No it doesn't. Doesn't appeal to, sure. But to say it offends a majority of their players is bullshit, otherwise Bioware would have gone out of business years ago when this fictional majority stopped buying their games.
I'm a straight male and you know what I do about the homosexual content in RPGs? I ignore it, same as I'll do here and I'll romance Wizard Grace Jones and get on with enjoying the game experience I'm able to craft for myself. The exact same thing you and your "offended" friends can do too. They're not going to take your straight character, tie him to a chair and waggle a cock in front of his face until you press a button to turn him gay.
You can still play a completely heterosexual game and others can play a homosexual, bisexual or even asexual one. Stop being such a downright asshole about it.
Why would bioware go out of business because of this? They haven't pushed gay men on their mostly male gamers. I can assure you, if they make the game a gayfest of gaymen its over. Even this little bit of a gay character wont be an issue depending on how it is executed. I don't even know how or why he would be gay. For someone to be recognized as openly gay they have to present their sexuality to you in some way or other. He will have to make some comment or do something to stand out from the rest of the characters as "hey I'm in no way straight". If the extent of his actions in the game are "hey, i'm gay"... w/e. I have no idea why a character's sexuality needs to be a significant aspect of the game.
Don't call me an asshole, ash-ashhole. My issue was mainly with the guy using the homophobe word and how blase the writer was about it. Also with the wider issues around homosexuality etc etc. I am no stranger to this stuff and I ignore it as you do unless I think too hard.
You realize you just went on a full rant that is the epitome of "I'm not homophobic, but..." remarks that are completely and utterly homophobic and bigoted.
you have no idea what a phobia is. The situation annoys the crap out of me and the clear decay of morals in our society is concerning. But ultimately I am w/e about it because I dont obsess over it. Comments like homophobe, when someone simply finds something objectionable, annoy me. You'd have to start calling people kleptophobes, pedophilophobes etc if you want to maintain consistency. Its just a tool to make the other side look bad and it does nothing to make the person using the word look sensible and actually presents them as a bigot (-
Having or revealing an obstinate belief in the superiority of one's own opinions and a prejudiced intolerance of the opinions of others. <--- you are not immune to this just because your view is a minority view.). By immediately labeling people homophobic just because they hold views different from yours even if they are being reasonable about presenting those views and tolerate opposing views, actually puts you closer to bigoted than they are.
While I don't condone homophobia by any stretch, I disagree with you saying that religious people (such as Christians) hide behind the fact that they simply think homosexuality is gross. All of my experience with Christians who oppose gay relationships genuinely do believe it's condemned in the Bible and that God punishes it.
There are many reasons people reject it. I don't see grouping every single reason under "homophobia" as honest or helpful. The rampant use of the word is downright disgusting.
I have no issue with giving people option to be gay in a game without making a character gay by design. Otherwise it just seems like stepping on toes. Ultimately it will be a minor part of the game. I think its not just a gay character that starts all this noise but the whole baggage it brings with it. Like "why?"
If you equate homosexuality to thieves, zoophilia, and rapists, then, yeah, you are homophobic. Homosexuality harms no one.
Considering I was raised to view homosexuality as wrong, I know exactly how homophobes feel. They may hide behind religion, but the truth is they just think its gross. Its a pathetic reason and should not be considered valid.
Its a valid reason under some considerations. If you want to argue objective validity then meh. Eating manure is disgusting to a lot of people. Someone who loves it could take arguments similar to yours and pretend to have the moral high ground. They could engage in a social campaign to make manure eating acceptable norm and you would still object, you fecophobe you. Why do you not like the idea of your main character in Biowares next game being a fecophile? Stepping on toes unnecessarily.
