Thank you, very informative. I assumed having beaten the base game a couple of times I knew what I was doing. Turns out I'm completely clueless.
First time round I approached it like it was just more of the original game. Obviously that was a mistake on my part. When I re-bought it on PC I tried to make myself as OP as possible during the base game, in anticipation of the DLC, figuring I'd ready for it this time.
Nope.
Is there any other game that has a pawn system like DD? I have never seen anything like it. Kind of cool adopting another players character to join your squad. If I was having trouble I could hire one that was over leveled to make combat easier. I always kept my pawn in the best gear I could so other players would hire her. Then you could write a note or send a gift along with a pawn when you release them back to their creator. That whole gaming concept was a first for me.
People always praise (and rightfully so) the lore of the Souls games and how much thought From has put behind it in terms of item placement and its meaning in their worlds but Hideaki Itsuno and his team has also put a lot of hidden details that make Dragon's Dogma world feel even more "alive" and consistent.
For example i was blown away when i first saw this video by Gemmalady and made me respect Itsuno and his team even more:
The developers not only matched the stars of Gransys night sky to our own but they also matched some of them (in terms of symbolism and significance) with key locations that are below them in Dragon's Dogma's world. This is crazy especially since these are details almost no one would have been able to figure out unless he knew a lot about astronomy.
Exactly the opposite experience for me. The more i played the game and experimented with its systems the more i appreciated it.That first run through is magical. The second one not so much
Assasin and strider are the most OP and fun classes. You can mount and enemy and hit them in their weak spot for massive damage.I finished the game and I don't think the combat was particularly impressive either, some classes were fun (magic archer) but others were very boring (strider, assassin). What I liked the most about the game were the Berserk collaboration items and references. Maybe if I picked a less boring class I might remember the game more fondly.
It's an amazing game but the lack of easy fast travel killed it for me.
I don't have the time anymore, and boy, you'll be covering some ground around in this one.
Playing it right now on the Switch
Have you played it portable, and if so, does it look fine?
What's your #1 ARPG?I love RPGs, but I did NOT like Dragon’s Dogma. I fell for the hype from others and it just didn’t live up to it for me.
For anyone that played the game , went through many dozens of hours, would you not be willing to say it's simply one of the best game ever made?
As soon as you start the game, the intro is atmospheric, intense and immediately fun. The weight of the character, deep status information , lightning effects, outstanding music and dark fantasy action rpg instantaneously bring you in a immersive journey already. Then after the prologue you understand that you are in the very beginning of an absolutely unique adventure.
This game only merits more attention, but also a proper sequel worthy of its name. This game is an absolute masterpiece from all angle.
The game aimed for a Dungeons and Dragons feel where every time you left from your safe area/hub it wanted you to feel as if you were going on an adventure that you couldn't know how long it would take or what you would encounter. You had to really prepare and manage your items before you left and hope that you made the right choices in terms of skills, equipment and items. If the game had a convenient fast travel system from the get go it would then destroy that goal. The issue I have with this game is the fast traveling is horrible.
Hideaki Itsuno (Dragon's Dogma creator) had said in an interview that two of the projects he really wanted to do were Dragon's Dogma and Devil May Cry 5.And when he propesed these two projects at Capcom's president he gave him the greenlight to do first whichever he wanted. And although Itsuno has said many times that his favorite work in his career was Dragon's Dogma he choose DMC5 to do first because as he (very diplomatically) said "DMC fans had waited too long for the next installment in the series".I'm honestly kind of shocked this doesn't have a sequel already. Is this just up to the bureaucratic querks at Capcom? I'm aware there's an online only MMORPG version of this but only for the Japan market. Which also seems incredibly bizarre....
“So, when the discussion came up for Devil May Cry 5, I went to Kenzo [Kenzo Tsujimoto, Capcom founder] and I said… look, I want to make either Devil May Cry 5 or Dragon’s Dogma 2 next,” Itsuno told VG247 through a translator as part of a Devil May Cry 5 media tour. “He said ‘okay, do whatever you want. Do whichever one you want.’ So I thought, alright, y’know what… let’s do DMC5. So we did that.”
