E3 2013 | General Information and FAQ

Unconfirmed Member

Ah yes, it's that time again. A time of uncontrollable hype, unsustainable server loads and megaton announcements shaking the very foundation of the industry. It's E3! As the first major expo since the unveilings of the PS4 and Xbox One, E3 2013 promises a lot of exciting reveals for the new generation. If Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony can deliver on the premises they've sat up, we will have material to dig in for weeks, if not months. I've created this thread, just like last year, to provide a small guide on what press conferences to follow and when they happen as well as what's happening around the event and from where to gather press assets and more. I might provide some general summaries of announcements, but new threads for new news of course. And those we won't have a shortage of for quite a while.

The expo itself doesn't start until the 11th of June, but as early as 9:30AM PDT on June 10th will Microsoft start the press conference schedule when they will reveal games for the Xbox One. If we are to believe Microsoft, we are in for a treat as the console will get 15 exclusive titles in its first year. That should in turn pave way for quite a spectacular presentation. Later in the day, Microsoft is joined by Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and lastly Sony who will present their respective products. Needless to say, a lot of gamers have fixed their eyes on Sony's press conference as the PS4 console itself most likely will premiere there. And just like it's greatest competitor, Sony has promised a hot lineup of games. Fourty games are to be shown! Finally, Nintendo will in a special Nintendo Direct broadcast on the 11th of June, shortly before the doors to the expo open, reveal new games for the Wii U, including a new Super Mario title as well as new entries in the Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. series. The schedule's packed, and the hype is strong. Have a great E3!

Thanks again to Clipper for this handy schedule.

The different press conferences will be available on several sites, but GameTrailers/Spike has been named the official broadcasting partner of E3 2013 and has a busy schedule. More sources for live streams will be added soon.

Spike TV has been named the official broadcaster for the biggest event in video games, the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo. These are the questions I best think are suitable for NeoGAF, for both enthusiasts and attendees on a more general level.
The official FAQ is of course readily available as well here: http://www.e3expo.com/attendee/1798/faq/

If you want anything added to the FAQ, just gimme a shout.

First though, and this is important, a change regarding badge pickup:

Badge Information

New for 2013 - E3 attendee badges will NOT be mailed prior to the show. All Attendees must pick up their badge on site at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Confirmed registrants will receive a confirmation email with a bar code when their registration is finalized. Registrants should print the confirmation and bring it with them to the Los Angeles Convention Center where their barcode will be scanned and they will receive their printed badge and badge holder. Confirmation bar codes can also be scanned from attendee’s Smartphones. All attendees must present a valid government issued photo ID (driver’s license or passport) when picking up their badge/badge holder.

1. What exactly is E3?

E3 is the world's most prominent trade show for computer and video games and related products.
The show houses opportunity for game developers to show their latest projects, for retailers and distributors
to get together and for the press to get the biggest scoops.

The most exciting by far at E3 are the respective press conferences of the industry's top tier companies.
Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and Ubisoft each year host large briefings where they show new games and hardware.
It's here where new hardware, such as Wii U, is announced.

2. Is the show open to the public?

Nope, the show is not open to the general public. It's intended only for professionals from the industry.
Loopholes exist though and while often problematic, non-professionals are known to have entered.
But industry qualification is needed to gain access to E3, and those that cannot document their current professional
affiliation to the industry are not qualified. Though if you haven't got business at the show, you really shouldn't be there.
And besides, most of it is broadcasted (often live) by several news outlets, so it's hard to miss anyway.

Click here to view Industry Requirements.

3. When and where does E3 take place?

E3 2013, the actual expo, is scheduled to take place June 11-13, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Press conferences of Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and Ubisoft happen some days prior.
The Los Angeles Convention Center is located at the intersection of the Santa Monica and Harbor Freeways.

4. Where is on-site Registration located at the Los Angeles Convention Center and what are the hours of operation?

On-site Registration counters are located in the South Hall Lobby of the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Badge Pick-up counters are located outside of both the South and West Hall Lobbies.

On-site Registration Hours:

Sunday, June 9: 1:00PM - 6:00PM
Monday, June 10: 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Tuesday, June 11: 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Wednesday, June 12: 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Thursday, June 13: 8:00AM - 5:00PM

For questions about your registration, contact the E3 Registration Customer Service team at 877-216-6263.
For calls outside the U.S. dial 708-486-0718.

5. I work in the industry but I missed the April 29th deadline for free show floor admission. Can I still attend?

Yes. Registration will be available online and on-site at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) through show dates. The admission charge after April 29, 2013, is $995 for a three-day show floor pass.

5. What are the exhibit floor hours?

The exhibit floors will be open:

June 11: 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
June 12: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
June 13: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Same goes for Meeting Rooms, but they open one hour earlier on Wednesday and Thursday.

