Dragon Quest XII as we know it has been scrapped; development now restarting from scratch

So the situation was worse than most people imagined, the development hell required to scrap the whole idea they had...
The environments at least look good...but that main character design...an emo boy from the 90s with dark circles that hasn't slept for days?
Maybe there is a plot reason for that because it doesn't look good.

yum yum we love slop

ngl who would't want to fuck this lizard boy
furries be eating well
Least insane take lmao

Looks great , I don't see the mc complaints people are trying to push . My hairs been shaved on the sides since I was 14 or 30 years (sometimes long and tied back and times on the shorter side loose and wacky) so I can relate lol . DQ11 was amazing but the protagonist had no personality and was hella generic .

Also people act like games get perfectly envisioned and designed on a first try which is almost hardly ever the case , things are created by trial and error and sometimes a full reset is needed if things are obviously not working out . People just love to find anything to complain about .... unless it's Sony .... then it's justified lol

Even though the unveiling was pretty lackluster, I'm glad they finally showed something. As for the designs, the MC's hairstyle could definitely use some adjustments, the lizard-man character(or form?) is an abominable stain on art itself and what even is the red-head wearing? That aside, the worst offense is the fact that they showed absolutely no real gameplay after such a long wait. So this signals the game is definitely still a couple of years from completion. Hopefully the developers take some of the justified criticiism to heart and make some tweaks from now to release window.

So we went from a DQ11 protagonist with no personality and hella generic to an entire DQ12 game that looks like it has no personality and is hella generic.

Compare what they have shown here to the E3 Trailer and this video looks desperate to me.

Is it pretty? Yes, the environments, the rest is pretty disappointing, pans over empty towns and landscapes, void of anything at all, except towards the end with a single scene of a parade/event of sorts.

This video doesn't really ask us to ask questions like a good teaser would. It really just shows the MC running around for a bit, then a few quick action scenes - which look far less interesting and worse than the ones from the trailer 8 years ago for DQ11 linked above, and doesn't give us a single character that looks interesting to me. Sorry I don't like ugly characters, my loss. The entirety of DQ7 reimagined's chibi characters are a fucking eyesore to me, no thanks.

I hope they show something good about the game later on, but right now, it is so painfully obvious a rushed vertical slice with really nothing interesting in it at all.

And you know what else? What the last time I watched a video that asked me to trust them was? This reeks of FFXVI in that manner, the amount of trust they called upon for that game, and for not. What a mess of a game.

Well this is more like the first showing of that game since everything previous was scrapped so more like these:

Don't worry, hype trailers will come for this. Also, damn, the grass and foliage was really quite nice pre-S (but again nothing like in this). Everyone hated the character in XI too lol. For good reason. But the game was still good. Vocal ppl disliking the new guy's eyes or whatever bs doesn't mean shit.

The original idea was scrapped clearly because of FF XVI's tragic sales numbers. Who would've thought the westernization of Japanese games flopped commercially?

The original idea for IX was scrapped for the same reason as they time travelled back to fix it, but not far enough to not start it. They also forgot to tell the FFXIV folks to scrap the original and only make the overhauled version of the game that became successful and scrap all the bla Final Fantasies.

I've never really looked at DQ art, trailers, previews, ect to be anything worthwhile till I've actually played them . I'm personally not gonna get riled up because I'm not going into it with some sort of grandiose expectations especially over a 1 minute introductory trailer. I got just enough to be like " alright that's cool". I didn't know anything about DQxi till the reviews started rolling and after it released , looking at trailers and reviews didn't really impress me but I gave it a shot and is now one of my favorite games of all time and will always remember fondly so I'll reserve judgement till I play it . Some people acting like we just saw the Concord, AC Shadows , Highguard or Horizon H&G for the first time which is totally not the case lol

FF16 was alright .. not the greatest but I had fun and certainly better the FF13&15 , FF7 rebirth though was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had , I trust SE more then alot of other companies that's for sure , especially since they got rid of almost all of their western studios.

It's not, but it is ugly.
I'm also not the biggest fan of MC design, especially black spot around his eyes which feels like he hasn't slept for a month.

But I won't judge entire game just based on teaser especially the fact DQ series rarely disappoints.

