Dusk Golem's List of Every Horror Game Ever (Details, Opinions, Videos, On-Going)

Dusk Golem

A 21st Century Rockefeller
Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

The bad ending is obtained by beating Wilson as the Stray Dog like a boss and defeating him. To get the true ending, hand him the gun. This leads to an epilogue chapter that explains a lot.

I don't remember, but I know I was able to explore the orphanage in detail before leaving.

Great list, I'm not a fan of horror games myself because I don't ever find them scary but I'll play them if the mechanics behind it are solid.

On my way to google you guys an example of this game, I found this article which has a great list for games to add.
http://www.relyonhorror.com/articles/17-obscure-horror-games-we-recommend/

So I checked out the above linked list, and found it formatted very similar to your thread you have started here. One of the games that caught my eye was SHADOW OF DESTINY / MEMORIES - specifically you mentioning that it got a PSP release in 2009, does anyone know if this is available on PSN?

Edit: Also going to look into Scratches (Directors Cut). Great list of obscure horror games, although I have heard of almost all of them aside from the two above. Might also look into how much a copy of Cursed Mountain goes for these days - as I finally now have a Wii (being my sons) to play it.

I love this thread, thanks OP :D oh, and please don't forget 'White Day', it made my blood boil http://unnamedgs0.blogspot.ie/p/whiteday.html

That link includes Extermination a highly underrated gem.

It's been awhile since I played it but I absolutely loved it a few years back when I played it.

I have a recommendation if you're willing to consider portable games: Theresia: Dear Emile for the DS. It's an adventure game (both 3D and prerendered 2D) with a mean streak, and despite its portable origins, it does an admirable job evoking a dark and disturbing tone. You (initially) play a young girl who wakes up in an abandoned dungeon deep underground with no memory of who she is or how she got there. You quickly discover that the dungeon is filled with painful booby traps and decomposing bodies, and as you escape your initial cell and explore the larger facility, you piece together the story of who you are and what you were doing here, and what happened in this horrible place before. There are no enemies, so the gameplay consists of exploring the environment, collecting items and solving puzzles. But the gorgeously detailed 2D locations, creepy sound, and hauntingly detailed text creates a dense atmosphere of foreboding and unease. It is not a pleasant place.

The localization, though badly in need of a copy editor, is evocative. Reading your character's descriptions of her injuries when she springs a trap is more whince-inducing than seeing it happen to a poorly rendered polygon. The story may be the most mature one I've ever seen in a video game--more than disturbing and violent, it's also uncomfortably sad. I can't really say more without spoiling, but it touches on very heavy themes of family, loss, and self-identity. Your character is put through quite a horrific situation, not just physically but emotionally as well.

Also of note, the game actually has two halves, each one playing as different characters in entirely different environments, but exploring different facets of the story and world at different time periods. It's kind of interesting to see how the characters interplay with each other's narratives, even though they never actually meet.

The gameplay is its weak spot: It has its fair share of pixel-hunting rooms and obtuse puzzles, and many puzzles are designed so you have to guess the correct thing to do (like pulling a lever left instead of right), but doing the wrong thing springs a trap (though health items are abundant). It can be tedious exploring the 3D corridors because the walking and turning speeds are rather slow, and the graphics in the 3D areas are pretty bad, even for the DS. But if you can stomach those flaws, it's an impressively compelling title.

I was looking this up today, since I loved it on the PS2, and I wanted to download it for my Vita. Unfortunately it doesn't appear to be on the US PSN store, but apparently the Japanese version has English subtitles, so you can create a Japanese PSN account and buy it.

Oh really? That is great to hear - I do already have a Japanese PSN account, but have never actually purchased anything. Also what difficulties would we run into trying to play it on the Vita? Isn't the Vita tied to a single PSN account?

I haven't tried to do it yet, as I'm still at work, but I was going to attempt to follow these instructions:
http://kotaku.com/5983578/how-to-play-japanese%20-vita-games-on-your-non+japanese-vita
Sounds like a pain, maybe more than I want to deal with...

Yeah I actually came across the same tutorial when I did a search, also not sure if I want to go thru the hassle. But something you might be able to answer - how much is the game on the Japenese PSN?
Based on an old post I found it was 3,500 yen, which is about $34? But it might be cheaper now...

Also, to keep this on topic, Dusk Golem, I can't wait for your Deadly Premonition update. I've been playing that for the first time recently and it's becoming one of my favorite games this generation...

Your post has me interested in finding a copy of Extermination. Are there any better places to find older games aside from eBay & Amazon? (since GameStop no longer carries PS2 games).