5. Who is exhibiting at E3?

Software and hardware developers, news outlets, financial agencies, government bodies and many more exhibit at E3. The focus is on software and hardware developers though, where Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony are the main attractions.

The exhibitor list is available in two versions:

Static version: http://e312.mapyourshow.com/5_0/exhibitor_results.cfm?type=alpha&alpha=@
Interactive version: http://www.mapyourshow.com/shows/index.cfm?Show_ID=E312

6. Does the Los Angeles Convention Center feature a parking lot?

Yes, it does. The LACC has 5500 parking spaces. The parking fee is $12 and does not include in and out privileges.
Should the parking lot be full, there are plenty of other parking lots nearby.

7. Is there any restaurant/café at the Los Angeles Convention Center?

The LACC has an excellent Food and Beverage Services Department by Aramark. I'm not sure on what menu will be available this year,
but you can browse the full menu offered here: http://www.lacclink.com/lacclink/documents/foodservices/CateringMenu.pdf

Restaurant outlets operating at the LACC are Compass Cafe, Galaxy Court, Trade Winds Cafe and Starbucks. Several concession stands, with seasonal menus, are also available.

Otherwise, Los Angeles features many restaurants to choose from. And with the variety of food, it'd be a shame if you didn't at least try one restaurant.
Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau has created an excellent guide of dining places. The link goes to restaurants in the Downtown area (closest to LACC):http://www.discoverlosangeles.com/b...wn%2FLA+Metro&searchtype=visitor&menu=visitor

8. What facilities are available for media on-site at E3 2013?

The E3 2013 Media Center, in Petree Hall, offers convenient support for journalists covering the show free of charge. It features a fully equipped, large working newsroom including:

  • Mac and PC computers
  • High-speed Internet access
  • Wi-Fi network access
  • Standard office equipment
  • Phones
  • Photocopy machine
  • A "news wall" featuring important exhibitor news and information
  • Media-only hospitality suite
  • Lockers
Media Center Hours:

Sunday, June 9: 1:00PM - 6:00PM
Monday, June 10: 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Tuesday, June 11: 8:00AM - 7:00PM
Wednesday, June 12: 8:00AM - 7:00PM
Thursday, June 13: 8:00AM - 6:00PM

During E3, we will be looking at tons of information from various sources. As there is a myriad of gaming websites, I will only link to the most notable (that are also known to attend E3 and report explicitly from the show). General media sites are also linked as many of them cover E3 as well.

Though prior to the list, I would like to take a moment to once again link to some press sites, this time to those of the big five (EA, Microsoft, Nintendo, Ubisoft and Sony). While mainly for journalists, some of these sites can be useful if you want to create an official thread for a certain game.

Microsoft provides press material in a very nice way. It's readily available for anyone as there is no password protection (except for some press releases),
and you can find anything from game covers in PSD format to logo files in vector format (EPS/AI mostly).

Xbox Media: http://news.xbox.com/media

This media page is new for this year, and is connected to the Xbox Wire blog.

Microsoft's Games Press: http://microsoft.gamespress.com/

Used by Microsoft UK mainly, but features assets for several regions. Much like Xbox Press Center, but with much more material.
Press releases are for some reason password protected, but everything else you can download freely. However, no Xbox One assets have been uploaded yet.

Microsoft News Center: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/

All things Microsoft! Here you can download assets not only for Xbox but for all of Microsoft.
Event photos (from E3), logos, press releases, product shots, video and much more.
No password needed.

The hub we will be looking at during E3 is Nintendo of America's media site: http://press.nintendo.com/loginSplash.jsp

While it is password protected, there is a guest pass available under the following:

Username: guest
Password: nintendo

A press kit for E3 2013 will be available, it currently has a placeholder page:

I will update the above once more details are made available. If you need a permanent login,
you can contact Golin Harris associate Deanna Talamantez at 213-438-8742 or dtalamantez@golinharris.com.
Video is also available at http://www.thenewsmarket.com/Nintendo.

Sony's press sites are password protected, though there appears to be a generic login available for one of them.
I'm unsure if I can share it however as it is not labeled guest/temporary, but I will look into it.

PlayStation Press Center: http://presscenter.playstation.com/

This is Sony Computer Entertainment America's press site.
You can download artwork, logos, press releases, product packshots etc.

Sony PressVault: http://www.sceuk-press.net/

This is Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's press site. Operates as the one for SCEA, but I do not think there is any guest pass for this site.
I haven't heard of one anyhow, but if anyone knows please tell.

General press releases are available here: http://us.playstation.com/corporate/about/press-release/

Electronic Arts

EA has two press sites, one for North America and one for Europe (well, UK to be specific).

EA NA Press Site: http://www.info.ea.com/

Features press releases, product packshots and screenshots mainly. Mostly supplied in JPEG format,
but videos are available in high quality (many in 1080p format). No password needed for download.

