Sony's conference had over a decade and a half of expectation, hopes and dreams behind it.
Whereas Microsoft's and Nintendo's conferences were decent, they were mostly them going through their paces and not really showing anything ground breaking, whereas Sony's conference felt like a revival of golden era for console games, the ones I want to see and play, the ones I once dreamt or believe that could exist but then started to dismiss that they ever could.
I feel like the past decade of E3s made me a cynic and appreciate and suspect publishers much more, to expect the worst from all of them. This year's E3, or in particular Sony's conference single-handedly made me believe that promises can be great and games that were influential and charming to me over a decade ago, are still as engaging and stimulating today, whereas in all of Microsoft's conference with their Ford advertisement, sorry, the new Forza, all of their shooters and games for the "hardcore" market, the best thing in their entire showing was a schmup with an art style inspired by 1930's cartoon's.
Sony has been the most daring company in terms of supporting original ideas and while most of them might not be the most refined or best ones ever created, I feel like they are helping to usher in a great new era for console games. I had that impression when they unveiled the Playstation 4 and this year's E3 all but confirmed it.
Sony's conference made me believe again, and if I have to wait another decade for one like this year's, then I'll be glad to wait.
