Oh man, if I knew how to make gifs I'd be flooding this thread with some Gohan sword action
and maybe some Goku shoryuken skills as well
I've always thought he should have used the sword as a power up instead of the Old Kai stuff happening. Something about an ancient sacred Excalibur-esque object only able to be wielded by a chosen one is really fitting for Gohan's character (and has nice parallels with Goku being able to use the Nimbus). It's also the only time that Gohan has had unique clothes and abilities. He was getting really good at using it before it broke, too.

All the women get "Chi-Chi" furious in combat and able to kick some ass. Then get motherized and become a worry wart half the time who stays home to protect the kids. See 18 for example even though she could slap Krillian around. Videl is getting closer and closer there.

Still, they made the clothes specifically for him and they were unique among the Z Fighters. I guess his Saiyaman outfit is a better example (and the most short lived - without the helmet it looked great)
When I was seven, I use to watch DBZ in secret and was always anxious at the thought of getting caught watching a show I was not suppose to. So I always had the remote in hand to change the channel just in case my parents would catch me. They never said I couldn't watch it, but in my mind I thought they would forbid it. My parents are pretty chill about these thing in general, so I was probably overreacting.
I grew up in the 80's where kids movies had boys wanting to see naked women and dead bodies. Violence itself was no biggie, grew up with Rambo, Die Hard, Terminator etc.
By the time we finally got DBZ the so called violence was laughable in my mind as a source of issue for some.

Things are kind of odd right now since (manga spoilers)
Goku is the first going to fight in the tournament. If he doesn't beat everyone by himself, it suggests that someone else will get the final battle, but I can't see that going to Monaka either, who's supposed to be the last fighter of team 7.
I guess there's a chance that Gohan could pop up at the end and
become the 5th fighter
maybe it's a hidden JoJo reference.
DB is becoming more like JoJo with the universe hopping and time rewinding stuff...

Cartoons have been treated as kid stuff for a long time. Once they were considered for adults like anything else but so long ago that changed in our part of the world while still being able to be targeted towards all ages elsewhere like Japan. If not for certain things in the second half of the century the attitudes towards cartoons in America/US and maybe other places would have been more akin to Japan.
Ah well, that's life eh

Having just seen episode 27 I'm disappointed that once again Vegeta was robbed and still couldn't beat the big bad guy. Even when he's easily powerful enough there has to be some reason for Goku to save the day at the last second. Sigh.

I never saw the big deal with it. Goku would have won if he didn't get lasered from behind. Vegeta had an easy win due to Freeza tiring himself out with the Goku fight.
The "win" wasn't really a "win" worth anything.

Vegeta was completely robbed no matter how people wanna hand wave it away. By letting goku take that win he learned absolutely nothing. Vegeta trashed him and was about to blow him away. You guys say he was weak but he was apparently strong enough to instantly blow up the earth
