Back in the days of Dusa vs Drow, and zsmj and burning, no frost arrows was a common thing. In fact, iirc they skipped silence as well, just for more hp and dmg. Granted, this was during the golden era of trilanes, so the added slow and silence wasn't really necessary, but it was a thing when the metagame completely revolved around the endgame.
Back then I assume cold arrows didn't have their 60% slow which makes escape impossible.

Empire is running a Leshrac who maxed Stun and Lightning by 8. Anyone have insight into their logic? Is it because his Lightning is on a 6 second cooldown?

Shadow Demon burst combo. I've never liked it, but its been done that way for a long time. (Also possibly undying zombies will just absorb most of the damage of edict)

Ulti costs too much early game,

Lighting has a far better range and is a better nuke. Lighting is very good if you want to harras in lane a lot as well.

Slow is redundant in a tri-lane, your teammates will lock down people for you. That's the whole point. And it doesn't reach 60% until level 4, which is at least 7 levels, levels which you could've spent on damage.

Sometimes, it is possible to escape ganks. A 37% slow and 60% slow guarantee no escape and dps increases from aura after level 1 and stats are fairly minimal per level especially before ulti which once you get that you shouldn't be missing last hits anyways.

Edit: also forgot to mention the value of a level 1 silence.

That reminds me, I wonder if they will ever fix that Haste Rune. It is Double Speed in Dota 1, not max speed, and you can slow though it.

I'll go more lightning if I'm up against heroes that do dirty business to me when I'm up close or standing next to teammates and I know I won't be solo pushing towers.

Was there no max speed in Dota 1 then?

Technically, there was nothing that gave "Max Move Speed", but Dark Seer/Lycan got a 1000% speed buff, making it nearly impossibly to actually slow them. Those were supposed to be max move speed. Haste was simply Double Speed.

I just started playing two nights ago (and am absolutely loving it). I've only been setting up two-man games with a friend who started the same night, so we've been having bot partners against bots.

If we try to play against people, will we be matched up with similarly new people? I'd hate to join a public game and get run over.

I'm using Leshrac and really enjoying it. Can anyone recommend a solid teammate for him? The two of us plan to play together pretty often. Thanks!

Leshrac + Shadow Demon :D

Or pretty much anyone with a "reliable" stun or disable, to set up Leshrac's stun. Easy kills in lane that way.

Hm, these may seem crazy, but I've always found these laning partners result in an unstoppable force a lot of the times:

Crystal Maiden - You get full Edict damage and wonderful cc. The added mana regen is wonderful.
Sven - Same thing as above. Dominate your lane and then gank the others.
Keeper - Spammity spam spam.

I don't know if we're still recommending heroes to Oxigen_Waste, but coming from a new player, two strength heroes that I immediately took a liking to were Skeleton King and Slardar. Skeleton King is a pretty good fit for your "bruiser" role: he gets passive lifesteal and crit, and his ultimate gives him a free respawn every X minutes. He also has a nice ranged stun. I've only played Slardar once in a single draft match, but I liked him too. I'll definitely play him more, once I complete my quest to play every hero once. I also like Huskar, but everyone says he sucks. ;(

Last night I was unable to commit to a real match because I was waiting around for a phone call, so I ended up playing a ton of bot matches and turning on cheats to instalevel myself to 25 and get max gold. At first I did it just to fuck around, but then I realized that it was a really useful way to quickly try different heroes out. I just went straight down the alphabet (skipping heroes I've already played): Alchemist, Ancient Apparition, Axe, Bane, Batrider, Beastmaster, Bloodseeker, Bounty Hunter, and Brewmaster. I spent about 15 minutes on each hero, messing around with their abilities and trying out different builds — although they were a bit unrealistic since I had max gold. It was a good way to practice using active items, which I have struggled with. I kept buying Blink Daggers because I figured that's an important item to get comfortable using.

Of the heroes I tried last night, my favorites were Alchemist and Brewmaster. I definitely prefer strength heroes over agility heroes. I didn't really like Axe, though.

Tonight I'll continue, starting with Broodmother.

