No subs yet?
Does it even matter?

It doesn't matter, the dialogue is pretty close to the movie outside of the few scenes I mentioned above... the only other big reveal I guess is Krillin/Gohan can't sense Goku's ki when he goes SSJB. They also couldn't follow Freeza and Goku's movements at one point.

Vegeta has a really awkward clapping scene where he congratulates Freeza on his resurrection and uh yeah... stuff.

...here's the part where I laugh at my innocent former self that foolishly hoped for animation on par with Madhouse's HxH before Super started.

HAHAHAHA what possibly gave you that idea?!

Good Lord, its friggin Dragon Ball. SURELY they must have a higher budget than this.

Horrible HORRIBLE animation aside, I'm still a bit confused about blue SSJ. Is it stronger than that God form from Battle of Gods? Is it the same level only without doing the handholding shit with five other Saiyans? Is it like 10k times base form?

According to the anime it surpasses SSJ God.

Wow. You know, at one point I remember joking that I'd watch new Dragonball even if it had the budget of a children's book, but I think I'll just dip out until the Universe 6 arc starts.

The previous 'red' form was essentially a very inexperienced god base-mode. However, Goku and Vegeta have trained and have learned to control and contain it within a new base-form. The white aura 'base' forms they're using is basically the 'red' god mode mastered. Goku right now without going blue is stronger then when he was red back in Battle of Gods.

Blue SSJ is basically turning regular Super Saiyan with God Ki. It's stronger.

Goku's do.

The blasts were clashing and being deflected by each other in all directions. Look at those blasts flying to the sides.

In this episode it's described as stronger than SSJ God, although by people who can't even feel its ki (Gohan and Kuririn),so you'll still get some people arguing otherwise, I guess.

Putting that aside, the transformation used by Goku here is stated by North Kai to be SSJ God activated by himself. And then there's Goku's explanation which is that it's "Super Saiyan used by a Saiyan that obtained the power of Super Saiyan God", which would imply that his base is actually comparable to Super Saiyan God now. There's also a comment from Freeza bout how it's a mouthful, which seems to be foreshadowing for the Super Saiyan Blue renaming later.

Why they even decided to animate the two movies into this series is still baffling.

There really is no point in watching Super right now imo. The movies have better animation and tell the story faster.

It's probably because they needed something to take Kai's timeslot, but the Universe 6 stuff wasn't ready yet. And they didn't go with a non-Toriyama story since the whole marketing is focused on how he's behind the new stories.

Money? Merchandising?

They could still merchandise with new content. I mean, what money did they save by redoing the movies? All of the animation is redone.

Id argue that new content would have made the show more popular. Aren't the numbers kinda abysmal compared to One Piece?

Yeah ratings are pretty bad...

Well, it airs in the lead in timeslot, so it's meant to have lower ratings.Super having higher ratings would be very unexpected.

Like I said above, I don't think the Universe 6 stuff would be ready by the time Super started airing. Toriyama had published a note mentioning how he was busy designing the new characters for the Universe 6 arc, and that was just one month before Super started airing.

They're not bad at all.

I mean everything is compared to One Piece. Dragon Ball Super might be bad compared to One Piece, but it's the second highest shonen that Toei has.

It's also far above Naruto.

Toei isn't spending any money on that shit so those ratings are more than enough for them.

That being said, the ratings were alright until last week, last week's ratings were abysmal, and all the other shows went up.

So that tells something.

Well DBZ was the most popular anime in the world for a while

Well DBZ was the most popular anime in the world for a while

Well it's a different era.

Internet, video on demand, One Piece being bigger in Japan than Dragon Ball ever was.

The fact that Dragon Ball had been off the air for 20 years. (Yeah Kai was there, but it didn't even adapt dragon ball and focused on Z, while Dragon Ball is the only thing that compares in quality with One Piece)

You can't expect Z phenomenon for Super.

Even worse is that Super's quality is shit and that they are retelling movies that every DBZ fans in japan has already seen... Add the horrendous censorship and lack of violence / blood and yeah.