Also we not gonna see this come out in until 2028 or something.

Weird the "tide you over" project that's likely to come out first while they keep deving this for aeons wasn't even shown at all outside the title (Monsters).

I was shocked a remake/remaster of a mainline title wasn't announced as a "tide you over" title. I honestly believe at least one exists. But they didn't announce one so maybe I'm wrong.

Well VII is still too new to undercut it I guess (hence trying to bring it back to public eye with the making of stuff).

Agreed on that for sure

So Square asks Toriyama for an edgy MC design for an edgy western-focused DQ12( ARPG?)

New edgy direction doesn't work internally, FFXVI flops and becomes a wakeup call.

DQ12 get's redesigned to be more traditional, but we are stuck with the original edgy character designs because Toriyama isnt around anymore to fix this.

Is this the lore?

That's fair. I just really don't like any of the character designs and even monster designs seem off.

I agree with you that the party members revealed so far have an "edgy" look to them and I wonder if they are from the scrapped version of 12

Yeah, I think I'm going at it as more of a VS thing, like /this/ is the game that's supposed to top DQ11? Yeah right! Not looking like this and with no story and no NPCs I even remotely think look interesting, compared to DQ11.

It's too much a competition right now, expectations are too high for what little is shown here, and I do need to just step back and trust. Hopefully they will pull off another miracle, and even if it doesn't top DQ11, if it's 75% of the way there that will still be a lot of fun.

It's got a long time to cook still though, as far as games go, I expect 2 mainline Final Fantasy (7 Part 3, and one more) games will release before DQ12.

For the love of God, please let us at least change the character's appearances like in DQXI. Honestly just have him look like this badass motherfucker and everything would be forgiven:

And yes, it's a little suspicious they didn't show gameplay which has me worried it'll be some FF7 Remake stuff where it's this half active/turn based combat. That said, I'm just glad we're getting more Dragon Quest that's goofy, whimsical, and silly instead of grimdark like they were initially going for.

I say 2028 if we're lucky. It might be even longer than that unfortunately if it took them this long for a minute trailer when the intial reveal was 5 years ago.

Especially if they've scrapped a lot of stuff and redid the entire story/themes from edgy to lighthearted. Maybe they even wanted the game to be active/turn based at first to fit the "mature" themes of the game but decided to go back to the roots of DQ with the combat as well and make it turn based only. Who knows?

Still want to see more and hopefully we don't have to wait fucking years for a big update this time lol.

I can't, just like you can't prove they aren't.
Assuming having a 3 decades+ work relationship with him is worth nothing and that the still existimg Toriyama studio is in on the conspiracy of wrongly crediting him, yeah theres no reason to think Horii isn't lying lmao

When they used non Toriyama artwork for the I, II and III they didn't attribute it to him for marketing sake.

Yea same I don't need no edgy bullshit in DQ, just love the whimsical nature of it and it's turn based gameplay. It just sucks that my balls will have probably dropped another 3 inches til it's out.

XII started when Sugiyama and Toriyama were alive. What a waste.
I'm not sure what the angle of your post is, but it's possible that the original DQ12 was going for a more realistic non-Toriyama art style and his sudden passing was one of the reasons why they scrapped it to return to the traditional art style.

In my opinion, it would have been extremely awkward and (not intentionally but perceptually) disrespectful to Toriyama's legacy if they released the first game in the mainline DQ series that scraps his legacy relatively shortly after his death.

On a different topic about the eyes. Yall are gonna look real dumb when in the game they gain mastery over the dream world and they "awaken" to their powers and they suddenly all have Goku and Vegeta eyes and not sleepy drowsy eyes. Bookmark it.

If y'all want to cry about shitty looking character designs, the Persona 6 designs have supposedly leaked. Now THAT is some shitty looking MC design.

Could always be a fake. In any case Persona character designs always go through a lot of iterations, so even if it's real those might look nothing like what they deliver in the end.

I hate how some of these newer Anime JRPG's from the big name studios look so Unreal-y. Seems very amateur in some places and reeks of "this is a tech demo".

China showing Japan how it's done in the past few years...

I do hope it's fake because I basically feel about these how this thread feels about DQ12's character designs.
