I have a friend that is a hook magnet. My advice with pudge is that it's all about warding and position. If you're going mid against him, it pays to buy wards. He's actually an easy matchup @ mid given similar range of skill levels.

And if you get caught in a situation where he has a clear shot at you, start moving unpredictably, fake your movements different directions. He's going to have a hard time hooking that, and if he throws a hook and misses, you potentially have a chance to kill him.

Now if he's REALLY smart, he'll fake hooks at you (you do this by casting, and before he actually finishes the animation to throw the hook, hit S to stop it). I was going against a Puck as Pudge once who was actually pretty good, knew his shit. I would get shots for hooks, but fake it first to get him to blow his Phase Shift, then hook. It worked so well!

So for pro pudge players, when you throw the hook, do you click the ground closer to you? Or do you click near the opponent you're attempting to hook (or the spot where you think he'll be?)

In general for skillshots, I'd say clicking closer to the skill's maximum range is far more optimal. Keeps your eyes on your target (or where they'll be), and clicking near your hero is a really easy way to mess up your angles. I have a ton of trouble with Earthshaker when I try to plant a Fissure at my toes.

Probably the spot where you think he'll be, but it's whatever you can reach really. Helps so much if you have dota_disable_range_finder 0 though.

Random theorycraft time: Why has no one tried a Tinker + Venomancer lane? This could be potentially an extremely aggressive lane. Tinker maxes March, Veno maxes Gale. Gale + March, so much damage, slow keeps them under the march! Veno's other skill early could be Poison Sting for added fun, or if you want an early tower out of it you could grab wards. Tinker can get Laser as his second skill for right-click heavy opponents, or missiles for enemies that have escapes. Tinker would have farm priority, he should get a Soul Ring ASAP, then he's well on his way to BoTs. Venomancer should get Arcane Boots as soon as he can to keep his mana up as well.

Wouldn't the old Yurnero/Veno lane work much better than this?

Oh those are my favorite to hook. Uriah as my witness, I can say I made a Zeus ragequit when he tried to be smart. Once you get a handle at turn speed you've basically became a killing machine.

Forever my favorite ganker.

Anyone who wants to get better at Pudge just has to have confidence in themselves. His skillshot is the only thing you really have to learn, and it's not that difficult to land if you play Pudge often.

Edit: Have n0b and Milkman to thank. n0b for playing Pudge and getting me interested, and Milk for his tips.

See, I believed this for the longest time. Then high tier happened, and I got put in the dumpster.

Equally important to learning how to hook is learning how to play against people playing against pudge. It sounds odd, I know, but hear me out. When you play that hero in a high level game, the moment you go off of the map the other team either vanishes or sits behind towers, and when you engage in ganks you need to expect teleports. Warding will be extensive, they will do everything they can to deny you runes, and most importantly they will dogpile on you every moment they can. I took a lot of time off of pudge and these are the things that are tripping me up, just gotta grind my way through it. The two biggest things I can say is that you can't work alone as much and you need to be prepared to buy smokes.

Oh, and also laning. Yeah fuck mid lane, pudge loses to just about everything.

Don't worry about this really until you're high plat at least, until then happy hunting.

INSOMNIA

Very well said. Usually people I see struggle with Pudge are people who are new. So I'm trying to just nudge them a bit.

Once you're higher tier, then you run into problems. Wards, people scared of you going off the map, and rune control is tough when you're bullied out of a lane. Sucks once you pick him, then everyone has you on lockdown :(

Yeah but they fucked it up. Artists and direction is horrible on HoN, they mean well but they just can't pull it off. They have made non stop bad choices when it comes to art. It was ok at the beginning and has just gone downhill since.

Art direction is one reason why I've never even tried (or wanted to try) LoL. Looks FUGLY compared to Dota 2. Their health bars especially tick me off - they just look bad.

Having a lot of fun trying 2/3 new heroes each week - this week i'm having great fun with Bane and Lina. I've never played either before but they're both great fun. My matches have definitely been getting harder recently with the opponents almost always warding heavily now and last night went up against a team that were counter warding like crazy (something I hadn't come up against before).

