Dragon Quest Swords NA website launches

http://na.square-enix.com/dqswords/

You can see the game's commercial when the site first loads up after you clear a slime hacking mini-game. It's cheesey, but not as terrible as Joker's.

The Story - You've probably seen this trailer before, it's a portion of a Japanese one you can find on youtube, only now there's english voice acting to it. Sounds DQVIII-ish.

There's no wallpapers or screenshots yet in the multimedia section but you can see a few screenshots in the Character section as well as the Locations sub-section of The World.

As of now there's nothing new to see if you've been following the game at all but at least Squenix finally rolled the site out.

I've been waiting for this for a long time (hard to resist buying a Japanese Wii, let me tell you). I'm glad it's almost here.

I actually stand a pretty damn good chance of being done with DQVII by the time this comes out! :D

Very much looking forward to this, especially after hearing about the apparently improved controls and added content in the U.S. version.

I wanted this initially but then read that the Japanese version only lasted about 4 hours. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

December 10, 2007 - Today Square Enix announced Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors will ship to retail in North America on February 26, 2008. The Wii exclusive invites gamers to mimic sword and shield play with the Wiimote. Your sword can be personalized by combining materials found in the game.

Released in Japan last July, the North American version of Dragon Quest Swords will include four hidden bosses and a new "Payback" mode.

:D Checking out now for the voice acting. I don't actually like Dragon Quest games but I'm planning to pick this up because it sounds like something I can get behind. Hopefully it makes it to PAL land!

Thanks, good to know that I didn't invent the extra content.

As for the improved controls, I guess that's something I heard from a friend that used to work at Square USA.

Is this game good? I didnt follow the Japanese release impressions.

I think it was sp0rsk who said it was like dragon quest punch out??

edit:

wow, the slashing thing was cool. I did different types and it actually did register.

Day one. I Already have it pre-ordered, I can't wait. Now if they confirm a US release for Chocobo Dungeon I am set.

Don't worry, it's been confirmed for a Summer 08 release here in PAL. I'm looking forward to it!

Ah, awesome, I hadn't heard about that! DQVIII seemed to drop in price pretty quick here so I was worried they'd be afraid to try this here.

I was hoping the video was the cool Japanese trailer instead of just a little clip with some woman talking over a mask :( I want to hear the characters - VIII had some pretty great VA I thought, so I hope this continues down that path.

Wow, I didn't think there would be this many people interested in Swords. There certainly wasn't in Joker. Hopefully the Sword thread will be a little more active than the Joker one was.

I've had my copy pre-ordered for a while as well. Can't wait.

Is it any good?

I am looking forward to this

Samurai Warriors Katana has me addicted to on-rails-slashing games lol

Its so odd... the Wii has me playing games I would never have played before, short pick-up-and-play type games have me hooked... (not casual, just the whole... Wii setup... Bwii for example, short levels but still massively fun)

Well Joker was fun and all, but there really wasnt much that you could do with it. Especially with the way the game's online was structured. But I will be getting Swords as soon as possible.

S-E damn well better bring DQ IV,V,VI and IX on the DS to North America.

Just tossing a few newish English screens in here. Game comes out Tuesday.

EGM was pretty harsh on it. 5s and 6s and such.

But it's EGM, lolz

Game Informer gave it a 7.75 (an 8 in the Second Opinion).

The review pretty much summed up what we've known about the game for a while, a pretty favorable article.

The main downsides I recall were that dungeon movement is limited (obviously, as you go forward/back between combat, except at forks in the road), that they wish Nunchuk control had been included in the US release, that the story is generally lackluster, and they also mentioned that some of the RPG elements may bog down "impatient gamers" (they mention a vintage feel in that department: having to talk to townspeople to determine your next path, old-school weapons/items menus, etc). The latter is something that probably isn't a downside at all, to most people interested in this game.

But as I said, they obviously thought favorably of it, thought combat is well-done with there being a mix of enemies you can just slash away to kill versus enemies that require strategy to defeat, better equipment is an incentive to revisit areas to get higher scores, said it's a game RPG fans and action fans will both enjoy, etc.

I heart Dragon Quest a lot, but I never do the spinoff games.

However, this one intrigues me. Sort of want.

I'm actually playing through DWVII right now, I might give this a whirl afterwards.

That actually looks pretty bad. Colonel Cutlass? Claymore? You can tell the developers are out of ideas with this milked series.

Agh, I thought Square Enix had moved past the arbitrary "localization" nonsense and started doing properly-translated stuff... just seeing the names and the dialogue kinda makes me want to barf.

It's the localization... I mean, the story wasn't going to set the world on fire or anything, but it was the translators being given too much leeway. I imagine Yuuji Horii is going to slap the team that translated this when all is said and done.

What's up with no official thread?

Anyways, just popped in to say that it looks like this is delayed in Canada until next week.

Amazon & Futureshop are both listing the 26th. At least it's only a week *cough No More Heroes* for French packaging.

I wish companies would start straight-up telling us our shit is coming out days/weeks/months later.

typical. at least i get a week to ponder whether this is going to be actually worth grabbing.

this game has apparently been crafted by taking everything i like about dq, throwing it all out except the aesthetic, and adding a possibly good, but possibly wonky combat system. i'm sure it's a substantial net loss, but it still tempts somehow...
