I would think the potential is lower in Dota2 than it was at TF2's peak for now but is growing fast. TF2 benefitted from a relatively small amount of cosmetic items to buy (they came out relatively slowly) and cosmetic drops were and are very rare so the income potential was high in favor of people that could get their creations into the game. Less competition from items, so to speak.

At present there are 464 hats and miscellaneous items in TF2 and that took 5 years+. There are already 503 in Dota2 and the store has only been open for 6 months. I would not be surprised to see it hit 1,000 by the Fall. This presents a unique scenario because the more items that become available, the less likely it is you will be able to complete a full set of anything in a reasonable time frame. Buying becomes the only realistic option. In TF2 you could wait a week or so and get any item via drop...but it has grown increasingly difficult in Dota2, and it will only grow more challenging. In that scenario, I expect that those skilled enough to make outstanding sets (like Anuxi) will be in the best position to get sales directly from the store. Also, the item creation process feels more transparent and community-generated than ever thanks to the direct integration of the Workshop into the Steam client. It makes it easier and more enjoyable to buy from the store because you know you're supporting someone in the community, like Anuxi. That said, item sets that don't look as amazing will find it increasingly difficult to generate money as they are outshined by the fancier sets. People will just take items from those sets as they drop or trade their duplicates in for them, rather than purchase them.

Also, Dota2's store items don't suffer the stigma of TF2 store items in that there is no crafting system in the game to drive down the value. In TF2 store-bought items were limited in what you could do with them, and them not being able to be used in the crafting system to make new items drove down their value. There is no such system in Dota2, however, so nobody cares so people happily buy, sell and trade store-bought sets and items. That's good for Dota2 and apparently a lesson learned from TF2.

Also the drop rate in Dota 2 is like ten times slower than TF2. If they were equivalent you'd essentially be getting an item every game of Dota.

Fuck fuck FUCK. I hate it when I try to carry and I'm forced to abandon lane farming because one of the other lanes is inept and keeps dying over and over to Lone Druid or something. And then everyone's like "dur you didn't get farm" and I'm like "because I had to try and save your dumb asses and stop them from getting so fed"

You can't fucking win. Either you get no farm, or the enemy gets fed.
I had to do that as Alchemist. Thankfully every time I ganked, we got a kill. In the end I carrried to victory!

Well it really depends on how much you play TF2, as there is a weekly cap of item drops at around 13, and it's highly unlikely any will be cosmetics. Worthless weapons and crates 90% of the time. Regardless yes, you'd have to play a LOT of Dota to get 13 item drops in a week. That's...6 levels of progress. That's a lot of play and a 100% battle booster. Where in TF2 you could just idle for all your drops.

Awful.

Wow lol. I've never seen anyone call gg with no rax down. mTw got stomped the fuck out.

It's happened plenty of times. When there is clearly no point in playing on you're just wasting time. That game was over and everybody knew it, so they call gg early and move on.

Wish we could do that in pubs :(

Wow. I love this game SO SO much. I got a few of my friends to play and really commit, and even though we are bad we are having SO MUCH FUN.

We finally feel confident enough to play pub matches vs bots. I've been playing Omni most of the time, and I can't believe how fun support is. I'm learning tons of nuance! When you see a Jugg rushing your carry and you pop your ultimate so that your guys go immune and just wreck the Jugg its the best feeling in the world. You have to be aware of the game, aware of your mana/cooldowns, have the proper split second timing, and work together. Its just so incredibly rewarding when it all goes down correctly.

Also, fuck them for getting me to spend $15 bucks on keys (its so free its $8000). I opened the rare Morphling helmet, is there a site or a thread here at neogaf where people setup DOTA item trades? (I know there is one for TF2 out there)

THANK YOU SO MUCH DOTA GAF. I NEVER EVER COULD HAVE LEARNED WITHOUT YOUR KINDNESS AND PATIENCE YOU ARE A WONDERFUL RESOURCE THAT HELPED BRING THIS GAME THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY INTO MY LIFE.

Man, I got two of those Gamescom headsets with Dota branding and holy fuck how did Valve approve this. The packaging isn't Dota themed at all as well as having no label or anything and the headset itself has a strap-on velcro bracket that has another velcro piece to attach the Dota 2 logo to. What the fuck.

So even half decent players rage quit. Just watched a match and the majority of players were level 25-27. 4 Dire members quit before the 30 minute mark. Fucking pathetic.

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come as I hate quitters. I'm still at level 1.

Jealous! Im trying to get my roommate to play but he's been hesitant. Says he doesn't want to get addicted like I am, even though all he plays is Dark Souls. I'll get him one of these days.

levels aren't indicative of player skill at all. I've seen players with 1000 games that play worse than my buddy with 50. The trench is all consuming I'm afraid. From my personal experience, you get a quitter maybe once every 30-50 games. I don't see them often, most of the time it's a ragequit where the other team is getting crushed so hard that it's obvious they are going to lose anyway.

Freakinchair is 62

tomat is like 85

Generally speaking RQ happens a lot less in higher levels unless you are in low priority. People even pause more often out of courtesy.

SingSing's new team's courier concept art.

Damnit, this is an actual team courier I'd have to get.

This is true. Had a game the other day where three members were obviously queuing together and each had 300ish wins. They were all awful and the worst members on the team.

Was meeru known for his Visage? If so, Meeru I loved your visage when we played.
Meeru likes visage.
Igniz also did meeru-esque mom sf builds.
Igniz was not meeru, he came on Mumble, he had a slight Indian accent and talked a lot. If that was him then give him an Oscar.

"Slight"? Dude's accent was THICK. No way it was meeru. I'd be impressed if meeru could actually pull off an accent like that.

When are we going to get a setting for mixing hero icons and coloured icons? I have the former to a good size, but I'd really prefer my team have the latter (so I can see where they all are at a glimpse).

Voice transmogrification software and a cheap accent?

Honestly, Igniz seemed like a real person. I'm still convinced that anyone that posts anything about 'winterymint' is meeru.