Yeah, $34 might be a bit too much for me. Considering picking up a copy for PS2, as it can be found for less than $10 - only problem with that is that it defeats my original purpose of looking for the game (to have something new & "horror-ish" to play on my Vita).

Soo I actually went ahead and picked up copies of both Extinction and Shadow of Destiny - PS2 versions. Complete in original case. Paid $5.52 (including shipping) for Extinction and $7.77 (including shipping) for Shadow of Destiny - looking forward to giving them a go, although I already have a few other PS2 games on the backlog - which include Clock Tower 3 & The Thing (which I'm surprised hasn't really been touched upon in this thread iirc).

For my searches those 2 really are the best ones to go to usually.
unless you have Local game stores in your area. Not to many places deal in retro games aside from those and like you said Gamestop has a bad tendency to just throw away cases.

Edit: See you already grabbed them. Good prices for them especially luck number 7.77
As for The Thing that's another one of my favorite though it does feel more action than most it still has some good atmosphere if you're willing to jump back in time for the time it released.

D2 is definitely worth playing, IMO it's one of the best horror games ever made. Completely different from the original. Also maybe Shadow Hearts would be a good candidate for the list.

Uh why aren't the Resident Evil games on this?

He said he'll be updating as he goes along, so I'm sure they'll end up there eventually. I more appreciate the obscure additions coming first. I doubt anyone coming into this doesn't already know what Resident Evil is.

Great thread although I'd like to inquire on what system's you felt Shattered Memories underdeveloped?

My experience with the game is that remained purposefully minimal. There was little item management, it was pretty linear, and it really emphasized the central themes/story through the imagery. Basically, we were very focused by the design and it stood out because it felt cohesive.

I agree that the 'gameplay' is minimal but this is part of its strength.

Looking forward to your thoughts on stuff like Kuon, Calling, Haunting Ground etc. :)

So I played Saya No Uta, and it was totally excellent. One of the most imaginative and interesting horror scenarios in recent memory, and truly chilling and disgusting in some places. Excellent stuff. A bit of a shame it had to have
porn bits, but at least they made sense in the context of the story, detailing just how devoted Fuminori and Saya are to each other.

Anyone got some recommendations for visual novels with similar themes? I love the genre as a means to tell a story but find that most of them tend to be based around the porn, which is a shame. Anyone played any other VNs that offer up some tasty soul-destroying horror?

Very awesome thread, OP. Subbed.

I have always wanted to try and get into horror games more often...This makes a really good reference list. Your descriptions of Dino Crisis and Killing Floor are spot on.

I'd say check out Phenomeno. Its theme is "Paranormal" instead of "fucked up". It's not really a long VN, you can finish it in one night (game is best played at night, which you should!). Oh and it's free, you just need to patch the translation in.

Awesome, I will do! Sounds great, and it's by Yoshitoshi Abe to boot? Sign me up.

I posted this elsewhere, earlier this month
I've made up a list of things I want to play this month, before Halloween:
  • Amnesia
  • Bully (Up to the Halloween section. How long will this take?)
  • Castlevania (Haven't decided which yet. I own about 10 different Castlevania games.)
  • Condemned: Criminal Origin
  • Costume Quest
  • Doom III
  • Ib
  • Killing Floor (Halloween games)
  • Lone Survivor
  • Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Silent Hill 2
  • System Shock 2
  • Team Fortress 2 (Halloween games)
  • Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines
  • The Walking Dead (Telltale)
  • Yume Nikki
(some of which I've beaten, some of which I've not even started. I don't plan to beat any of them, really. I'll just switch around each night I have some time to spare)

Thanks for your in-depth response, Dusk! I watched a few of your videos the other week, and decided to subscribe to this thread.

I've actually played some of these games a lot. I beat Resident Evil 4 for my third or forth time this year, and I was just playing a bit of the Ada stuff again this month. I also beat Costume Quest when it first came out.

The only games that I haven't played on the list are Doom III, Silent Hill 2, System Shock 2, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. Time is running out before Halloween! I've been busier than I thought I would, so games haven't been a priority, sadly. I also need to get to the Halloween section of Bully and replay some of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.. I have no idea when I'll be able to do all this... Perhaps the eve of Halloween is the only night I think I'll have time.

A lot of games still need to be added, and many played. ZombiU is one I haven't played yet, been spending these days before Halloween playing a lot of older horror games I've been meaning too. Heard good things on ZombiU though.

What have you been playing?
