I've never heard of a cosmetic maker earning 'millions'. Some top earners supposedly bring in six figures.

I can understand the 75/25 split on cosmetics, since that is the lion's share of Valve's revenue, but I feel that tournaments and pennants should at least be 50/50, if not 75/25 in the organizer/team's favor.
Valve's Chet Faliszek: We talk a lot about that and of course you can make things in Steam Workshop. People laugh when I say that, but it’s like, people have earned six-figure incomes by doing that. We’ve given millions of dollars to people, so that’s a viable way to go about getting into the games industry.

I'm sure if people keep sending in items they can make millions. There must be a few that did.

Of the people I've talked to, even having 2 or 3 sort items in the game, they expect 10,000 or so a month from their items.

10k a month 2/3 items. So if you make a bunch more you can easily make millions sounds like.

I disagree. I think Valve is being generous by giving 25%, to be honest. They could take 100% and leave the organizers to promote themselves and take a cut from their Twitch TV donations, or wathever.

Basically my view point on the matter. It's literally free money that neither the TOs or teams would've seen in any other game/scene, and Valve does the majority (all) of the work for these features and implementing them, so taking %75 is probably on the lower side of what they should get tbh.

Most people who make cosmetics still make 10's of thousands and some even make millions, so it's fine. At least that's how it goes for TF2 items.

It really doesn't appear to be like that with dota, talking with other item creators they seem to be happy enough about profits but it's not anything crazy like it was in TF2. Also it seems it's just getting harder to actually make any money due to the huge amount of items already in game! Obviously once the game's public things will probably go back up.

I think with all the new players joining the Dota 2 party, GAF should consider making some master list of players by skill level. I've always had an unpleasant time playing with members of this board because many of you are very high-tier players while I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate at best.

Game is not out yet fully, and the whole item system is not a new thing anymore like it was with TF2. I also feel Dota 2's item are not as "fun" as the TF2 items, which is better. But I personally don't want the items as badly as the TF2 ones. Good there are no clown hats in Dota though lol.

Also a lot more heroes and the items that are there are in parts. Think it will still sell a lot when the game is out fully, dunno if it will reach TF2 levels but who knows. Diretide kinda gave a lot of free items out which might have put a small dip in it too.

Best tier:
1. SteveWinwood
Shit tier:
2. Everyone else.

So Nebula was talking about Valve's matchmaking system on Sing's channel. I don't know how much of this is common knowledge, but a few notes:

-Base ELO is 1600
-Minimum ELO is 900
-SingSing has an ELO of 4600
-ELO fluctuations are based upon the quality of opponents (re: if you lose to Na'Vi, you would lose 1 ELO, but if you lose to your actual skill level, you could lose 50 ELO)
-ELO inflation is there: re If you are of a lower skill level but get carried by higher level friends, you'll be placed in a much higher bracket than you can typically handle.
-Matches are typically based upon the best player (i.e. if Dendi is on your team and picks CM, you're gonna have a bad time)
-Valve is looking to hire a statistician to help improve the system and Bruno is interested in the job.

Yea they also talked about some other stuff, team matchmaking ladder is coming soon and is gonna be really good or something. And James and Nebula both gave a lot of feedback on how it should be a tourny style ladder so that if 1 team wins a lot of games and stops playing they can't be #1 forever etc.

Sounds good.

I wonder what 'People are vaguely aware wards are a good thing but don't want to be the one to fork the cash' ELO is.

Because that's where I am.

Sounds about right. I'll get my face smashed in by pub stars and friends or by tagged players, and get a pretty bad lose streak but my overall situation doesn't change that much.

Lose/Gain ELO based on the number of legs on your team?

Tried asking this earlier, but no one answered. Just need confirmation.

Is the game still considered in beta ?
If so, are all the stats and items going to be reset once it's released ?

The core game is pretty much fully fledged and done. It's in 'beta' insofar that they just need to finish bringing the heroes, game modes (WHERE IS ALL RANDOM VALVE) and tutorials into the game. That and getting enough servers.

Edit: And if they reset the items Valve's HQ would get burned to the ground within 24 hours.

Ergo,

Don't play with scrub friends unless you're okay with losing, because they'll be outclassed and will struggle against better opponents than they normally play.

How does one find out their current ELO? Is that possible?

Hahaha... They better not.

Stats maybe, but items definitely not since they've been taking money for them

Are you sure it matches to the highest level player? One of my friends goes into high and occasionally very high but when he plays with me and another friend we're always in normal games. It might just match according to the average.

No one wants to go full support in pubs.
Its why when dendi streams he usually buys wards for himself.

I'm pretty sure they won't reset anything. You can already pay for stuff, they won't take that stuff away.

Someone in the Dev forums said that game matches are based on ELO, and the High/Very High/Normal bracketing is done afterwards merely for replay purposes.

Is there any reason for Beastmaster's hawk and boar to have "durations" when the cooldown is less then even the lowest duration and the mana cost is essentially negligible?

I've seriously gotten nothing but rare's, along with 3 mythic drops in the past 24 hours. I feel like I shouldn't stop playing because I'm on a roll right now.

I think it's mainly to constrain the effectiveness of the hawk to the player's micro. It's a virtually free ward that engenders no risk to your person when you use it, so you have to at least keep it in motion to use it effectively (helped by the limited duration).

I recently found that I really enjoy Night Stalker. He never really clicked with me before (always did pretty badly when I played him a few months ago) but I played him again about a week ago and again tonight and man, he can really wreak havoc in the midgame. There was a Morphling on the enemy team who thought it was still 6.74 and went straight for E-Blade and then Manta which was awesome for me (nothing to block the silence, he always used Manta really early in the fight, so he couldn't use it to get rid of my silence either). He did get a lot of kills (20-9 in the end) but we ended up winning (Faceless Void farmed a lot better than him).

He's a lot of fun. I know aghs is popular on him but I love doing vanguard/bkb or armlet/basher.

The only reason I'm not playing him in diretide more often is because they bugged out his wings :(.

Just logged on and so if anyone wants red, yellow blue essences, find me on steam (Bacon of Hope) and I'll be giving em out till they're gone.
