Dragon Age: Inquisition | E3 2014 Coverage

BioWare just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Straight Male culture (I'm an expert), but hot chicks and waifus are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in non-Straight Male society where you can become successful by being a gay. If you screw someone over in Straight Male society, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Straight Male public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase DAI for any romance, nor will they purchase any of BioWare's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but BioWare has alienated an entire market with this move.

BioWare, publicly apologize and cancel all non-Straight romances or you can kiss your business goodbye.

It's even funnier when you remember this:

This makes me nervous. Has everyone already forgotten the White Isabella stuff?

They've already started with the promotional pictures.

It kills me that there are mods turning darkskinned characters white but none turning non-human ones human. Having sex with a darkskinned person is literally worse than fucking an alien.

What is going on here? Are the two females supposed to be two different characters? It looks like they took the first image and decided they wanted to make alterations (more than just skin tone), which is how the second was produced.

Yeah, they definitely thinned the lips and narrowed the nose to make the appearance more Anglo. They kept the eyes though, which are more Asian now that I see them against lighter skin. I knew Viv looked different/exotic somehow but couldn't pinpoint it. It's an interesting realization that my interpretation of race was preventing it from being obvious to me.

That's pretty terrible, though I guess I have mixed feelings with mods and it's hard for me to judge too harshly. The point of mods is that they're what the modder wants to see in their own personal playthrough of the game, and they don't affect how others enjoy the game.

There are a lot of mods that make me uncomfortable and that people would find objectionable - nude mods and harem mods, sex mods, mods that let you romance previously unromanceable characters and "change" their sexual orientation, etc. - and even some appearance mods with benign intentions that bring up issues with standards of beauty and race (notice how Vivienne's nose has been changed above). At the same time, I'm guilty of downloading and applying some of those same mods. The ones I find personally distasteful I ignore and don't download.

If it's just you playing your own personal copy of the game the way you want, who's going to stop you, and who's going to be hurt, if your Dorian happens to be blond? Now, if someone told Bioware that they should be changing the game everyone else plays to accommodate their tastes ("make Vivienne more white and hot so she's a better sex fantasy object for me!") then I'd tell them they should probably sit down and shut up. And seriously, let's get over this weird sense of entitlement that Bioware is responsible for creating traditionally "hot" female characters to fulfill straight male fantasies. As others have said, if you're not a fan of any of the romance options they've created you can download a mod (assuming the game is somewhat moddable) or just skip the game if that's the primary reason you're buying the game.

I dont get it. Who is that other Vivienne? Or is it the same and they just completely changed her out of nowhere? I like both of them tbh.

It's a "fan" Photoshop job on them to make them white instead of brown. That's it. The creator I'm assuming would rather Vivienne and Dorian be white instead of African and Indian in appearance.

Despite BioWare's efforts to make more diverse and interesting characters and games a subset of their fans would rather everyone be straight and white only.

I find the "companions aren't conventionally beautiful" line of posts to be more than a bit besides the point (if they are serious and not tongue-in-cheek). I mean, if you find the characters distasteful or their arcs not compelling, that'd be one thing. But in what way is it not a step forward that companions are designed with personality first and foremost in mind? If all the female companions were Hollywood model attractive, wouldn't BW be getting crucified for their shallowness?

She has many names. Most know her as "Sister Nightingale” or “the Left Hand of the Divine.” To the rare friend, she is Leliana. They say she found faith amid darkness, and that her devotion to the Maker is matched only by her devotion to Divine Justinia V, a woman who is both mentor and savior. Those who have earned her loyalty know her as a steadfast ally. But enemies of the Divine know to fear her, for she is the shadow behind the Sunburst Throne—the one who watches and waits, who strikes when her mark is most vulnerable and least suspecting.

The only one I wish still had long hair was Sera. I dug her Die Antwoord mullet look. I dig Viv's horns, though I hope we can still put the face paint on her that looked really badass, and Cassandra looks pretty good with short hair, though I think she would have looked slick with long hair done up in one of those headband hair braids instead of that weird dark crown she has now.
Endy I like how you think.

Damn I was hoping it was an actual re-touch they look better than the current models presented.

Diversity is one thing but when you alienate your main install (not subset or minority) who are not gay with little choices or variation, it leaves a lot to be desired. So far the straight menfolk only have one romancable option whereas lesbian/gay have several choices.

They do? So far the only 100% confirmed sexuality LIs are Dorian as gay and Sera as lesbian. Iron Bull has been hinted as bi, and Cullen and Cassandra are some form of LI. That's about it. I'm going to assume for everyone's sake that you weren't lumping Sera and Dorian into one "homosexual LI" group, as if a male gay LI and female gay LI count in the same group.

Also, as a straight male I would have no issue at all with having one romance option. The last BioWare game in which that happened? KotOR with Bastila. Quality is the goal, not quantity.

With that being said, BW has said Inquisition has more romances than either of the other DA games. The chances of straight men and women only getting one option are slim to none.

Lelianna Looks amazing.

I do hope they take anothe rlook at mod support. It's done wonders for Skyrim. Hell the only reason people are sitll tlaking about that game is because of the mods, and it probably sold wel lover 7 million copies on PC - again, almost certainly due to the modding community.

It would also be cool if they can work somehting out in order to bring over the best mods to console gamers who usually don't get that kind of stuff.

Make it happen Bioware!

Probably not the same people want both. One group wants diversity, the other wants fuckable hetero caucasian girl-next-door.

I can't express how much better the armor designs are in Inquisition than previous games. Such a massive improvement. The general artistic design is fantastic.

I personally can't wait to see what they do with the next dragon age considering it's not going to be held back by the previous gen consoles.

Hopefully they've learned there lesson with DA2 and won't try to pump out the sequel with a 1-year development cycle.

Don't think I ever met Liliana in DA:O when I played it last week.

Am I missing out?

Those screens look fantastic though.

Wish the lip syncing was better though. Hopefully Bioware will use a new facial animation rig for Mass Effect.

Leliana is in the tavern in Lothering, the first town where you meet Sten, you can't miss her if you enter the tavern since it automatically triggers a cutscene involving her, but you don't have to go to the tavern and you don't have to recruit her if you do go in. As long as Lothering is still there you should be able to return and recruit her. She's pretty decent companion.

It still bothers me how polygon starved this game is. I hope the PC version has an option for higher quality models or tesselation. Damn last gen consoles.

Lothering gets nuked pretty quickly once you progress a few story missions past that point...it might be too late.
