Eh, it's okay, but isn't really necessary if you're just wanting something to go off of and adapt your items situationally. The recommended builds are usually a good guide in giving you something to go off of. I think it's best to start with those, and figure out what's wrong/right with them and change it if necessary.

Just got my 2nd abandon.

I am not proud of it.

Was all pick (first mistake)
Went mid as (random) Pudge against Axe.
Axe out laned me at the start, went down 1 kill. Was called a noob.
Had to buy courier cuz the rest of my team picked carries.
Was called a noob again, cuz I asked for help in my lane or to switch lanes.
Then it got worse.

I think I am done with all pick. When I say got "called noob" I mean every profane thing under the sun.

Cool beans, I'll be using those until I get a feel for the heroes. Going to try and focus on Shadow Demon for now.

To randoms, losing your lane is always gg, because no one loses lanes ever.

I would actually really like to see a 'No Pudge/Invoker' AP mode, because I'm sick of people who want to be Dendi ruining my games.

On another whiny note: playing on a team as a solo queuer with a 4 man premade is a hellish experience, because the leaps of logic they will go through to explain how their friend the 1-9 gondar has played 'perfect' and the loss is entirely your fault are amazing.

Pudge isn't as hard to counter as he looks. He can be shut down quite easily. He gets his farm from his successful ganks. How do you stop those? Wards. You have wards out, you can see him coming, and know when to stay by your creeps so he either won't try that hook, or will miss it. Everything he does hinges around his hook. If he misses it, he doesn't have much else, unless he's ridiculously fed.

Invoker though, a good Invoker is a pretty touch customer, you just have to figure out what build he's going (You can tell this by what orbs he has out) and focus on countering that. Is he going Wex Exort? Harass the fuck out of him, he won't have much in Quas to restore his health. A really Wex heavy build? He's probably trying to carry, so gank him frequently, as in make him public enemy #1. Quas heavy build? Probably going to gank a lot and initiate teamfights, especially if he's doing Quas/Wex. Anything you have to pull him out before the fight starts, use it.

Just mute randoms if they get annoying. I find muting them much better than them just yelling at you and not telling you anything useful. Remember, muting mutes text too.

I wasn't referring to good Pudge/Invoker players. I was referring to the majority of the players of those two heroes (the awful ones) who go mid, order everyone around and accomplish basically nothing for 40 minutes.

The pudges who have 200gpm hood/pipe up 45 minutes into the game that insist on hooking the enemy tidehunter into their team, but think they're doing an amazing job because the have the most kills on their team while ignoring that they also have the most deaths (often 1:1KDR) and that they just melt in teamfights and can't solokill anybody. At this point the best they hope to do is attempt to save teammates with hook, but they never do.

Or the invoker players who think they're incredible just because quas regen means you can't get forced out of lane and coldsnap wins pretty much any 1v1 engagement in the early game. So their mindset becomes 'fuck yeah won lane I Dendi. my team feed noob gg' while the entire time they're basically just a walking tornado/emp machine since that's the easiest combo to do while the enemy QoP (for example) is styling on our support heroes.

You know those times in dota where you push mid and take the rax, Even take the T4s. Then you're team for 15 minutes dies a bit, ursa never takes rosh the entire game and for some reason the team really wants to push bottom. When the other team has a PA, Lone Druid, Drow, Tiny and a lich ulti, that end up getting farmed....

Yeaaaa... Dota.

I actually thought i played QoP half decently that game. Half decent being pretty shit compared to average players. I barely play QoP and i'm never in mid, so it was a nerve racking learning experience. But that's why I keep playing this damn game.

Add Slardar to the list of heroes I absolutely cannot play. It seems most of the heroes I can't play are heroes that are primarily right-click melee heroes. Cannot play them for some goddamn reason.

Theyre deceptively complicated to play against good players.

lol Pillow against Merlini on stream right now as Drow

Perhaps it is because melee right click heroes are so easily kited and lend to lots of frustration. Their power can only be excercised with proper positioning really.

Slardar is one of my favorites. If you can farm up Armlet and Heart on him, gg. Not to mention his ult is extremely useful, especially for invisible heroes like Riki and Bounty. The only thing you have to worry about is not missing your stun like an idiot (which happens to me quite often).

That amazing feeling when you counterpick and it works out well (QoP for TA, level 1 Shadowstrike, bye bye Refraction). Stuntman also grabbed Sand King partially for the same reason, because of Sandstorm.

Also that Shadow Blade was just sitting in their fountain, and we were killing the other team in their fountain at the end, so I blinked in and picked it up. I was going to sell it but the game ended, but now I guess I can say I went Shadow Blade QoP now.

Every time TA tried to Meld out too was pretty funny. Dark Seer would Ion Shell someone, Sand King would Sandstorm, Dazzle would heal us while were all just standing there, and eventually TA was like "Fuck this shit I'm out of here." and tried to walk away, and we instantly all jumped on her.

That reminds me of something else I was unclear of. Can Scream of Pain hit invisible units? I know Sonic Wave can, but Scream of Pain has those little balls that actually deliver the damage, and you don't see those if someone is invisible. I know it's an AoE technically, but is it more like Necrolyte's Death Pulse or Mirana's Starfall, where it's individual projectiles that they have to be visible for, or is it just a straight up AoE?

But you do, it's really great against invisible units because it damages them AND it reveals their positions.

