I have a Panasonic Viera from 2010 that is 3D capable. I love Doom 3 and what to play it through again on console in 3D. Which version, 360 or PS3, should I get?
Anyone?

The framerate is a smooth 30 fps on PS3 *BUT* there was something really bizarre about the image that I really can't explain. It caused me a splitting headache which NEVER happens with 3D content. Really weird.i'd wait to see Digital Foundry's head to head to compare the 3D framerates of the two. they say it's coming soon, and they often post head to heads on saturdays, so it might not be a long wait. Dark said he saw some weird things on the PS3 version in 3D, with it's framerate. i don't think we've had any trusted eyes on the 360 version in 3D yet.
also, as a heads up, you're going to see a lot of crosstalk on your Viera whichever way you go, so keep that in mind.

Wait, so you're saying that the fact that it doesn't run quite as smoothly as the 360 version (it's very VERY close, though) means it's a bad port? Is that what you're suggesting?I don't understand why I'm not free to say this, when some users here are complained about the same thing on ps3 version, & they have the game. I continue to think is not that good ports. The game have to run equally on both platforms.
I honestly can't explain it. It was almost as if there was "ghosting" between frames or something. It didn't look right. There were no dips or changes in performance, however. The odd effect was 100% consistent.i thought you said it 'felt' like it was switching between 30 and 60 (even though it was running at a locked 30). i guess it's an issue with motion consistancy rather than framerate if so.
Yes, Sikkmod is fucking broken on AMD cards. There are ways to get SOME feature working, but it does not look the same. It never worked properly for me with an AMD card.downloaded sikkmod and wulffen texture pack und put them into my doom folder (vanilla doom 3) but it doesnt work somehow. the whole screen is flickering and some kind of shader effect is all over the screen. the wulffen textures arent loading. I can see soft shadows but no POM effect on textures. Is this a problem with amd cards ?
How's the framerate in 2D mode dark? I trust your opinion on framerates and I read somewhere in this thread about the PS3 version's framerate being a little weaker? The framerate is a smooth 30 fps on PS3 *BUT* there was something really bizarre about the image that I really can't explain. In 2D, it runs at 60 fps a good 95% of the time. There are dips that occur when too many alpha textures appear within close proximity to the camera and when too many dynamic lights appear during scenes with enemies (this is why the flashlight can cause dips). Unlike Rage, Doom 3 does not make use of a dynamic frame buffer and simply resorts to tearing when under load. How's the framerate in 2D mode dark? John Carmack said:We struggled a lot with the gun in stereoscopic views. FPS guns are almost always positioned in a physically unrealistic position to maximize 2D artistic impact, which is a big problem in stereo. With lots of guns and lots of animations, there isn't as much freedom to move them around as we would like. For the shipping game it was important that they never show clipped geometry, never penetrate into a wall, always allow the ammo readouts to be visible, and not have the muzzle firing point be too far away from the standard position. If you are willing to compromise some or all of those factors, you can improve the 3D effect.
Next game, we will be designing for stereo from the start.
I like fully realistic separation, but that actually exceeds one platform's submission guidelines, and we have been told that most people don't really want that much separation.
The stereoRender_deGhost variable does nothing in the shipping code. Earlier, I experimented with reducing the contrast and subtracting a fraction of the opposite eye, but it still wouldn't turn a bad 3D monitor into a good one, and I decided to just pull it out.

No, I was saying the floor looks more like what most of the game looked like, not just most of the floors.Hmm, so your eyes immediately look towards the floor?
That's fair enough.I know I'm always focused on the scene as a whole, not the quality of an individual surface. I don't find games with flat surfaces full of super high-resolution textures impressive in the least, for instance. It's the sheer variety per scene in Rage that really impresses me.
I disagree, I think while playing it looks ugly. It only ever looked good in very specific situations, which almost never occurred. While simply playing the game, the effect works great. It's only when you stop and look more closely at surfaces does it begin to suffer.
I find it irritating when websites use that sort of justification for harping on something. It's like someone reviewing STALKER today and calling it a broken game because that is how it shipped when any normal person would go download the Complete Mod.Sure, but it's important to note that, as shipped, the game is changed for the worse compared to the original.
We're just going to have to agree to disagree then. While playing the game, I think it looks fantastic most of the time. That area from which you posted that shot is beautiful while playing. No, I was saying the floor looks more like what most of the game looked like, not just most of the floors.

When you don't cheery pick the screens, the game looks like ass to me.
I don't really agree with that, you're reviewing a product, not the potential of a product. I certainly see what you mean, but I don't think that's really fair.I find it irritating when websites use that sort of justification for harping on something. I say this as a owner of all consoles, and a gaming PC that owns all of the Halo games. Halo is great, but it can't touch Doom 3. In gameplay, aphmosphere, and Story Doom 3 is in a completely different league than Halo.

