Doom 4 Alpha Benchmarks

I'm really surprised about the reactions in this thread. Seems like a lot of PCGaf doesn't even know what Alpha means.

Not to mention what absurd conclusions are getting drawn from this.

Apparently the game will automatically adjust settings, not allowing the user to manipulate (not amenable to logic, but apparently setting is determined based on the volume of video adapter

I'm hoping this is just an Alpha thing or my 970 am cry. :(

I am sure it's an alpha thing, the FOV option wasn't there in the alpha but they enabled it, I'm willing to bet the advanced options just aren't there yet.

Yes. But both are crap, and both are made by Bethesda.

It's a physics thing, saw a post from one of the devs on Twitter saying they were looking into it though iirc.

Well this is the first iD Tech 6 game, so let's wait and see if its crap rather than going by a cracked alpha

This is a quick and dirty crack of an alpha with a bunch of unfinished stuff in it. Some of the things they enabled killed performance. Though you are a good example of why iD needs to get the beta out soon.

Also iD tech engine =/= Gamebryo engine

Weird thing to bench test an alpha, but I'm liking that this game looks like it'll be pretty demanding. Been wanting something really beefy to run ever since building a new rig.

locked at 60 as of that last alpha which, may I add, is already TWO MONTHS OLD.

Also, Bethesda doesn't own the Gmebryo engine; it's licensed to them, then heavily modified.

60fps lock - WTF?!
Tiago Sousa how did You even allow for that?

Hope is not entirely lost for removing the frame cap-

Seems a bit erroneous to me. However it could simply be a demanding game.

Edit: so there is a frame cap. Those results make total sense then.

?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?`!?!?!?!?!?`!?A

As I said, if your raw materials are garbage then you're SOL.

The framerate targeting mechanism in iDTech5 is somewhat core to the engine. I don't doubt that it would take a lot of work to remove it or at least make it more flexible.

This one is 2 months old

It's probably much older than that. The codebase from the alpha is likely 99% from a September or October build, possibly even earlier because they had the same map and mode playable at Quakecon and the later alpha appeared to be basically identical aside from some netcode stuff. I think the alphas are primarily for testing their servers and not the client so they probably don't care as much about keeping it up to date, and I'd guess it would be more maintenance than it's worth.

Weird, during the alphas my 980 was sitting mostly at 60 with the odd dips to 50 here and there.

Hopefully, optimization will be better by release...

Yeah, I think those of us who were actually in the alpha have confirmed that these results were faked. I still think that the website intentionally skewed performance advantage towards AMD.

How the mighty have fallen.

Pretty much.
Thats pretty depressing though, such a talent ;/ And he could just wait half a year and join CIG instead ;/

This should be first task he did after he joined id. I also cant believe to this day that Carmack actually made an engine around 60fps lock ;/

id Tech 4/5's 60FPS lock was implemented at a time when monitors didn't have refresh rates over 85hz; 60Hz was a good compromise. 120/144Hz monitors only really came about after Nvidia's big push for 3D; and even then they were only really intended to display 60hz 3D.

The engine was made for Rage, which was when they started heavily developing for consoles. They didn't want any framedropping on consoles at all. Sadly, the PC version suffered the same limitation, but that became a much lower priority for them.

Has it been the same ever since? I've never played their games with a >60hz monitor before so I don't know if the Wolfenstein games are the same.

You dont need 60+hz monitor to benefit from higher framerates, also CRTs.
RAGE released in 2011 btw.

Good explanation for any developer, not for id directed by Carmack. Also mouse had input lag in RAGE, which is another inexcusable fact about that game ;/

Wolfenstein is timing-locked at 60. The Evil Within/Psycho-Break isn't some how.

Oh they are, in addition to a whole bunch of other terrible problems.

You can unlock it past 60? Never heard of that for Evil with in.

The game now has a 60FPS cap option, but if you type in +com_allowConsole 1 into the start parameters, start the game, hit "Insert" and type in "r_swapInterval 0", then the framerate unlocks; doesn't go above 80 on my GTX 780, though.

I was really hoping idTech 6 would be a new start. There are so many things about idTech 5 which are problematic on PC... :/

Are there any physics or animation speed problems @ 60+?
Interesting how I had never heard of that before.
So yea, it won't happen basically. If they didn't think it was a priority when changing the version number from 5 to 6, then I really doubt it will ever happen. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

From that tweet it sounds like unlocked framerate was an afterthought.
How the mighty have fallen.
I seriously thought that when they added Sousa that these things would be more PC-friendly. Sigh....

Sad replies in here, bet the game will end up launch looking and running great. What a cynical bunch.

Looking great is subjective, but you have no idea how much it will improve when it comes to performance.

But the main thing people don't like is the locked 60fps. It's like they didn't hear the complaints about Id tech 5. Nothing cynical about that. It's shitty and should be called out.

The Dev said they are working on it, I mean he said it's not garuntee but still

Man, so much gloom. I still have hope. The game is gorgeous in motion and I'm positive it's going to be an excellent experience.

The only real issue I'm seeing is the cap at 60fps - but that won't actually impact me anyways, so I'm not THAT bothered personally. Still disappointing news for a PC game.

I will say this, 60hz lock or not, the controls are smooth as butter with the mouse-look in particular being some of the best I've felt in ages.

They just said up there on Twitter they're still working on it, it is cynical to doubt that.

I'm not one to notice anything above 60 FPS. I can appreciate that people want more but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Gonna be picking it up on PS4 at launch probably anyway, grab it on PC when it's cheaper.

>60FPS is only visible on high-refresh rate screens; of course you wouldn't notice it.

You notice input lag, so yea you can benefit from higher framerates without the refresh rate.

That's why CS GO pros run uncapped at 300fps.

My bad.

never said you couldn't. Do I WISH the game would have proper 144hz support? Hell yes, I spent $200 on that schmancy new ACER GN246HL and I want to see ALL 'does sexy frames, dammit!. Will it be the end of the WORLD? Not really. At least 60fps is "good enough" for PC gaming.

It's frustrating when the games I play from the last decade generally have better multi-GPU and high framerate support than a lot of the releases today. Its such a weird time for PC gaming when we have all these amazing things going on with the hardware side and nothing but console ports to put them to the test.

If they don't support high refresh rates, I have to seriously consider buying the PS4 version.

And people called me crazy when I said this in PC threads a year or so ago. Funny how thing's change and the truth about how development on PC is not so High an mighty. With that said should I be cancelling my PC preorder for the collectors edition?

Specs:
i5 2500k 4.2ghz
8gb ddr3 1333

MSI gtx 770 OC 2gb

That all depends; are you going to trust the people who say it plays just fine or are you going to cancel you preorder on account of what you perceive to be as (technical flaws)?

On a sidenote, did you preorder AFTER you played the alpha or did you just preorder because you could? Only reason I did was because I played and enjoyed the alpha and felt fully confident that "yes, this is something I want to pay $60 for."
