn't have fucking Kremlings? How about you actually watch gameplay videos.

I played the game, silly. It strikes me as little more of a balance than DK Jungle Beat was. I rather enjoyed the game, but that doesn't mean a few more call-backs can't be made. The lack of Kremlings is but just one factor, but I appreciate you assuming as if it was my entire argument. Off the top of my head: the lack of any familiar enemies, missing animal friends (which may or may not be in the final game), the complete absence of water levels, and some general gameplay control issues that don't quite jive with the original.

ETA: Mario Galaxy really nailed the proper balance of retro-references to modern updates, imo. And it came after the (imo disappointing) Mario Sunshine, which aside from the core cast of characters, had almost no references to previous games--no power-ups, all new enemies, etc.

Where are you in the game? I started a new one last week and had a blast once again. :D It aged with grace and still looks great, imo. :) I'm in the lava world now!

I hated 90% of the water levels in DKC1-3, so I'm not really broken up about it.

I'm more concerned with the game taking itself too seriously and not having the
cheeky Rare sense of humor in it. That and Dixie rocking on guitar and Diddy with the boombox.

:(

I feel like the water levels are there for pacing reasons, more than anything else. They are, by design, slower than the more action-heavy levels. That, combined with the wonderful visuals and music almost made them calming--a welcomed break from the more conventional set pieces.

I'll give you that, however I think the bee hive and ice cave levels had a similar effect.
We'll see how it goes.

Then your attitude here makes even less sense than those who haven't.

There's absolutely no reason to include old enemies in this new game if they don't want to.

I'll agree on the animal buddies, because they were one of the few unique things about DKC, but there's no reason thus far to think that there won't be a similar mechanic in this game. And, unlike the underwater levels, which were terrible, there's no reason to get rid of the animal buddies (or - the mechanic).

Your incessant nostalgia-fueled desire to play the same game that came out years ago is what is "ruining" this for you. Nothing more, nothing less.
The lack of Kremlings is but just one factor, but I appreciate you assuming as if it was my entire argument.
I ain't assuming shit. Kremlings are symbolic of your entire argument, and my response extends to any other complaint you have. Except, as mentioned above, the animal buddies.

Coming from someone who hasn't played the game? How does being more informed lessen my opinion?

Twig said:

Oh, I see--so if the developer wants something a certain way, then they're objectively right and can't be disagreed with? By that measure, every game would be perfect. I have a right to want more from my games, and you have a right not to.

Sure there is, by virtue that nothing along those lines has been shown yet. This isn't concrete proof in any way, of course, but it does hint more strongly toward that than not.

Pray tell where did I use the word "ruining," or anything even close to that? Please don't put words in my mouth--ones that are gross exaggerations, no less. In fact, I said quite the opposite when I stated that " I rather enjoyed the game. "Also, I like how a few posts is considered "incessant" :lol

Your exact question suggests otherwise: "Because it doesn't have fucking Kremlings?"

That aside, I'm not sure why you're arguing with me on this. I feel like they could go a bit further than they did, you don't. We're not going to change each other's minds, so why bother trying?

Hmmm. I'll admit I have probably been too hostile in my quote-unquote debate with you, and for that I apologize. It wasn't my intention to do so. Text fails to express the tone of my statements, and I tend to exaggerate more than is safe on the interwebs.

I have counter-arguments to the things you are saying, but I think it's better if we just agree to disagree. :3

EDIT: Damnit your edit beat me to it. ):

Right on; no hard feelings =)

Like I said, it's still a really fun game and I'm looking forward to it.

emulating Aquatic Ambiance would be a titanic task, expecially for the music, same goes for Stickerbrush Symphony. Jesus Christ Rare's musical talent was impressive

Wait. This game does have a run button right?

No. At least not when used with the Wiimote + Nunchuk configuration, which was the only was on display.

I miss it too (but it may be used in the NES-style configuration)

2-d platformer without a run button? That's why I don't like Klonoa as much as I should...
So sad....

Star Fox Adventures did the same thing. 'nuff said.

Oh god it would be like Star Fox Adventures all over again.

