Guide for working it with Dota 2

http://skyride.org/2012/11/the-complete-guide-to-streaming-dota-2-with-obs/

Only caveat is that you have to run the game in borderless windowed mode because OBS can't capture full screen games yet, but that's not really a problem.
although I don't have the power to stream. I still might try this.
Just for shits and giggles.

Ok, managed to finish just in time a second set for Brewmaster for the Polycount contest.
Would very much like to go back and tune up some items since I ran out of time. There were some discussions in another forum about what would be the best weapon for this set but there was no more time to design stuff, I went with the pipe wrench.

Crap :(
I am getting the same reactions about the wrench here as I did before. Some don't mind it but others hate it. Too late to change anything, it will go like this into the contest.
At least I got 2 submissions.

I can't find the curse of the cryptid set on workshop for beastmaster :(. The mystic druid set isn't done either but I did find the panda LD set. I think I upvoted nearly 60% of the submissions, so good. I hope both the authors put in their sets after the contest.

This contest has permanently raised the standards for the workshop.

That's good. If your items have lovers and haters, it makes them not only worth more, the people who love it, will buy it just to spite the ones who don't like it :D

@Des0lar: I agree with you, the best things in life are the ones which you either hate or love.
@Schweinehund: sometimes people forget to click on the character which the set is for when creating, so when you search using the filters it doesn't show up.
@bounchfx: I am uploading all the pics for each item in-game, will do the videos later. It is a shame so few actually post how it looks in the game and in motion.

Not really a fan, it only seems worth it if you have items that nobody will trade for on other sites.

So I made a post a week or so ago asking for advice on playing LoL before DOTA(with intentions of moving to DOTA) and the response was just dive right into DOTA. I am so very glad this was the advice I got as this game is amazing. I've always enjoyed reading about games(Why else would I first sign up to GAF?) so having a wealth of new content to read has been really awesome. It's so fun to finish up work then sit down and just play, trying to put the things I have been reading together. I only have two friends that play this which is a bit sad but when I get to play with them and we are on skype it's almost a whole new game. Successful teamwork is a very good feeling.

I have a long way to go, I have only played 8 games so far(I will admit I don't get very long to play, but lots of time during the day at work to read) but I look forward to it.

I seem to be doing quite well with Keeper Of The Light but I think that may just be because I don't have as much need to get right in the middle of the fight. My escaping etc isn't very good yet.

The only bad thing is I haven't played a single game of StarCraft 2 since installing this. Oops.

So I'm very new to DOTA2 and have somehow been placed into a low priority pool and gain no battle points. I left a game yesterday because it was almost an hour long with no end in sight and I had to go to work, but other than that I haven't done anything to deserve this..

Do they punish that easily? From leaving one game for a good reason?

How do I get out of it?

You'll get out of it eventually. Just don't do it again, or you'll be in it for longer the next time.

They do it because there is nothing more annoying than leavers.

Yeah, I didn't want to, but the game lasted far too long and I had to go to work.. otherwise I would have finished. I'm just surprised that it only took one game for that to happen. Seems a little stern.

Maybe the people in the game reported you too

Yeah they don't explain it very well to new players. It is kind of strict as well. If you have to be somewhere in an hour and a half I wouldn't recommend playing a game. Games can easily take an hour or more.

Only way to get out is to wait the hour or if you feel that it was not warranted, message a valve dev on the devforums.

:') This makes me so happy

I'm thinking your teammates might've reported you as well. I'm sure if I was in a game toiling for an hour and the game was in the balance and somebody just bailed I'd be pretty annoyed, but things like this can happen which is why I prefer to play with my friends because they'll understand at least.

I like everything but the wrench. A corkscrew would be better and more in character.

I abandoned a game once due to being AFK, however I didn't get put into low priority. Maybe they take the amount of games you've played into account or something, since I had played about 200 games before that abandon.

I like that Abandons: 0 stat and any time I'm thinking to myself that the enemy team is rudely dragging out a game that should already be over and it's 100% unwinnable, I remember that abandon stat and sit and take it

A corkscrew woulnd't work. Items need to be shaped within the boundaries and sizes of hit boxes, thats why the wrench is this big. At least pipe wrenchs this big exist, don't know about a corkscrew.

Giant corkscrews don't have to real for a talking drunken bear to have one. If not a corkscrew, maybe another alcohol related tool. A giant beer bottle opener?

Noob question alert:

Why is it that when I buy an item like heart of tarrasque, it gives me not that item, but two other items. i'm guessing it has something to do with recipes? but i'm not quite sure.

High level items are made up of lower items combined together. Heart is the reaver, health booster and recipe combined. The reaver and health booster have to be purchased at the secret shop and recipes are all purchased in the base shop.

If you just click to buy the heart, it can only give you the components available at the shop you are at, or the components you currently have enough money for.

So, I just got the Reaver and Vitality booster, does that mean i should have gotten the recipe as well at the base shop for it to become the heart? how does one see what these nice items have as components, in game?

Shift-click on the item and its components will be placed in your quick-buy bar

If you click the item in question (in the shop UI) a miniature tree with the components will appear. In some cases it'll also be able to be combined into another item or upgraded by buying an additional recipe (that will be shown as well).

You know what I think would of been good? A simple brass pipe.

Similiar note about Item constructions. I noticed that for some Items that can be purchased solely from base. If you have enough money and a single slot open it would allow you to buy that item. It will want you to drop items so it can fill two+ slots, then craft them an instance later. At which you can pick up your dropped items.

I noticed this a lot more in Diretide when they gave you all that gold at the end.

Gullin goes AM, has like 150 gpm because of his tough lane, goes AFK for 5 minutes or so before the 20 minute mark, comes back, finishes 32 minute bfury, puts feeding team on his back, gets his manta/heart and starts outcarrying Spec, pushes back enemy team from exposed ancient, wins game.