I'm Cata (previously Cataclysm) in game btw, been sitting in the Neogaf channel but not talked much though I think I will need to watch for people playing matches when my friends aren't on. Had too many randoms throw a hissy fit over nothing at all.

I used to be a really good Pudge, but then I stopped playing him because you know, everybody plays him, it's getting kinda annoying. If I random him now I'm usually pretty bad. Really need to play him constantly I feel. At least for me.

I was watching it and I thought to myself those towers are fucking ugly, turns out they're new. Why?

On one of the latest episodes of Dota Insight, Cyborgmatt revealed that there is a Deathmatch mode comming to Dota.

Am I the only one who is kinda psyked about this. I can see that there might be some balance issues if it was single deathmatch, but I feel that Team Deathmatch could be absolutely fantastic in Dota.

Did he say deathmatch or death mode? Death mode is already in Dota 1 and means you have to repick after you die.

all random is so great. I'm getting out of playing the same 4-5 heroes every match and now discovered heroes I never would have tried before that I like a lot, like Slardard, Spectre and Brewmaster.

I tended to only play a small pool of supports since I got dota. All random has helped me get out of bad support habits and play a more carry position and seeing my score like 12-5-20 like I did yesterday in my second game ever as Spectre made me really happy (compared to 2-10-20 I'd do as a support). I never feel like I'm being terrible because everyone is out of their comfort zone and teams can be incredibly stacked.

One thing Dota 2 really needs though, is an in-game suggested leveling system like the suggested item system. In all random I find myself having no idea what to level.

Just played Batrider for the first time in a least played game. He's pretty fun, and we ended up rolling the other team. Would probably not do so well against more experienced opponents though - couple missed opportunities with the lasso, so I'd need to practice.

And what's the best combo when you lasso someone anyway? Are you supposed to have Firefly up already, or do that after you snag them? Obviously you want as much sticky napalm as possible.

Activate Firefly before Lasso and then drag them over the fire. Firefly lasts way longer than Lasso does, remember.

Whats the best hero to play as as a total noob who knows nothing about DOTA?

Ive only played 2 games, and both times i chose Faceless Void, using his stun to steal kills. The learning curve is very steep, especially when it comes to items

Im terrible at this game

His stun? ...you mean his ult?

Faceless void is one of the harder heroes, and 1 of the hardest carries. Not exactly a good beginner hero lol.

Just want to say I hate Meepo players. They either suck or are huge assholes.

Had a Meepo yesterday who took mid after our Silencer had already asked for it. Then before I even hit 6 on my Chen he decided he wanted the jungle and kicked me out. It was impossible to safely get any more farm for the remainder of the game for me. I managed to get a Mek at least, but Silencer was SOL. Meepo went 25-21 by trying to solo gank constantly only to get jumped by the rest of the team.

So fucking frustrating, we would have won if he didn't take such a disproportionate amount of farm and then amount to nothing for the rest of the game. I barely hit level 12.

I had a guy who randomed Meepo and knew he was awful at it, but he kept making everyone laugh that it was okay. He was pretty upfront about being terrible, and just kept typing "MEEEPPPOOO" when he died or killed a creep camp or something. Or "Why u kill maepoo :(" when he was killed.

I don't know, it was funnier in game and we didn't really care. It was all random, and you get meepo, it's kind of expected

Roleplaying as the heroes is always fun, wish some teams had more fun, but alas fun is outlawed in the world of Dota. Once BristleBOG is out I'm gonna play beastmaster and taunt him the whole game like how my W is better then his whole hero and how I'm gonna tame him and stuff.

I usually get into the spirit of things whenever I play Axe. Something fun about saying "AXED" in all-chat when I get a kill.

we were going to lose anyway, I randomed Outworld Devourer and had no idea what I was doing either. The other team was like Drow/Phantom Lancer/Silencer so there wasn't really even a chance.

Might as well have fun