The fact of the Doom 3 HD readme being in Russian is making this very difficult for me.
How do you get this thing in 1920x1080? Yes, I am running Doom3HD.exe not Doom3.exe.
All the more reason it should have been included in the game, and it's absence should be mentioned.I'm not referring to potential. I'm referring to what anyone with a functioning brain and knowledge of Google would do. Finding a way to adjust the fov in Doom 3 BFG took me all of 30 seconds.
God forbid someone might have to do something outside of the game.
All the more reason it should have been included in the game, and it's absence should be mentioned.
I'm merely using graphics mod recommendations from this thread. If they suggested stupid mods, then get in their ass.Why do people use these ridiculous packs? They are often outdated, have conflicting packages, bad settings, include mods that do absolutely nothing and so on.
eg I see that Doom 3 HD uses "1024x1024 Jumbo Size Monster Skins (Sadicimus)" which is nothing more than the original textures resized to 1024x1024 *facepalm* That will surely make them look great, no? LOL
Either go straight to the source and download sikkmod + monoxead + wulfen seperately or use a sensible pack of those like this (that does just that): http://forums.guru3d.com/showpost.php?p=4385520&postcount=160
It's up to date, by default has Sikkmod's options disabled and everything is set on default settings, and it has a nice config the author uses, in case you want to use that.
I strongly recommend everyone to use this instead of ridiculous collections like Doom 3 HD.
That guy's download link to his own mod is broken. That's what you get for hosting it on Mediafire. There's just a 200mb 6th part of a RAR set.Why do people use these ridiculous packs? Considering the PC audience is a little more 'engaged' (just generally, I'm not saying 100% of the time, of course), I think you can assume that they'd be aware of various mod alterations to correct certain issues. Personally I do think it's worth them noting fixes, and possibly even sources for them for readers, but I can see both sides I guess. So they should mention that it isn't an option present in game, but they shouldn't have to mention that it can be adjust outside of the game, this being Digital Foundry and all?
I have never really been impressed with their breakdowns especially with how they choose to focus on certain things and almost completely ignore others.
Thanks for answering. Framerate doesn't sound like a problem at all to me. The load times sound kind of a pain. Also, watching vids of people playing this game on consoles it seems to auto-save in the weirdest spots and seems to break the flow a bit.In 2D, it runs at 60 fps a good 95% of the time.
Now, I don't particularly like using the flashlight myself due to the offset (which was in the original too, it turns out) and the game very rarely tears with the flashlight disabled (at least up through the alpha labs).
That said, apart from Rage, it is perhaps the smoothest console FPS out there in terms of performance. Call of Duty (even on 360) doesn't even begin to offer this level of stability (though that game just drops frames rather than tearing).
I actually purchased the PS3 version purely out of curiosity, to be honest. I wanted to see what Carmack and crew could do with an engine that typically did NOT port well to the current consoles. I also wanted native gamepad support for Doom 3 (which I know is offered on PC as well but I was equally curious about the port on PS3).
The more significant PS3 problem, however, stems from the loading times. Each level can take between 30-40 seconds to load. The levels are quite long, so you don't hit loading points often, but death results in a reload which is just as slow (rendering higher difficulties impossible to enjoy). So, in that regard, it kind of sucks. I would assume that a proper install feature would have helped alleviate this problem.

I've been playing this for a few hours now and I'm just about to finish alpha labs. I still think this game is great, despite some flaws. It's just..plain fun to play.
id is hit and miss on actual worlds, but they always have solid gunplay.
I can totally agree with this.Yeah, it's the feeling of shooting things that just feels right. Hard to explain..
Maybe because it works just fine? I'm deeply sorry the pack is so offensive to you. Thank you for your contributions and correcting my dire dire error. "Why do these people use these ridiculous packs?" lmao
I see 100 posts in this thread alone about how nobody can figure out what sikkmod is trying to do or why it looks like shit when Doom HD puts all the pretty on right off the bat, aside from POM and resolution which have to be done manually. If someone wants to tinker they can get the pieces separate but don't be a jerk.
That and it has weapon mounted flashlight and nightvision built in, if you want it.
Edit the doomconfig.cfg file.
seta r_customHeight "1080"
seta r_customWidth "1920"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_mode "-1"
So all this mod talk got me curious enough to try it for myself...
Holy fuck.
I got that reflection thing working if you're still interested.
Hey angular, do you have an alternate link to that Doom 3 pack you posted earlier? The link you gave no longer works. The guy hosted his shit on Mediafire and it's totally fucked now.
Unfortunately no. The weapon sounds do need an overhaul. They sound better in the originals. The gameplay is still great and fluid.Did they remake the weapon sound effects?
I can't play D3 with the old effects. :<
Needs more OOMF, imo.
Bad luck, it seems mediafire deleted it thinking it's BFG (copyrighted content).
Come to think of it these services don't delete files on their own unless the copyright holder asks them, so this means Zenimax/Bethesda/id didn't want it up. Did the actual developer/publisher really think it's BFG? LOL.
I can't make any promises, but I'll see if I can reupload it tomorrow.
Oh wow...this game shows me why I loved shooters years ago and why I hate them now:
They were fun to play
I don't want a level system
I don't want perks
I don't want explosions and cinematic experiences
I don't want Call of Duty
I don't want a game that tells me where the fuck I have to go every second
I want a damn great shooter with damn good weapon spawns in Mp and a good SP campaign
Where are those games?
I miss them....
