Dragon Quest XI screenshots and information

Now that Tales is PS4 only, i wonder if anything will change in regards to Bandai Namco giving them more time to take advantage of the platform...probably not? :(
Bamco is an el-Cheapo class publisher. I made a thread about that. The only in-house developer that gets the budget to strut his stuff is Harada.

no one should be expecting the ps4 version on the switch.

I expect a severely degraded PS4 version. Its not as if Switch can't run UE4 with the architecture it has, which is more modern than PS4's GPU.

And the ram capacity is surely big enough to store comparable world size too. I doubt DQ11 is pushing PS4 all that much

yea.....

Yeah it looks like X gameplay, also helps that Orca is one on the main developers in this too.

Does XI director did anything on X?

XI director (Uchikawa Takeshi, SQEN Division 6) is minor role staff from DQIX DQX (scenario), and go as major on Joker 2 and Joker 3.

I think the Switch should be able to run the PS4 version on lower settings. Less texture detail, a bit sparser vegetation, worse LOD and maybe lower resolution. The game world and characters do already look pretty simple. The limited size and limited openess of zones shouldn't be too taxing.

I'm always amazed with the 3ds version since they basically made two games with the bottom screen (2d) and the top screen (3d).

The enemy in the 2D version screenshot looks really familiar but I can't place which game I saw it in. Or is it new to DQXI?

They'll probably get nearly 3 years and a new engine to work with (theirs has gotten really behind the times and what little internal development for the PS4 there is at Bamco is mostly transitioning to UE4). At that point it's a matter of what they can put together by Winter 2018.

It would be crazy but I think the Switch version might be all three versions of the game if the Switch gimmick Nintendo is pushing for launch games is "Switching".

What do you mean? Isn't the whole game displayed in two kinds of way?

The beginning of the game is viewed with one screen showing the game in 3D and the other in 2D, but afterwards you have to select which one you want to see. But you can select the other one any time you want.

It's probably ps4 version for me. Haven't upgraded to new 3ds and I will expect that is a requirement to get any good performance out of the 3ds version.

Screens seem to confirm the opposite to me

In the battle shot you can see what I believe are battlefield boundaries, implying that there is free movement like in DQX

On top of the UI looking EXACTLY like DQX's, I think combat might end up being pretty similar. I just hope it's a little speedier than in that game.

Good. At least it's still turn-based.

yeah... still not feeling the ps4/switch version.
I'm not sure how else to put it... It just looks... bland/generic UE4-ish with some dragon quest characters in it.
definitely aiming for the 3ds version

Info. Still not listing Switch.

No only the start.

You got to chose at some point 2D look or 3D look. You can swap but I doubt on the fly.

Oh, that's interesting... Well, to be honest, I thought it was kind of a waste of resources to have the game always displayed in two ways anyway. ;)

Ishi Village

the place from which the protagonist sets off on his adventure, is a small, quiet village located in the corner of the valley area. Its people, who worship the spirits of the earth, live peacefully in the village. There are few shops and facilities, but it thrives in stock-farming and horses are often seen here. Those who reach the age of 16 must take part in a village tradition to climb “God’s Rock,” a rocky mountain in which the spirits of earth dwell, to offer their prayers.

—The waterfall turns into a stream in Ishi Village. It is a naturally abundant village overflowing with greenery.

PlayStation 4 Version
On PlayStation 4, flowers, every tree, flowing waterfalls, and monsters are vividly expressed in vast and beautiful fields. The lifestyles of people in the towns are also depicted at their highest.

3DS Version
On 3DS, you’ll see “3D Mode” on the top screen and “2D mode” on the bottom screen simultaneously at the start of your adventure. As you progress, you’ll be able to choose the appearance you’d like to continue playing with. By going to a specific place, you’ll be able to switch between 3D and 2D modes.

Theres abit more at the link

So possible sequel to one of the earlier games. Guess we've seen wife option 1 which is usually the one who doesn't treat hero as crap.

The PS4 version looks good, but I was surprised at how good the 3DS version looks. That'll look nice on Switch.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I hope they do it like those remaster games (if it comes on Switch) where you can toggle and switch between sprite and 3d.

Awesome screens. I love the outlines and yeah both versions look very good.

No info on the battle system for the PS4 version?

I hope this is the start of a new trilogy, now that they have a great and fast engine and many assets already done with XI, i guess they'd be able to put out a XII and a XIII much quicker.

The PS4 versions looks good but the 2D/3D aspect of the 3DS is just so charming, I really hope it isn't Japan-only.

And yet another DQ XI thread is drowning in the "3DS version or PS4 version or new version" debate.

Can we clear this up right now?

You think they're building the game world twice? Placing buildings, quests, NPCs, twice?
Rational approach: build the world, build the assets, scale the detail to fit the systems. Even if it's a different engine on 3DS. It's still a bunch of polygons and textures getting thrown around.

What is the origin of this "they could build another version for Switch" (or rather not because that would be a lot of work) idea? What are the differences between PS4 version and 3DS version, outside of detail and engine technicalities? Has anything been announced?

The crazy "we're building this specifically for one version" thing to me is the 2D version on the bottom screen. Puzzling to me that the 2D view even exists TBF. The top screen OTOH, placement of everything shown so far seems to match between the versions. It's the same game world. They just cut out a bunch of foliage and other details.

Reincarnation? Not "descendant"? Okay.

Oh God, then this girl who was born on the same day as him
could be Laura's reincarnation

and this
must be... a reborn Dragonlord? What a tweest. And at the end he's going to offer the hero the same choice as Loto's descendant. Ooh, what fun!

Or I'm totally off my rocker and there's no correlation between the first three principle characters and previously existing ones. Still, been a while since I've seen the "my mentor and best friend is really my rival and worst enemy" trope.

Interesting how development is done for this.

100% sure it would look worst on 3DS screen. I also dont understand why they couldn't choose DQ VIII character model example for the 3DS version.

The screenshots of the PS4 version look great. Might have to get this game when it comes out. I've never found myself all that interested in Dragon Quest, but I like the look of the world in this game.

Best version confirmed.

I don't really like the character designs in this game, especially the hero.

Look at this awesome group of people.

Character designs are pretty weak so far. It's good knowing you can switch between 2D and 3D later on, even though it's not a convenient quick switch.
