I just learned that Mike Ross (of SF4 fame) plays DOTA 2 and has been playing for over 7 months now:

https://dotabuff.com/players/608203

That is him. I also heard that people on GAF played him. Is he any good? I would imagine he is at least decent at the game after playing it for 1000 hours.

I considered making a twitter account to ask him to join some GAF inhouse, but then concluded it wasn't worth the shame of having a twitter account.

I can ask for you if you want.

I have a twitter account from when nome pimped his new (now old) twitter.

You're free to use the @clankesh twitter.

Also: Played least played with 2 friends for the first time today. We picked kotl/pl/ta.
Get fucked, nerds.

What's this MMR thing about?

Match Making Rating.

It's basically how good the system thinks you are. It will match up with with what it thinks you should play and then adjust your rating according to the outcome. You beat people the system says you should lose to your rating will go higher. You lose to people you should win against you go lower. Those are the basics. It's more or less hidden in dota 2, but it's front and center in something like starcraft 2 where you have all these tiers where you can be gold or diamond or masters etc.

So Dotabuff has a number it thinks is representative of where you fall in their own system from all the data they have and they will unveil it and they have a poll on whether that should be private or whether it should be surfaced to everyone. The pro of it being public is you can get a lot more information and data from that just looking at players and whatnot, it would help ih's here for instance for balancing immensely. The con of course is that you'll start up a game and someone will look yours up and instantly allchat to the other team "gg our storm spirit is in bronze class we lose".

So my friend wants to play puck. What are some things that I should tell him about him because I have no clue.

Puck is one of my favorite heroes.

Phase Shift at level 1, unless you have some extremely weird situation, there's no way it won't be useful at level 1. If something bad happens and you need to dodge something big, BOOP! Pop that Phase Shift at the right time and you're good. Just leave it at 1 until later. Max Orb, grabbing a point in Waning Rift at 4. You could also argue for maxing Silence too, but it's really up to you. Grab Dream Coil whenever possible.

You go mid, you get those fast levels, and you gank. Ganking with Puck is ridiculous and most of the time gets you a kill. Generally don't start ganking until 6. If you've been harassing your mid opponent enough though, and think you have a chance, you could use your first Dream Coil to kill them. Very hard thing to get away from if they're pretty squishy.

As for items, Bottle if you're mid, and Power Treads or Phase Boots as your boots. Arcane Boots if you're not mid. Get one Bracer, and a Blink Dagger is your most important item. You can turn the Bracer into Drums later, which is pretty useful. After that, you have some options. Bloodstone is good in general, but I don't usually go that route. I usually go Linken's or Scythe, depending on the other team.

Now here's the cool thing about Puck: You can walk out of DAMN NEAR ANYTHING alive! All you have to do is time your Phase Shift right. Once you have Phase Shift maxed, the duration is longer than three seconds, which is the cooldown for Blink Dagger if you get damaged by a hero. You can pop the Phase Shift and Blink away as soon as it's ready! Mass AoE teamfight? Cast your spells, Phase Shift and get out of there. Sven wants to throw his Stormbolt at you? BOOP! You can completely dodge that shit and it hits nobody. You can dodge anything with Phase Shift, because Phase Shift basically makes it where you don't exist. Any debuffs you have on you don't apply during it. Sniper ults? Pfft. Last Word? Just watch the debuff, and when it's just about up, Phase Shift and you completely negate it.

So my friend wants to play puck. What are some things that I should tell him about him because I have no clue.

Thing about puck is you can use Phase Shift to survive almost everything. First, to avoid stuns and spells, even tower hits or normal attacks. Second, by throwing the orb, hide, and then blink to the orb, and third, when you have Blink dagger, max PS will let you wait for the cooldown so you can blink out of death situations.

Also her(his?) damage is really crappy, so you have to harass the other hero a lot before jumping in, and use coil to use your creeps / tower to deal the extra damage. In teamfights you are really useful, but don't try to do the full combo by jumping into 5 heroes, just survive and try to use your skills as many times as possible while being annoying and hard to kill :D

About items apart from bottle and blink, the rest is very situational, in my opinion. Early stats will be probably required to last hit, at least I do, usually null talisman.

edit: Agree with everything Hylian sed

I just went up against a Puck as Pudge that knew what it was doing and Phase Shifted my first hook. So then I had some fun with it: Faking hooks. Holy shit that does wonders!

Pucks base damage is actually really high now, I think in 6.76 they gave it like 10 more damage. Its somewhere in the higher 50's with a few gg branches. Puck can be a solid mid or a decent suicide laner if facing the right lane setup.

Playing some games with friends if anyone wants to watch - www.twitch.tv/spooed

Also.. god damn is phantom lancer hard to control now. I've been playing a lot against him recently, and hes damn hard to control even if you gank him in the early game. If the game goes late against him in my experience you're just done. Anyone have success with a counter carry for him?

Played my first game as Weaver today, got mid, ended up going 13-3-15. I think I will be playing Weaver again in the future.

Also has the actual-item drop rate seemed higher in the last week or so to anyone else? I got two non-level-up items in this last week, and before that I think I had gotten like...three in eight months

Not that I've noticed. I usually get 1 in between levels...maybe 2...

Is there any way to see the range of blinkdagger and Qop/ Anti-mage blink ability?
Not sure if this is the solution for you, but since QoP and AM max blink range is 1150, and blink dagger's is 1200, you can put dota_range_display 1200 in your auto exec and you can judge the 50 units off that.

Also Nyx and SD are so much fun to play.

Yeah i keep the range display up all the time now, also pretty sure 1200 is the experience range so I know exactly how close i have to be when trying to be defensive but get experience

Thanks guys. He did ok as puck the game he played him but could have done a lot better. He doesn't really listen to advice very well though lol.

This really bugs me too. Especially since there's a penalty if you blink too far with blink dagger. I don't know why they wouldn't show you the range. A balance issue? I don't really see how.

More or less along the same lines as before, could my build have been better here? Team was getting pushed around so much that I essentially had to join fights and pushes before I had my Manta finished, didn't seem like any of our lanes were going well (save mine). Waited to skill and was pleasantly surprised to see Pudge up against me, put my first point into Frost Arrows and made things really crappy for him, stole his runes, etc. A few deaths I definitely would have liked back that game.

My TA decided to buy a divine when we were winning, died and gave it to PL. I killed PL as Death Prophet, took it and proceeded to carry the game, pushing down the towers with ult while right clicking everyone dead. Still managed to lose it when all that was left in their base was their ancient, but I just charged in with my ult and won.

That's not to say my team didn't do anything, thank you for your billion assists Dirge and your early game carrying SF.
