Doom review codes not getting sent out until launch day?

It had a 38% approval rating on Steam which puts it in the bottom 5% of all scores on the platform: http://steamspy.com/app/350470

Hard to say how many of those reviews are legit, though. When it's a free beta anyone can download, play for a minute, and then drop a negative review.

That game got a 79? O_O
Travesty.

Yeah, I feel like the reviews for TNO was part of the reason it was so under-the-radar at first. It did not really get the reputation it deserved until word-of-mouth months later.

Beta was terrible IMO. Campaign looks promising but this is not a good sign. I'm pretty sure the review code situation was brought up on the Bombcast as well.

Pretty confident based on what they've shown that the game will scratch the itch I have for a heavy action FPS. I quite enjoyed the MP beta, but Overwatch would take time away from it even if I thought it was the best ever.

Wouldn't view lack of reviews on day 1 as somehow indicative that the game is secretly trash.

Peeps shouldn't be worried anyway, cuz there's always IGN's "If I had to rate it now" stuff lol

I don't think this is a big deal. As always just wait until a bunch of reviews come in before freaking out. The live streams I've watched make the game look really fun. People put too much stock in game reviews IMO.

You know why? Because the campaign will get slammed. Take my word for it. It's nothing like the classic Dooms. But who buys first-person shooters for the campaigns right?

I don't know why you are saying this, but from what I saw this new DOOM is more akin to the classics than DOOM 3 ever was. Take this from someone who played the originals in the 90's and still make mods for the community ;)

The single player looks fun and different from a generation of same-y shooters, but it doesn't really look like Doom or Doom 2 to me, especially after seeing it streamed yesterday and reading impressions from early players.

We'll see though, at worst it should be a great arcade/arena shooter with a misleading title.

Still keeping my preorder. Campaign looked good to me and and SnapMap should be a lot of fun mess around with. I don't need other people's opinions to tell me what my opinion will be.

Agreed. This version looks more faithful than Doom 3 was to the originals. This is the Doom game I've been wanting.

I liked the game a lot too (mind I paid like $10-$15 for it), but clearly these throwback style FPS games aren't working so hot with reviewers given how most of them seem to score.

I have a hard time imagining Doom bucking the trend here.

Die hard PC fans who are probably pissed off the game has a Y axis are giving it low approval ratings on Steam? You don't say.

It could go either way really. I've liked what I've seen. But I've only played multiplayer (which I actually really liked).

It's an annoying trend some games are using to avoid pre launch reviews. I think the reviewer still has the ability to review other parts of the game and can make a disclosure that the multiplayer segments were unavailable.

Don't call it a review and just a preview of the game quality minus the multiplayer.

If it's like TNO, that's a good sign in my book. I know the pacing of TNO was weird to a lot of people, but to me it was successful from both a narrative and gameplay standpoint.

Well this helps my decision as to whether or not to pre-order to get the 10% PSN discount. I'll wait for reviews.

I think that mostly had to do with people being misogynists and not giving the game a chance. At first I was one of them but I went back and enjoyed it.

...Misogynists? I mean, I don't think you can even play as a woman in the game.

I think I meant to say people disliked it because it played like COD and Halo which is not true but it does take some ques from it

Well just FYI that word does not mean that, and is a hugely loaded word to be throwing around in this industry these days.

I'm passing on the game for now because UC4 comes out this week as well. Will probably pick it up on the cheap this summer. No pre-launch codes doesn't mean it'll be a bad game tho...

Wolfenstein: The New Order got a 79 on Metacritic, and I can't imagine this doing better than that given it's years later and doesn't look like it will be as good of a game to boot.

Wow...here I thought it did well in reviews. I personally loved the game and it's been the best fps I've played so far this gen.

I think he was trying to say myopic.

I didnt enjoy the beta, but I have some friends who i played destiny and divions with that loved it (they never played original doom).

I'm buying the game regardless. I'm a big Doom fan and even loved Doom 3. As long as that fast, frantic gameplay and satisfying weapon physics are intact I'll have a good time.

So far the impressions from early buyers is great and the video they showed off at the Nvidia event looked amazingly fast and bloody

I am interested in trying this game but this has big red flags all over it. Don't buy this day one or preorder it and then start bitching about it being broken or bad the day it comes out. I can see the steam reviews now.

Do people still buy games based upon some self-appointed gaming expert's personal opinion?

Off many? Yes. Not a lot of people have the time or money to buy every game that looks slightly interesting.

They're right much more often than they're wrong too.

Doesn't mean it'll be bad, though I've had my doubts since the reveal, just seemed to be a bit outdated, both artistically and gameplay-wise.

If it means anything, Shadow Warrior only got around 76% despite being a great FPS. These games just don't tend to review well for some reason.

I thought people liked the beta?

I didn't like it and I heard that some fans of games as Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament didn't like it either.

In my opinion Overwatch is more fun.

Were there any review codes for Battleborn? Couldn't find many reviews on launch day. I don't know if this is such a great idea to be thrifty with review codes.
