That doesn't mean he can't eventually turn awesome. Seeing Present Trunks at the same age as Future Trunks and contrasting their personalities would be really cool. I imagine him ending up as a bit like Vegeta was when he was younger and cockier. He definitely has battle potential, though, and it's not like he doesn't train on a regular basis.

It's always been my secret hope that humans actually have a transformation in another universe instead of saiyans. Clearly Universe 7 was the "Saiyan" universe, so I'm interested to learn more. There's TONS of possibility in DB's universe now that parallel uni's have been established.

It totally is the character's fault.

He did not fit as protagonist cause he doesn't really like fighting, which doesn't fit well with Dragon Ball or in fact any story Toriyama has written.

If you go read other stories by Toriyama they are all about people who like fighting and who enjoy adventuring, not people who like to stay at home and study hard.

Of course you can argue that Toriyama could change Gohan's personality, but that'd be just plain old bad writing.

All this training thing is doing is setting you up for further disappointment cause at the end of the day Goku will save the day.

I understand but there was something really compelling about the desperation of the z-fighters in the Vegeta/Frieza saga that is missing now. Now they are just trash and nothing is expected of them.

Piccolo should be a top tier fighter. He is a good character and Warrior Nameks were in the same league as Saiyans, with power levels of around 3,000 for some random Nameks and Nail outperforming even Vegeta from the Sayian Saga. Piccolo fusing with Nail boosted his power to that of around 2nd form Frieza and merely merging with Kami rocketed Piccolo to above even a trained SSJ Goku.

He should've been gaining similar power increases to that of the SSJ, but in the end it's questionable if he's even that much better than a Cell Jr.

Hopefully him and Gohan show what happens when you count someone out when you shouldn't.

Did they? That little skirmish they had wasn't really that much in Beerus's favor. Champa being overweight/out of shape looks more to be a character quirk than anything else.

Goku is not a traditional hero. He's not even a hero. Goku cares about two things above all else: food, and fighting. The Dub and even Original Anime made Goku more"heroic". Toriyama made it clear Goku isn't a hero.

Well even being weaker then Beerus would still make Champa a huge threat. Beerus is still leagues stronger then Goku and Vegeta. Champa would be a better match.

Their ki can't be sensed for some unexplained reason, but they're shown giving ki to the Genki Dama. The initial explanation is that they can't be sensed because they aren't alive and are just robots, but when they reveal that 17 and 18 are still mostly humans, they don't give any explanation for the lack of ki sensing.

But there was a positive response to that one-shot, so it led to Dragon Ball. However, it ended up as an adventure story, rather based around fights like in a kung-fu movie…
I liked adventure more, but it seemed at the time a road manga just wasn’t what people wanted. The setting changes with each chapter. At first I thought it’d be good to continue it for about a year, but it wasn’t very popular.

After that, due to the Tenka’ichi Budōkai the focus of the series shifted towards battles.
What happened was, it just kept getting less and less popular. Torishima-san was really on my case about it, saying “nobody likes it!” and mean stuff like that. (laughs) From the start I had thought in the back of my mind that since it was a shōnen manga it would be better received if I drew battles, but because I’m perverse I kept sticking with Journey to the West.9 But he really did keep nagging me.

So you shifted towards battles.
Well, I got tired of him going on and on about the popularity polls all the time. (laughs) Though I was reluctant to do it, the series’ popularity did indeed start to pick up around the Tenka’ichi Budōkai… And despite my reluctance, it still felt pretty good. (laughs)

Then after that, you returned to the adventure format with the Red Ribbon Army.
I tried to fight it. (laughs) I had Arale-chan make an appearance, and made things comical, and it felt like a struggle. But in the end, I couldn’t even satisfy myself, so I decided to bite the bullet and make it all about the fighting. Once that decision was out of the way, I felt a lot better.
