Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

You know, when I heard the rumor of Retro doing a new DK, I was a pretty skeptical...But this looks so awesome.

I <3 2D platformers.

The chances David Wise is working on this are very high.

He quit rare
Did some remixes of his work for diddy kong racing ds
And since they are using his original music in the trailer, he has to be features in the credits
I would be suprised if retro didnt take the chance to get him working on videogame music again.

PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN!!!!! :(

Listen. When you're talking about the follies of sequels or your opinion on the quality of certain games/franchises, that's completely up to you. I even agree with certain points. But the moment you start telling me why I enjoy certain things? Get the fuck out of here.

*claps*

Looks Jungle Beaty to me.
Especially with the player able to see so much of the environment. DKC was really close up in comparison. One big reason was probably because the graphics were so taxing on the system.

Amazing how this and Kirby end up being my most anticipated games from this year's E3.

2D side-scrollers representing!

Looks great. Awesome throwback. Wii is definately turning into that system with NSMB, PunchOut, NBA Jam...and now this? It's like im back in 1994 in a good way. The downside is that its Retro behind this, after years of waiting for their next project. Im sure they'll do a bang up job, its just a shame they are relegated to the kinds of games NST should be doing. After Metroid Prime I thought these guys were on thew way up, there with the likes of Bungie. Wish we could have seen them spread their wings.

Retro deserves to create a new IP, I'm so tired of the same names over and over and OVER again.

I know--I'm SO SICK of the yearly Donkey Kong Country releases, am I right? I mean, you'd think they'd stop at Donkey Kong Country 26, but NO.

This looks good, but I was hoping that Retro would use a tad more creative freedom with the DK franchise, rather than adhering closely to the design template of an existing series. Oh, well...

Retro is the new Rare :)

Not even close.

On the Nintendo 64 Rare released a lot of top quality stuff. What has Retro done on Wii? Metroid, Donkey Kong. Some people are ridiculous with the blind hate for Rare.

Will love this game for sure, but still think a bit of waste for Retro.
I was expecting Mirror's Edge treatment, not a 2D 'retro' game.
Maybe they are working on something else also?

Um I think that was more of a compliment for Retro than an insult for Rare. :lol

Avatars, if anyone fancies a change

From faux-3-d to 3-d. Eh, I like the plasticine look, personally, but I'm oh-so-ready.

So glad they are going away from the Climber/ Jungle Beat BS.

Boo! Maybe it's just because I'm a huge Clu Clu Land fan, but I adored King Of Swing and Jungle Climber. Also, I'm pretty sure NeoGAF hates you for insulting Jungle Beat.

Anyone else wish they would have tried imitating rare's prerendered 3d sprite look? I don't mean that they should do exactly that, but maybe do their own spin on it. After the n64 donkey kongs it would've been an awesome return to form.

I would have been happy with DKJB look

looks like a mix to me. The environments remind me a lot of the old school DKC, but the enemies are straight up Nintendo-Tokyo (they were the ones that made Jungle Beat, right?)

DKC has never been as good as Mario when it comes to precise platforming, so its really good to see that Retro seems to be adopting the more Jungle Beat approach, because that game was all about the "flow", like PoP or Mirrors Edge. This is the kind of game where you just don't stop moving. Where you get into the rhythm of the actions and the game just streams by.

I like it!

Which the game has in spans it seems, so all is well in the end :D
Looks a lot like a classic EAD's graphically flavoured game, which is ten times better than anything RARE-like prerendered gfx could ever bring to the table.

I think everything important has already been said. I haven't been this excited for a video game since...well, DKC3.

I love that banana collecting noise.

This and Kid Icarus and Zelda have just made my month...

I think I lost it at around this point:

I love the way the red stays there >.< it just looks so stylish

And I love the way Diddy runs on Donkey when he does that ball move >.>!

Looks so awesome.

When I first learned that Retro was making a new Donkey Kong game, I was skeptical. They did a good job with the Metroid series, but I wasn't sure how the company would handle a more light-hearted IP. Color me surprised. Donkey Kong Country Retruns is everything I could have asked for in a Donkey Kong game and then some. It's downright gorgeous, the gameplay looks fantastic, and the music had me pumped.

When they started playing the music, I dropped everything I was doing at work to just look at it and nearly squealed with excitement, lol. That song, lol and the game, DKC was one of the first games I ever beat on my own growing up.

<3 This music.

Man this takes me back. DKC was the first SNES game I had (I didn't get a SNES until the bundle with DKC one Christmas)

Can't wait for this game.

"If you listen, you can hear it coming"
One of the best lines of the conference, IMO

I remember back when the internet was in it's infancy and I was logging on to the Nintendo AOL page to see new pictures of the upcoming Donkey Kong Country. Hearing the trailer music and seeing the video brought me back to those days. I used to bring my SNES and DKC with me when I went on ski trips in the winter with my family. My brothers and cousins would all play the game together to relax after a long day of skiing. Those were the days...

This game has been in development for at least 2 years according to HAL, so those of you that think this is coming off the coattails of NSMBWii's success, it isn't.

What a shame. I would say waste of talent, but most of Retro's best artists have left over the last few years, so they have been spared the shame of being forced to work under this soulless Nintendo house style.

Hopefully Armature has strong financial backing and freedom, so they can offer more ex-Retro employees a home. Like Respawn is to Activision, Armature could be a home for those fleeing stifling corporate controls on creativity.