This is doing exactly as much as they expected it to do. Higher quality would sadly not improve the ratings by much. They never had higher hopes.

It's pretty sad. They could have just kept making movies. Or re adapt Dragon Ball from Tome 1 and with decent budget.Instead of this horror.

We'll see with the new arc, it starts in january so at least they won't waste too much time on Freeza.

Only 3 more episodes.

It was never number 1 in weekly ratings for Japan, although it was closer to the top.

Remaking Dragonball would run into the same issue that Kai had. Without new characters and transformations the merchandising wasn't doing well in Japan, even though the ratings were considered good. We'd be likely getting a remake with Super-level animation at best.

This is embarrassing.

2015 and so much fail

They are still personalized suggestions based on what you like. For instance, mine don't show Naruto or movies. Just the words themselves, Super and another specifically for Super ep 5.

Same thing came up for me.

Let's just hope that they've been waiting to get serious post RoF.

And is Piccolo going to meet Piccolo Diamao in the other world and refuse and become awesome again? Make it happen.

A whole day and still not a single team or individual bothered throwing a subbed version up...Did they really all simultaneously give up hope? lol. From the gif above...Maybe.

Okay so here's some positives from this week's episode (note I am not trying to defend this garbage in any way):

Trunks and Goten get an extra scene! Dende and Popo still exist!
The music was pretty cool during Freeza and Goku's standoff.
Tien getting a dialogue scene where he seriously wonders if Vegeta is switching back to Freeza's side.
King Kai scene where he wonders what sort of training Goku has been doing with Whis and co.
Freeza throwing cheap beam shots at Bulma and Krillin... seriously, dude was just trolling at that point.
Jaco's ship catching on fire was decent comedy relief. He really wants to get away from Bulma.

I think the very beginning of the "fight" where they walk up to each other and stare and then do the "test of strength" was pretty cool, one of the only good things about the episode in my opinion. It was a really cool moment that made me think the episode was going to be great... and then it wasn't.

DragonTeam is working on their sub and it looks like it will be out tomorrow like usual. DragonTeam are the only subs you should even bother to watch anyways, all the speed subs are absolute shit.

That's honestly not as bad as you all are making it seem. Par for the course of an average Z/GT episode, tbqh.

At least no one looks severely disproportioned.

Naruto Shippuden, you mean. Naruto Part 1 was consistently great, and kicked DBZ's ass from a story POV. I've also never been a big fan of One Piece.

Unless you mean in terms of animation budget compared to Naruto right now or beating it in the ratings. Well no surprise, given Naruto's been a shell of its former self for years now.

I just really wish Yu Yu Hakusho came back. My favorite shonen fighter-style anime from that era, easily.

Have you even looked at the other pictures ? And Z/GT looked better on average.

Well duh, obviously I'm talking about Naruto right now, which is a piece of shit.

It's called Hunter X Hunter. And Naruto ripped it off a lot in part 1.

Something as big as Dragon Ball Z deserves better treatment.

Funimation would be better off hiring its own animation studio. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a team who give a shit about producing quality work.

Don't put Z and GT together. GT didn't suffer from characters being off model as much as Super, but it also didn't really have a single stand out battle through its entire run. The final episodes of Goku vs Beerus in Super already had scenes that surpass pretty much anything from GT.

Also, GT kept things on model, but it had a really weird character design style where the cast had really big heads and small chests (allowing the heads to be fairly detailed even when the characters weren't standing close to the forefront).

Who is going to give Funimation the permission and money to do that?

What the hell ?

1) I didn't start the Z/GT comparison, he did. I was answering to him.

2) HE said last episode was on par with the average Z/GT episode. (and no it's not, it's worse than anything in GT)
He didn't say "hey the entirety of Super, including back when it didn't suck entire monkey balls, sure is worse than the average Z and GT episode".

So care to explain that post ?

Who is going to give Funimation the permission and money to do that?

Toriyama puts his foot, dick slaps the president of Toei and declares that his creation will never be given such low quality treatment ever again.

Toriyama: anime? I just draw shit, get off my lawn.