Do not want.

I have not played Star Fox Adventures, but having K. Rool show up as the final boss would be a huge cop out after months of "Hey dudes, no crocs in this game!" and, as a result, hilarious. :lol

Additional points for New Game+ mode having Kremlings in place of the Tikis.

I actually agree with this. It would make me laugh and laaaaugh and is the only way I would accept the K. Rool abomination's presence in DKCR.

And you'll fight him underwater the entire fight...

With Engarde...

Aquatic Ambiance rock remix playing in the background...

It would also be the perfect way to have the pirate theme re-introduced for DKCR2.

What the hell, my DKC2 main file is gone :(
There's a 2 player one I started in January with a friend, and only that.. I was going to go for the coins. So annoyed right now.

I just started a new file last night and blew through a 1/3 of the game in 40 minutes. It's not so bad =)

It's so wierd.. even my old SNES cartridge had my save files, I must've deleted this by accident. Oh well, as you said, you go through them fast enough, and it's not as if I had that many coins.

Yeah, I've noticed some of my old SNES cartridges will delete saves randomly. Even odder, with Mario RPG, none of the saves appeared a few times, but turning if off and back on restored them! Unfortunately, I lost them all for good a few months ago--damn cartridge batteries...

Heh, I busted it out this past weekend as well... and holy shit is it way harder than I remembered.

DKC2 is way harder than I remembered as well. I'm quite sure I made my way through the whole game on my own when I was 8, I feel ashamed of myself. Bramble Scramble is driving me absolutely mad, playing it I think I had my first actual rage quit. I tried out the Lost World, it is truly what nightmares are made of.

I'm going to miss all the enemy crocs making the same cry when you defeat them.

Retro Studios is showing to be an extremely dynamic developer. I'm just absolutely shocked by the sheer transition from the Prime series to this, it's startling. They're the most integral developer right next to HAL Labs imo.

If there's anything I could change about this up coming game, it would be to remove "Returns" from the title for something else. It just sounds silly to me.

Yea I'm with them too. It's a reboot, not a remake. I want a new experience with Retro's own creativity and flair attached.

I cant wait for this, the only small gripe I have is that there are no underwater levels. =(
I seriously think Retro will have some other form of "alternate" level that replaces the underwater ones. I mean, they can't say they have paid this much attention to the older games only to simply take out one of the most memorable aspects without replacing it with something just as good. I just can't believe they would do it...rather, I don't want to believe they would lol

I've been thinking some sort of sky level for a while now, but I'm not sure how.

I want this game so bad.

OMG, the Lost World is amazing once you get the timing down, then it's easy to just sail through the levels. I always wanted more of those levels.

I also wonder why IGN doesn't think there will be animal buddies simply due to multiplayer. Yoshis worked out fine in NSMB Wii.

I'm not worried about Retro not being able to add their own creativity and flair; I think we've already seen that in spades. The game's going to be a blast. But having other Kong characters adds so much to the world - it really is Donkey Kong COUNTRY, not just Donkey Kong on an island all alone (or with Diddy). The world-building aspects of the old games really appealed to me; I hope it isn't just tossed out the window.

I'm replaying them in order on the Wii right now. I'm about halfway through DKC and while most of the levels are pretty easy, my ass got kicked by the first mine cart level. Died probably 15 times before I got through it.

I'm finally getting to the barrel stuff that I remember being the best stuff in the game and it is fantastic. That is really where the game shines. The platforming is decent, but the timed barrel blasts is what really set the series apart in my opinion.

Looking forward to DKC2 as I recall that having easily the best levels of the series.

Also, the boss fights in the game are really, really lame :lol

IGN's hate for the Kremlings and the Kong family in particular is baffling. They seriously didn't like DIXIE KONG?
Let me guess. You're sexually attracted to this monstrosity.

A fucking abomination. This thing is straight up offensive to anyone who appreciates even a modicum of good art design. It is shameful that this ever came out of anything related to Nintendo. Someone needs to be punished for this horrendous creature's mere existence as a fictional character in a video game.