Well CM is the slowest hero at 280 move speed. If you double that, it's 560. So I guess the max movespeed thing just caps it at 522 anyways. Would be fun to see heroes move faster than that though.

Now, here is the thing, while she would have 560 move speed, she could be sloedw. Lets say Viper uses his Ult and Orb on her, at level 7. That would be an 80% slow. With the way WC3/Dota calculates buffs, this would make take CM from moving at 2x, to 1.2x, or down to 336, which while still faster then normal, but not max move speed.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Having a blast with this game. The steep learning curve is intimidating, but it makes it that much more exciting to play.

Watching astroboy's recorded streams. Dude listens to some music that is best described as sunny day Korea.

Man I decided to watch some of Sing's replays yesterday.

Shadowblade + Sange & Yasha on Anti-Mage. To the tune of like 28 kills. Storm with like 35 in another game.

And at the end of the day, it never really felt like his play was particularly good; he just had supports that knew how to fucking support, and everyone on the same page about what to do when the support does in for his stun/disable/whatever.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/12/11/dota-2-hits-new-high-with-180k-concurrent-players/
Dota 2′s popularity hit a new peak on Saturday when it passed the 180,000 concurrent players point. A glance at stats gathered from Steam using Steamgraph turns up a new high for Valve’s Dotalike, which has continued to gain popularity after a spike in September triggered by The International tournament. Dota 2′s peak figure is second only to Skyrim, which hit 287,411 players shortly after launch late last year.

And no, it’s still not out yet, but Valve are pushing out more and more invite tickets to current players. Valve have said that they’re rolling Dota 2 out slowly to stop their servers from melting into a plastic puddle, which seems sensible given the consistent player uptake over the past year.

It’s not just the expanding playerbase that makes Dota 2 one to watch, Valve’s decision to allow tournament organisers to charge for tickets seems to be taking off. The latest post on the Dota 2 blog highlights the success of The Defense 3 tourney, which has “has earned several times more in its first week than The Defense 1 did in its lifetime.”

Valve say that “while sponsors and ad revenue are useful sources for tournaments, they’re indirect – the funding doesn’t come from the tournament viewers themselves. We believe that long-term, for tournaments to be stable and grow year over year they need to be self-sustainable from direct revenue, and not at the mercy of changing attitudes in sponsoring companies.”

As the year draws to a close it’s interesting to try and guess which games will go nova next year. If Dota 2 continues to grow at this rate it could outstrip stern competition from League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth and Blizzard’s own long-teased version of Dota. We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, here’s that graph showing how the Dota 2 beta has grown since November 2011.

Crystal maiden needs a zero suit samus set..... Because of reasons

Never though about that, but I would like this too...

It would be nice if all of those CM sets posted in CyborgMatt's blog eventually made it in, they're good and she really needs some stuff.

I don't even play the hero, but the idea for this set is really really cool.

Heya guys, I'm a baddie trying to get better.
Gonna stream one game, testing the waters and stuff. Would be awesome if you guys could let me know how bad I am.

www.twitch.tv/bbcake

60 FPS, very nice.

Edit: Just one thing I'm noticing: Since Slardar is the only hero in the offlane, Naga should be fairly safe and you should be stacking and pulling the medium camp to both deny Slardar EXP and to get faster levels for Naga and yourself.

Edit2: Oh wait, you're doing that. Nevermind!

Edit3: Brilliance Aura is a one point wonder in my opinion. Your other abilities are much more powerful early game.

I am proud of my set but apparently no one else seems to like it lol. Profound sadness :(

Nah, your set is still badass. I like so many of the sets I've seen submitted to that contest, I really wish they could all make it in.

I like that Void set but it feels unfinished to me. Would have at least like to see a head slot for it.

Which hero?

Naga Siren, Enchantress, Crystal Maiden and Brewmaster.

(I may have missed another and for that I apologize.)

I said it before and I'll say it again - the polycount contest is like 90% items that are way better than the stuff we got now. I can't wait for most of them to get added.

Edit: That Venomancer Poison Storm set is amazing and probably the first set I'm really tempted to buy.
