Dragon Quest XII as we know it has been scrapped; development now restarting from scratch

"If only you knew how bad things really are"

I'll quote myself from the other thread:
  • THANK GOD they dropped the edgy theme. This does look like DQ after all
  • The protag is ugly as fuck, looks like the adult Macaulay Culkin version of the Blue Dragon protagonist
  • The other party members also have some Blue Dragon aura but the lizard in armor is fucking genious
  • The zones look much bigger than XI and seem that traversal is much more fluid
  • The enemies position looks kinda weird for a tunr based RPG... I fear we're gonna get some real time element for combat in the field to say the least
  • Graphics looks like a Switch 2 game a mile away (nice for portability but horrible since SE is going to put it on a fucking GKC unless Nintendo distributes it🙏)
Also it seems they rebooted it some time ago since the showing was pretty substantial

People are taking the use of "they" as a gender thing, but I am getting a slight sense of the MC and the lizard dude either sharing a body or something else.

In any case, folks should remember DQ stories can still deal with mature subjects even without a darker color palette. Way too early to comment on where this game will end up.

The footage looks great. There are probably good reasons why the original was scrapped.

I'm in on day one and will go in media blackout from here on out.

The protagnist and the green lizard are 100% the same person. Green lizard is him in the Dream World most likely. Same haircut, sword, and undershit ripped on the right sleeve and long on the left.

CALLING IT NOW. Plot twist will be is the lizard form is the canonical real version. The human form looks sleepy because that is him in the dream world.

The use of "their" does not imply what you think it implies. You guys are literally looking for this shit now.

I don't know. I'm a DQ fan but I'm tired of the same formula over and over. I was looking forward to a bit of a different vibe.
DQ isn't about "different vibes."

Dragon Quest is about DQ vibes. A mainline game trying to go against those vibes will just kill it.

The environments look fine. MC looks like he is a teenage meth enjoyer.

And WTF was SE doing to botch this so badly?

Protagonist looks like Kristen Stewart after an all night bender. Maybe we get to store extra loot under those eye bags.

Hopefully the world is a little more exciting to explore this time then the dull PS2 one we got with the last game.

I bet this was going to be fully action RPG and that's why they decided to scrap it, because they realized the flack they were going to catch. That plus seeing the success of turn based games again, including the remasters. I'll gladly take an ugly ass haircut over what this was probably going to be 😂
I recall the game was supposed to be 'darker'.

The effects of Toriyama passing away is so evident. They don't look like DQ character designs at all.
I probably day 1 but just hope it isn't the baby mode mindset the most recent DQ remake was.

Not really interess in this game to be honest.

Those protagonists designs really looks a step down from DQ11. Some strange art decisions going on.

Thank God DQ Monster will also release.

The tone seems to be much closer to the other Dragon Quest games in comparison to the scrapped version.

That pineapple hair looks funny though

I know people are low on the MC design, but in my opinion, he looks like he could have come from that scrapped dark DQ XII version. He has sort of a rugged/brute look to him other than being a bit trim.
The irony is that people also hated the design of the DQ11 protagonist when they unveiled him (I vividly remember people saying Toriyama is lazy because the protagonist looks like Trunks. The protagonist looks like a girl, etc.). And it turned out to be okay.

People love to hate things, especially on GAF. I don't see anything woke here. And I understand (if I interpret Horii's hint correctly) that this design was what Toriyama delivered before he died (RIP). I have yet to play a mainline DQ game that wasn't good. And I trust Horii enough to do a good job with his supposedly last DQ game as well.
