Twice as likely to see an ult take you to a fountain? Always a good idea!
DotA or Steam? DotA seems to be working fine at the moment for me.

He's fine for pubs, he's one of those heroes you pick once in a while to have fun with. Don't expect to carry your team out of the dumpster with him.

Basically maxing bash first, first point in charge to use as an escape tool or first blood. I usually ignore his aura until last, typically you won't be 5 manning until after level 10 or so and his other skills are much better.
He's weak against teams that stick together early. He's best for ganking those that are alone. Pick him against teams that have low hp and minimal cc. If you can get a mask of madness before 10 mins you can easily snowball and dominate early-mid game. Like you said, you want to focus upgrading his movement speed. Tranquils + Mask should be enough to get you near max MS (522 ms).
He's great with other global gankers like prophet and wisp.

looks like you're getting the hang of her.
She really, really benefits from a setup. That is, someone that can hit the target with an easy stun or a slow to allow Lina to land her stun easily and get off her wombo combo. You can land it even without...but it's much more difficult as I assume you've discovered.
She's always good to pair with a Sven, CM, Veno, Lion, Sandking, Rubick, etc. for that reason.

What to do when playing against 2 players in your lane as a melee?
Short answer? Pick Kunkka or Dark Seer. Stout shield will also help you tank up damage since it always works on hero attacks.
The same reason Anti-Mage would get a Blink Dagger and/or Force Staff: to be totally ballin'.

Just set a new personal best for Kills and Hero Damage with Necrolyte, was so tanky and so flush with mana that I could eat Reverse Polarities and a buttload of assorted damage to begin a fight, team would dutifully pour in afterward and start laying into them, once they'd wasted so much on me. For a Europe West server, my ping didn't suffer at all (I'm USW mostly).
Dota sez Disruptor is now my best hero, love building Necronomicon on him to snag those juicy long-range Glimpses, deward, counter invis heroes, etc. Also handy when you've got a good catch in your Kinetic Field, nowhere to run from the Necro minions. Try it today!

Most people don't like Wisp (myself included) because the hero can do very little on its (her?) own and requires a decent teammate to really shine.

I don't really "counter" him (although stealing and immediately using his ult on him is a great way to shut down an otherwise deadly process) but sending Rubick charging across the map at targets never gets old
