Dota 2 Beta Thread 3: Gunnar Optiks Required [Faster Loading]

Magnus and Earthshaker, such a crazy combo. We were doing poorly until a fight in mid where I (as Magnus) manage to pull in 3 heroes and ES just went in and double killed an AM and POTM. After that, we basically win all team fights with 2 blinks and so much AOE damage.

Two different skill sets.

Sniper requires good positioning, last hitting, farming ability (knowing when to balance farming and team fighting, also when to switch lane/farm jungle) and map awareness.

Pudge is more about mind games, with a little bit of map awareness and positioning.

When talking about roles, Sniper is much harder to play. Out of all the carries he's one of the few that has terrible health and no escape ability.

When talking about specific skill sets, Pudge is harder to master. It's easy to be successful with pudge, but its hard to master him compared to other gankers.

Out of the two, I would say its easier to be successful on pudge but harder to master. So sniper is harder to pick up, but his skill cap isn't as high as pudge.
 
Pudge seems like a lot of fun, but I feel like if you don't get your early kills, you will be useless later on. I played him once and we quickly lost, so I'm terrified to try again.

I also love the little pop up window that shows up in the highlights. It's like I'm watching Sportscenter!

I wonder how the highlights are chosen though. For example, that picture is a kill I got on BH. He came up from behind me, , I tele'd him, but he managed to be one hit away from killing me, but then CK came in, stunned him, beat them under the tower, and I killed him with my fade bolt as he was trying to escape. It was certainly cool, but it was really just a single kill, not sure how the game knew to feature that.

There's a way to look at the back end stuff, I'm guessing it looks at a certain % of health, starts recording there, if % health person gets the kill, then it is a highlight.

Some highlight I've seen where basically just Riki blink striking a dude and killing him. Just that.

There is also a bug with highlights.
If you have watched highlights in the same session, the game will randomly give those Highlight notices, but not for actual plays. It also ended up doing some fades to the Dota 2 logo in the middle of a match.
Restarted the game and everything was fine again and I don't think I saw those notices again.
Haven't tried repolicating the bug because it was annoying enough the first time.

I think they reworked the DotaTV system once and basically deleted all the replays you didn't save. So unless you downloaded it once before you can't watch it. Unless your first match was before they deleted all the old ones.

Now if only they would reset stats / remove them.
 
I had some dude on Something Awful come to the game fresh and post his first match looking for tips.

The highlight was a poor Venomancer that bought the Animal Courier but never actually activated it.

lol the SK was def my highlight from start to finish.

Like technoisteve said im going to watch my first game as well but I watched like 10000 vids, played a few private matches to practice last hitting and think i played veno so theres no way my performance could match a S&Y rush or any of them next level builds

im garbage so take this with a grain of salt.

Just play a round or 2 with bots and just jump in solo queue.
I was intimidated by the oh noes the horrible dota community but they match you with other brand new guys so if you have some lol experience (as long as its not masturbating on cam) you wont be the worse.

its reported...alot of people getting it and a mod (dont know if he carries weight) said it might be intentional.

Argument is (just a few comments) that ppl were checking before match and woulkd Disconnect on weak teams right at loading screen.

I'm scared after seeing how people say the game is so complex.

It's an impossible game to master, but it's not too hard to get the basis down. Start by playing matches against easy bots, and turn on auto-buy items in the options menu for a few games so that you have one less thing to worry about.

I never even played against bots.

One game solo to understand the controls -> read a guide about the hero you want to play -> straight into ruining other peoples games :)