EA EU Press Site: http://ea.gamespress.com/

Similar to the NA site, but features files in other formats than JPEG. Password is needed for download though.
If you need express access, contact Owen Crane contactUKPR@ea.com. Otherwise, you can simply register on the site,
but it's for UK media only.

Ubisoft Press Extranet: http://ubisoft-press.com/

In 2012, Ubisoft changed some things regarding its press site. Now everything's password protected. Most material will be available on other press sites as well though.

If you want even more material to choose from, I recommend you register an account on Games Press: http://gamespress.com/

This site has more than 45,000 registered users from all areas of the gaming industry, including fan sites.
Assets are provided directly by developers and publishers, and you can find just about anything here.

Mainly it's press releases, artwork and release dates. Every year there is an E3 section with press kits from most companies.
There are several accounts to choose from, there is a free account (marked as "lite") where you have access to most files,
but some contain watermarks and some are indexed in ways that prevent you from downloading them.

Games Press Pro gives access to all files without watermark. For (freelance) journalists this is obviously the best choice.
$8.50/£5.00 gives you access to download 100 images (items) without watermarks.
There's also Games Press Elite (costs £120 a month) which gives even more power, but that's irrelevant in relation to E3.

One site that can also be very useful during E3 is Business Wire: http://www.businesswire.com
If you need stock or editorial images, image agency Getty Images is an excellent choice: www.gettyimages.com/

This requires no password and many companies, Nintendo for example, use this service for press releases. Easy to navigate and the search function is great.

But now that we are done with that, let's get to the list of news sources:

Gaming/tech media

General media

All of these attended E3 last year, so there should be news about the event coming.

If you have suggestions on sites to add to the list, just post as a reply and I will see what I can do.

Unconfirmed Member
Below is a list of the more notable exhibitors. I shall mention that this is a not full list of exhibitors, as I have taken the liberty to exclude some (smaller studios and non-gaming companies).

The full list of exhibitors, as I've linked before, is available here: http://www.e3insider.com/exhibitors-list/

For the benefit of journalists, I have supplied links to press/news sites of each individual exhibitor. Some are password protected, some are open. Most of the assets that will be released will also be available through services such as Gamespress and Virtual Press Office etc.

http://uplay.com/ Is another Hub for the Ubi presser
and http://e3.eu.playstation.com/ for Sony.

Awesome work, thanks.

Edit: Don't know of you want to include that but you can watch the Sony conference on your Vita. And the GT stream will also be avaible through the XBL and iOS app. While Gamespot is also hosting on Twitch http://en.twitch.tv/gamespot

Afterwards this post can be deleted if this thread is supposed to be empty, lol - sorry

Of course you haven't ruined anything. I am more than happy to receive feedback and help. :)

I have now updated the exhibitors & games list with the titles I could find from press releases. Will continue to update it today.

Maybe it's my work filter, but the images don't work on my phone either. And on Chrome they show up as broken images.

Is it just me or won't the images load?
I've tried in Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera. The images show up for me and I have no cookies store from elsewhere than NeoGAF. Most of the images in this thread are vector based (SVG). That might be a problem for some browser configurations. Try flushing cache. Also, all files are hosted on Google Drive but set for public access.

If this turns out to be a widespread problem, I will convert the images to raster format.

If you want to add a countdown for each conference try this. Might help people.

Thanks for the thread OP!

Images have been converted to raster format and rehosted (to Abload.de). Hopefully nobody should have problems viewing them now (on any browser or device).

Gonna be looking out for the best streams. Some streams are delayed more than others. If I recall, for the Xbox One Reveal, the Gametrailers stream was ahead of the others.

Looking forward to this, guys and girls!

Did anyone look at the show floor? Anyone here can tell me who are the reserved spaces for? It's really intriguing...

Jun 12, 2009
Sorry for this silly question but... Do you need to be a subscriber to these websites that provide live streaming or is it free for all?

Aug 7, 2005
You folks better save this page since, you know... when the show begins, GAF will be down for most of the time.

Awesome thread Rösti, it's going to be such a great E3 this year!

I'm expecting GAF to be down for pretty much the whole thing, so I'll see you guys on the other side ;)

OP, i was thinking about making a thread but I think maybe it would be better suited in here.
If we can make a collection of sites that will serve as a contingency plan in the probable chance that NeoGaf Goes down. Places that doesn't need a registration so that users can quickly jump in the second Gaf goes down, also place that is easy to use.

So if persons could list maybe any
IRC channels with instructions on how to access them.
TinyChat channels
Twitch channels
ustream channels
G+ hangouts?

One of the best thing about E3 are the comments/reactions/news from gaffers And i would love to be able get as much NeoGAF content and Experiences as I can this E3 season.

@methane47: I have added a "Where to Connect" section with information on chat channels. I posted those I know about at the moment, will update if more are mentioned.

I'm also currently updating the list of streams.
