EDGE #203 Review Scores (Infamous, Punch-Out & Ghostbusters)

I didn't participate in any Excite Bots threads cos I do like the game, but would have been posting counter to the whole EXCITE philosophy, which I love.

For me -

- red bars should have been more optional. Tracks shouldn't have bottlenecked into a red bar all the time, you should have had a choice between doing the rhythmic wheel gyrating to get a massive boost, or just ploughing on ahead. Thats the case with some yellow bars, and things like that...

- custom soundtracks should not have been removed. This particular complaint is Nintendo's fault - ie. their stupid aversion to the MP3 format as of Photo Channel 1.1

- the base soundtrack is simply not as good as Excite Truck's.

Ultimately, I think playing it and playing online are both a blast, its really quirky and inventive and quite unlike other racers - some of the bot designs are cool - so its a worthwhile release. But if you were to ask me which would I have rather had: Excite Bots or Excite Truck 2? I'd of gone with the latter I think.

The Ghostbusters review is fairly positive saying it just falls short of being one of the greatest movie tie-in games of all time.

here's what they say at the end:

With a little more in the way of technical polish and a few more hours of playtime thrown in, this would have been one of the best film-based games of all time. As is, it's a great effort.

Fuel Diary:

- Guiness Book of World Records. On the map.
- Shitty gameplay videos. Off the map.
- Edge Score. On the map.

Verdict: Need a demo.

What are they implying by "technical polish?" Shots of the game look good, so is it framerate, clipping, etc.? Ghostbusters seems like it could be a good throwaway game to play. Not too serious, nostalgic, proton packs, Egon. And Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. How can this not be good?

Infamous is a pretty good game; busting through Warren now. Did Edge mention chain link fences being impossible to climb but Cole and random poles being like dirt to a Hoover? Good game, but also not. Tom Chick's method of review seems spot on; it's both fun and infuriating.

fixed?

I guess there's a version that now has a little more time for some technical polish now.

Holy shit at the Excitebots score.....a 4 REALLY? Basically the equivalent to the IGN godhand review....28 points lower than the lowest review out there on metacritic and scores it 40 points lower than the average.

Oh the complaining over critic opinions thread?

People complain when a reviewer scores a game that doesn't match well with most sites (Twilight Princess), then people complain when a game gets pretty much the same reception across all sites when they felt that it was undeserving (GTA IV).

If the gaming industry wants to evolve it has to get rid of this immaturity.

The Muramusa scores upset me. I was really looking forward to that game.

Edge has never really liked Vanillaware's games. Or more so never really "got" them (like most of Gaf). They gave Odin Sphere the same score, which was awesome so I'm sure I'll enjoy Muramasa as well.

Though if your curious the Gaf import reception is that the game is good and much more action oriented then Odin Sphere but also much more simpler battler system.

in before the "oh no, my favourite exclusive only got a seven" followed by "an EDGE seven is a GOOD SCORE" followed by "EDGE and Eurogamer should just stick to the fucking Metacritic scale, FFS" followed by "EDGE and EG are the only ones doing it right, they're using the full scale" followed by "it's not like EG or EDGE are credible in any way. EDGE are biased toward English games, and Eurogamer don't even play the games before the review" followed by "its hardly fair to judge a publication over the actions of one writer" followed by "they don't use bylines, they are asking for it. they chose to publish it" followed by "b-b-b-but the Sims 3 scored higher and 50 Cent got a 7 too!" followed by "GO SUCK A FUCKING DICK"
I read this as a crimp.

Wait, ZENO CLASH got an eight!? I take everything back. Edge is declared credible, no one disagrees, thread prospers, sun shines, virgins are deflowered etc etc

I'd like to nominate this as best post ever ^

Great score for Ghostbusters, I had a bad feeling it was going to be utter balls, but I would have picked it up anyway, now I can do so with a little more faith that I won't be wasting my dosh

SUPER LOL BAR
:lol

Best post in the thread. I hear there are a lot of people having trouble doing several things at once, so that's perhaps why they didn't like Excite Bots. Beside the game being not mature/badass/etc. enough. I agree about the red bars though. They should only appear seldomly. But I haven't played the game.

I give their review 3 Super Leg Smashes out of 5.

That Excite Bots review is bizarre, but oh well -- I still love the game :) It does sound like they didn't "get" the whole star/trick thing about the game though.

"Get" either in that they didn't understand it, or didn't care for it. Either way, I'll just consider the review an outlier and enjoy the game :D

So, are people going to defend factual errors in the ExciteBots review?

I would like to see two things: 1.) Their stats, as far as ranking in all the cups go, and 2.) their online stats.

You can only give EB that low of a review if you suck at it. You can only suck at it that bad if you didn't play it much, and never played excite truck. Both games aren't really a lot of fun until you get them, and get decent at them. EB is similar enough to ET that you can be good as soon as you start the game.

But yeah, there's a factual error, just in that tiny snippet we got. There is NOT excessive rubber-banding. Simple as that. That's not an opinion. Hell, I'm not sure there's ANY.

I don't feel like reading it right now, but I'll do it in the morning if nobody else has.

Are there no Fifa fan sites who post scans within 2 seconds of the magazine hitting subscribers like every other major franchise?

So, is anyone actually going to post the FIFA 10 info or am I the only one who gives a shit?
I'm looking over at other fifa-centric forums, and there isn't an inkling of what's new in Fifa10!! HARGH its like people who got this issue received an NDA form along with it

Well, only thing I've found out is that they've added 360 degree dribbling and smartened up the look of Manager Mode a bit.

It feels like I stepped back 10 years. :lol

Haha bleargh....info's not really new then, I guess we have to wait a little bit longer to learn more since they're still taking feedback from the community (maybe GDC Leipzig?!?). For what its worth, I'm glad they added in the 360degree controls though; I think it means they've gotten it right in terms of animation to finally implement it (no abrupt cuts when turning, proper foot planting and trapping, etc - looking at you fucking PES/WINNINGELEVEN!)

When are people going to stop taking their review scores seriously, they are a complete joke,

Fear 2 - 8
Motorstorm - 8
Sega Rally - 7
Quake Wars - 8
Alone in the dark 7
Far Cry 2 - 8

VS

KZ2 - 7
Valkyrie chronicles - 7
God of War 2 - 7
Infamous - 7
Motorstorm 2 - 7
Fallout 3 - 7
Excitebots: Trick Racing - 4 (lol)

It's the people complaining who are taking the scores too seriously.

Everyone who isnt complaining has some perspective and/or grounding in reality.

So, we can't complain about incorrect reviews?

It's not like I'm not going to hold the owner of EDGE hostage over their ridiculous ExciteBots score...I'm going to voice how ridiculous and incorrect it is. Grounding in reality...jesus...you're on a video game forum, and in a thread about review scores on a video forum. What the fuck do you expect to hear?