Shadow strike is actually not that great a DOT spell against TA refraction because it only ticks every 3 seconds. You can remove refraction charges faster with right-clicks on QoP. Thankfully shadow strike also has a slow that helps with that.

And scream of pain's little projectiles do seek out invisible units if they're caught in the AOE when you use it.

edit:
If the ta is any good she can just meld before the shadowstrike hits.

Right, there's that too, making shadow strike even worse against TA.

Axe eats every melee up. I had to lane mid as random Bloodseeker against axe. I already knew going in I was probably going to lose and I told the team that, no fucks were given.

There's absolutely nothing you can do. If you go in for last hits axe will right click you so he can helix off of your creeps, and if you don't go in you get the dot. The only thing that may be more frustrating is laning against sand king melee.

Like you said you can lane switch but pubs hate moving out of their comfort zone, even if it means losing.

Use the mute button. It cuts out their text and their pings as well (in case someone starts getting ping happy). Really, the only way to survive solo queue is to rely on mute.

As for being outlaned by Axe as Pudge - that's actually pretty easy. Axe is a surprisingly decent laner and Pudge isn't very strong mid. He relies on getting those hooks to win the lane but if your opponent knows what he's doing it's not too difficult to shut him down.

(And considering Pudge is in almost every game, most mid players will have some idea of how to play against him.)

Are you sure about the pings? Did they recently add that? I remember muting the tards and then having them ping spam me all game.

Could I get an invite to that steam group someone talked about a few days ago? Also if anyone wants to friend me go ahead, I'm looking for some teammates to replace the pubs. Steam id: divinerage002

oh man I had someone in a game recently who kept scribbling lines all over the map so that we couldn't see anything. Then he yelled at me because I wasn't in a team fight that I didn't know was happening because I couldn't see the map.

I don't know how people played this game before the report/ commend system. I don't argue with anybody when I play, just report them if they're an asshole or commend them if they aren't. Without that system I feel like I'd get into a ridiculous argument every game.

Read a few newbie guides and played my first game of this (co-op bot match). Got destroyed, obscenely frustrating.

Anyone know a good way to stop or greatly cut back on playing this?

I play it any chance I get and don't get around to other games.

It's the strategy aspect that makes it unique each game that keeps me playing it.

Got your ass beat and you're angry? Welcome to Dota.

You will get better by playing. I should really work on a newbie guide. I also read newbie guides when I first started, but found that they were still somewhat confusing when I first started playing. There's a lot of things experience players take for granted and thus forget a lot of newbie mistakes. Here are a few tips.

1. Don't die: A hilariously patronizing piece of advice, I know, but playing cautiously, especially early in the game, will ease up a lot of frustration and let your character grow quicker. In the beginning, stay behind the creep line (the dudes who walk up in the lane) to get experience. If you don't know where the enemy is, pull back. If you think someone maybe might be trying to sneak up on you, it's better to be safe than sorry.

2. Play with friends. Find someone who you tolerate and play a few games with them. Even if you lose, it will still be fun and you will learn a lot. Dota can be offputting when you join a team, things go wrong, and people start pointing fingers and saying what I assume are Russian curse words.

3. Have a plan and communicate with your team. Does someone need help? Do you need help? Should your team push our pull back? Dota is a team game, and more than one game has been lost by poor teamwork.

4. Don't pick a carry. When you select a hero, their card has their roles. It's best to stay away from carries as their effectiveness and fun doesn't show up until later in the game. I recommend these guys to start with: Lich, Shadow Shaman, Lion, Witch Doctor, Crystal Maiden. They have a lot of cool active moves that aren't overly complicated. Also a lot of them are fairly squishy, so you can practice being careful, and if you die no one cares because everyone expects someone like Maiden to die all the time.

Just keep at it and you'll get better. I hated Dota at first, was never good with RTS games, but now I love it. I am still fairly terrible, but manage to contribute to the team. Sometimes.

Long losing streaks do it for me. Since I solo pub about 80% of the time, I end up with these wild difficulty swings where I'll win 9 of 10, then watch as I lose 9 of the next 10. It's been frustratingly consistent like that. Losing streak goes long enough and I take a break to play Borderlands or something.

But yea Dota is one of those games that really monopolizes your game playing time in a way that other games just don't. It's pretty scary to look up at a clock and 4 hours have passed.

Thanks for the tips, it was helpful.

I actually initially understood the concepts in the guides pretty well e.g. not stepping over the creep line. I'm thinking I did make a bad character choice.

What was specifically frustrating to me was a bot playing as Sniper who could reliably kill me in one shot. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. I was staying relatively far back but If I encountered him, I'd die. Similarly it seemed the opposing heroes were faster than me, so I could not actually run away without them catching up and killing me.

The two most frustrating bots to fight against are Sniper and Zeus. They both have abilities that do massive damage at long range, and the bots have superhuman reflexes so that the moment you drop below their kill threshold you're dead

Well I just went back in and played a game as Crystal Maiden. I went 0-1 sadly but we had a solid win via my lane. So that was much more satisfying.

Sniper is easy to crush if you know how. And Zeus is food. The tanky str carries are much more dangerous, especially if they are fed.

0-1 as Crystal Maiden is very good. As a support, you mostly want assists. Basically you just have to be as much as an asshole to the opposing team as possible, without dying too much, and try to let your carry get the last hit in so he can feed.

Edit: Still looking for teammates and an invite to the Dota 2 neogaf group if it still exists.

Here is a play I was proud of, blinked and pulled the enemy team on top of the Kunnka ship:
