Dragon Ball Super |OT2| June 12: Judgment Day

So AT pretty much conned/forced SJ into finally aging up Goku cause they were scared about changing character designs.

I'm gonna blame Toei now for Trunks and Goten still being toddlers.

It's funny how so many things turned out the way they did cause AT kept trying to find more ways to save time with drawing.

From the midpoint onward, it became routine for the enemies to transform.

It all started with Freeza. I didn’t start out with any plans to have him transform of course, but midway through I thought it might be cool to make it look like a bluff and then have him transform for real. Probably at that point I also thought of giving him a sleek design in the end. I’m in the habit of giving characters progressively more complex and tough-looking forms, then finally making them really sleek. After all, it’s awful drawing them once they get all complex. (laughs) Complex guys are terrible when you have to draw them for weeks on end… Cell was a ton of work, with those darn spots of his. (laughs)

But Super Saiyan 25 looks so cool

So they’re mainly there to provide exposition?

Yeah, like with Kibito I gave him a stern face, but it turns out he’s really nothing special. Pretty much all of my strong-looking guys turn out to be weak. I guess I like inverting expectations.

story of dragon ball

How did you feel as you were drawing the final portions of the series?

The Artificial Human and Cell story arc was pretty rough… I guess you could say I did all I could with Freeza, so I was burned out, and figured I couldn’t pull off a better battle than that. I thought, “Do I really have to keep going?” Even when Cell ended, it still didn’t feel like it could end. So before the Buu story arc began, I said “Once this next thing wraps up, I want to end it no matter what.” Because I thought there was no way for any stronger guys to pop up, or for Goku to get any stronger than he already was. So my starting point for the Buu arc was, “This is the end, so I’m going to draw whatever I want!” I always liked dumb gags, so I made things comical, with the Great Saiyaman and Gotenks and whatnot. It wasn’t until immediately before the final chapter that I thought up the ending. I needed something that would signal this truly was the end, so I jumped forward ten years… But I didn’t count on the series continuing in anime form11, so I bet it was really rough on everyone over at the anime company. (laughs)

When the kanzenban came out several years later, I added a bit more to the ending.10 I thought that somehow it just didn’t click. I wanted to make it more clear that Goku’s battles were over, and that a new generation was taking over.

Yeah Cell sucks. Also the last part makes me doubt we'll go beyond the Uub stuff. Or not who knows

I found cell saga was better than the frieza saga, but w/e.

Android/Cell saga is still my favorite. Loved the tension he brought as an initially mysterious presence and threat to Earth.

Sidenote, my copy of the Super History Book arrived... did they just... not include Goten on the back cover splash?

Cool interview. He really emphasized the fact that he wanted to "signal this truly was the end" of the original manga. Makes it sound like he doesn't want to continue beyond that. It will be interesting to see how Super will end. I still think it should've taken place after the original end though.

I was just about to post the same thing about vegeta leaving goku and sneaking into the corner.

Vegeta has been the man in super. Even if you don't like him in Z, he has changed a lot in super. Just a few things:

-Takes his family on an outing proving he is a better and more loving father and husband than goku.

-Swallows his pride to save the earth from beerus.

-Humbled himself more by taking a master in Whis.

-Catches and cradles goku after his beerus battle

-Helps gohan off the battlefield while goku left him exposed half-dead in the dirt to tend to piccolo

-Never stops working his ass off and training unlike some other scrub people dote over...

-When goku and freeza were dragging out a boring stare down match, he speaks what all the viewers were thinking by telling them to hurry the fuck up and quit bullshitting before he kills them both

-Saved Goku, got revenge by executing ginyu/togoma and sorbet

-Potentially stronger than goku at this point

-Has the motor skills to catch a fucking earring

Vegita for prez 2016.

Vegeta is the best character. He has had the most character development in the series by far, which is neat to see.

I thought at first he was the one on the middle of the bottom row. Weird they just didn't put him there.

Am I missing something? Goten is below Vegeta.

From Toriyama's Full Color Q & As :

Q4: Do modified-human types like Artificial Humans No. 17 and No. 18 get stronger if they train?
Since they’re human-based, of course they can become even stronger if they train.
In the case of modified-human types like No. 17 and No. 18, since they’re human-based they can become stronger if they train. By the way, though they don’t need to eat, they do need to hydrate. Also, their cells deteriorate slowly, so they age slowly too.

Oh I am READY for this baby.

Been waiting all my life.

I'm down a far deeper hole than Gohan fans.

17 come back. Make it happen.

And also what the hell are you on about ?

Goku is on the cover that's why he's not on the back...

It's of course Goten.

I think I see one of his spikes in Chi Chi's frame.

... that may also just be background...

I had to guess too since Goten's neck seems much bigger than Trunks'. he seems more ripped judging just from that picture

Oh, nice! Is it hardcover? I was thinking of picking up a copy.

Wtf that's a mini adult Goku

17 does need to come back though. Toriyama already says he visits 18 from time to time anyway.

Toriyama actually said he visited 18 "one time" and didn't talk about his family because he finds it embarrassing. I suppose this one time could always be during DB Super, though.

17 coming back would be nice. I dislike that he dropped off the face of the earth while still being more powerful than half of the Z Warriors.

Vegeta has been the man in super.

Man, no kidding. Vegeta's fuckin' ballin' all over the place. He's been the best for both comedy and badassery. He was kind of one-note for the most part in Z, but he's pretty fuckin' awesome now.

I feel like Vegeta's character has developed quite a bit lately while Goku's has stayed the same for a while.

Yeah no arguments here. Goku's been the same character basically ever since he grew up. Loves to fight, occasionally does the self-sacrifice thing once he realizes he's gotten too deep to handle shit, gets revived, still loves to fight, never learns his lesson with letting the bad guys live.

Although to be fair with that last point, Piccolo and Vegeta and Buu exist.

If I didn't just get done reading that chapter I wouldn't be able to tell that was Goten either.

I feel like they're emphasizing Goku's stupidity a little too much in Super. I mean, he's never been smart, but the only truly serious moment he's had so far is when Frieza destroyed Earth.

It's kind of the opposite of what the Z anime version did where he was more of a heroic type at times.

Funnily enough, they seem to have him more heroic in the Toei version compared to the movies where Toriyama had more involvement. One thing I remember is how Goku seemed more disappointed about how he got his power in BoG along with having more dialogue focused on saving Earth in the Toei version.

Toei was dealing with Luffy for too long that it spreads

even that bad Toriko adaptation had Toriko acting way more stupid/incompetent when he really isn't

I just marathon-ed this series a while back. One question...where is the blood?

And man do I miss that Kai score....stolen music or not.

The oddest thing is that the Kai flashbacks still have blood, but as soon as they go to the new footage, no blood.
