Dragon Quest: Builders |OT| - "If you build it, they will come."

I have earth walls everywhere. Is there an easy way to change them all to a stone wall type, for example, or do I have to manually destroy and replace?

Once you get the ability to create stone walls or other types of walls, and you make your first set of them, you then learn the ability to create "cladding". The cladding, when used, turns earth blocks into whatever type of cladding you had. When you use it, it's like you are standing in the center of a 5x5x5 cube, and then all the blocks in your "cube" turn into whatever cladding you used. You can actually easily farm tons of blocks of a desired type by digging a hole into the ground, using 1 cladding, and then mine all the newly created blocks.

There should be a wall type that allows you to convert a section of wall to another material type. Same for floors.

Not sure what its called though.

Read the post above me they gave the correct answer.

Just finished the game. It was a huge amount of fun the whole way through.
I love all the connection to the original DQ trilogy. So, after the credits, is the builder still alive or is it just your descendant?

Also what do metal slimes give you if you manage to kill one?

A little late to the party. but I just finished the game as well.
This was definitely one of the best games for 2016.
With just some tweaks this game would easily be in the top 10 category for best games of 2016.

1. Better hitboxes for the enemies, many times your attack would just phase through them.
2. Higher "city levels" with written out perks. (level 1 = citizens can build sticks, level 10 = citizens can build orichalcum mallets.)
3. Make O (circle) the default "skip text" button. Don't know how many times I accidentally mashed X to skip a dialog just to start it right again.
4. Option to turn the music off (can only be set to low)
5. in-game button mapping (think this should be in any game tbh)

I highly recommend that people who haven't played the game pick it up, at least put it on their list and snipe it when its on sale.

Finished the demo for this last night, absolutely loved it, it feels very engaging yet so carefree and relaxing to play, will be buying a copy soon. Question: Have people been able to do things such as create sprite artwork using the blocks? Was kind of wondering if that's even really possible since it seems like blocks are kind of just constrained to the ground.

:O Sweeeeet. Are there any tips or guides for making sprites in the game or does it get a bit more flexible later when different tools and blocks are available?

No idea about guides you will have to check with google on that.

One thing that seems to be common though is that most of these are done in the free mode after people have beaten the game.

Agreed with everything you said, but it was probably my overall favorite game of 2016 and I'm playing it on the Vita (I'm near the end, in the middle of
chapter 4
. I have loved playing this game more than many games in a long time. Never gets old and just brings me a big fat smile while playing it. The difficulty is fair and is enough to feel slightly challenging, but not difficult enough to be rage-quit-inducing. The game looks simply gorgeous on the PS Vita and plays wonderfully. I'm amazed every time I play it how well done for the Vita the game is.

This game is so good. I'm almost at the point of rating it as the best game on Vita (it is at least up there with P4G and Gravity Rush though).

They are probably using the color blocks, which are available only in the free build mode. You can make blocks that are only of one color with no textures, and they are cheap to mass produce. The hard part is probably mapping out what blocks to use and building the scaffolds to help assemble an upright sprite.

Nah I believe that's an Asian release. Probably from Hong Kong

Ah ok, I'll be getting the PS4 version anyways but thought that was interesting.

Thanks for the info. I really enjoyed creating sprite art in Mario Maker so hope to at least dabble with it in this.

Which Chapter are the fancy beds in? I am trying to get one of the trophies for the 50 buildings and I need to build the guesthouse.

I always jump into this thread expecting to see pics of huge creations like in Minecraft. Can you not do large scale complex things like that in this game? I've been debating picking it up for months.

I need to check some prices and see who has it the cheapest right now.

You can but in story mode since you lose all of what you did when you move on to the next chapter its a lot of time wasted. So most people who do crazy creations do so in free build mode after completing the game due to everything being unlocked.

I only have 3 trophies left in the game to take.
And Im still having fun with the game.
Iv played some Terra Incognita, but I really lack any sort of direction/purpose here.
I dont want to just play it to be able to build giant city's that don't fill any purpose.

Any suggestions on what to try and accomplice here?
Complete all the gladiatorial challenges?
Build one of every room?
Reach max HP? (btw. what is the max HP you can have in the game?)
Build at least one of everything?

BTW. where do i find Basalt in any substantial quantity in terra incognita?

I need to figure out how to build that "elevator shaft" that uses that quick rise glitch.

EDIT: Figured it out. It looks funky, but it's a really functionally useful trick for going up to any height instantly.

Roughly 75% of the way through the third chapter playing on PS Vita and I've now got a corrupted save file after the game crashed on the initial loading screen.

I wanted to finish the game but I can't be arsed to replay two thirds of it to do so, obviously all the stuff I unlocked for Terra Incognita is gone as well. Sucks.

That is too bad. But you have more knowledge and might be able to get through it faster.

Damn that sucks. Any chance you have a cloud save available?

Nope. I tried rebuilding the database but no luck.

If/when I come back to it I'll go for the speedrun challenges I guess, but for now it's time for something fresh off the backlog pile.

Just completed the main quest. Fantastic game that I couldn't put down.

Things I want in a sequel:

1. Bigger towns. I blame the PS3, maybe Vita, but yikes the build areas were anemic.

2. Better handling of indoor areas so that building ceilings isn't counter-productive.

3. Quest log to keep track of side quests better, especially the ones you find in the field

4. Some way to see that you've completed a challenge without actually ending the chapter.

5. Let recipes accumulate, and have challenges that can only be completed by replaying an early chapter with late-game recipes.

6. Coop multiplayer in Terra Incognita mode

mattiewheels

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
7. Combat free mode

My god, does it get tedious.

I still can't believe they launched the game without this. Seems like the game could've been a hit had they just put in the effort.

They did the same for DQ Heroes but added it in the 2nd game. My guess is that they wanted to be sure to get as much of the main components / design with the game finished first. Then from there with all the feedback from the first game fix those issues and include a coop feature in the 2nd title.

Seems to have worked well for DQ Heroes from 1 to 2 with how much the game changed. (Know its a different dev house) but Id imagine they are going with the same general idea with how to progress with the new IP.

I had a difficult project at work when this was released and only started playing again last weekend. I'm on chapter 3 and the game is fantastic. My only real issue with it is the frame rate. I know Builders doesn't have any formal support for the PS4 Pro, but does boost mode make a big difference? I'm guessing it's a CPU bound game and the clock increase on the Pro is 30%.

What's the most lax way to level up at a reasonable pace? I was enjoying the game then got up to the part where they say "ok, do whatever you want to get up to Builder lvl 3!" I read online that people replaced their walls with stone, knocked all their rooms down/rebuilt and glitched the point system by stacking rooms on each other. None of that sounds fun to me.

Do you have iron or stone cladding? It easily transforms your dirt walls into iron or stone walls. Also, just put more shit in rooms. Like, make some pots or lights or decorations or furniture. Also nice flooring helps too. It's not supposed to be a challenge.

Didn't know about the cladding - thanks!

yeah, it turns all the dirt blocks within a 5x5x5 cube (with you as the center of the cube) into whatever cladding you created. It's actually the fastest way to farm any type of block because the amount of material you produce from 1 cladding far exceeds the amount it takes to make a new cladding.

It is actually really easy to level up your town for the most part. While dirt walls are worth zero points, stone walls give ten points per block. Just use some cladding to turn your earthen walls into brick or stone ones. Flooring adds up to. A flooring kit turns a five by five square of blocks you are standing above into a new floor type. A few cladding and flooring kits will quickly change a house from a valueless lump of earth into valuable real estate.

When building new structures, it is often easiest to prototype the structure with cheap earth or clay first, then convert it all into the final materials you want.

Thanks - just upgrading the floors leveled me up. I only play for about 20 mins a day so the idea of having to grind to level up my town put me off but that was definitely easy haha

gaf, what's the consensus on this one?
I've found it for 28..
I've got already PLENTY games to play, but I doubt it will drop below this amount so it might be a good time to buy it, if the games is decent... advice? :)

If it wasn't for Overwatch, it would have been my GOTY last year. It's got a fun story, addicting gameplay, and if you have a creative bone in your body then I immediately recommend it. If you ever played Dark Cloud and liked building the towns in that game, then it's an easy pick.

It is a fun game with a ton of replayability. I bought it at release, platinumed it, and still replay chapters on occasion. I say go for it.

Right up there with Uncharted 4 for the best games released last year.

I finally beat it!

I got this game the week it released and absolutely loved it. The whole town building angle is incredibly fun to get caught up in, and I found it to be a super refreshing take on what an RPG could be (which is to say, an RPG where the progression is all in your town and what you make).

Then, about halfway through Rimuldar I got far too busy, and between the holidays, the Switch launch, and a whole slew of other things to pre-occupy me I didn't really get a chance to try it again until this week.

And man, it still was just as fantastic as when I started it. All the way to the end credits this game is just a breath of fresh air. I'm super happy I could get a chance to get all the way through it, and here's hoping Square Enix goes in for round 2 sometime soon.

Also is the story mode long?

The game isn't particularly hard. How long it takes to clear the story mode ultimately comes down to how invested you are in building your towns in each chapter. If you just rush through each chapter, thry can go really fast. On the other hand, building a nice town each time is really rewarding.

This game is on sale for $35 bucks PS4. Remote play for the demo worked really good. Is the Vita version different from the PS4 version?
