Was Halo 3 really so much better than ...

Resistance 2 >- 6
Killzone 2 >- 7

In terms of full experience and features? I think so.

But its all about how great said features were to each player; so of course theres always going to be a differing opinion, and theres nothing wrong with that.

You can always tell who doesn't actually read Edge when they make accusations of bias against them. The editorial of the magazine has had quite a positive Sony/PS3 slant for at least a couple of years now.

forgive me for dodging the counter, but aren't you kind of sick of having the exact same conversation in EDGE threads after a game you're excited for scores low, or a game you're not excited for scores high?

It's draining.
Can't ever remember having this convo about a game scoring low.

Just like my UK mags to be consistent.

ODST is getting universal love in the official thread, yet the usual Halo trolls (and Sony fanboys) who haven't even played the game are claiming the game's getting good scores because of the name or moneyhats or whatever. Not only the review score threads, but anywhere there's a discussion about FPS games you can be sure Halo trolls will be present in big numbers. It's getting annoying at this point, I wish someone would do something about this.
Not at all. It deserves the scores. But does it deserve the Edge score? That's the question. A 9 on other websites is usually a 7 in Edge. But not in this case. And innovation is one of the things they usually scream about when they justify a low score.

I don't actually think Edge is biased (well, at least not along platform lines), I just think they're incredibly inconsistent when it comes to criteria to judge games on and as such are about as shitty as every other gaming publication when it comes to reviews.

I feel uncomfortable and I'm okay with that.

A few quotes from the Demon's Souls review;

"Demon's Souls unforgiving mechanics border on the abusive. But stick it out, and with acclimatisation comes the realisation that From Software is trying to change the nature of dungeon crawlers, and that it's uncomprimising vision is nothing short of revolutionary."

"Demon's Souls has more in common with Geometry Wars than Lord of the Rings. In this world, failure is inevitable, success won by repeating areas time and time again, perfecting technique to level-up your real-life skills rather than merely on-screen numbers."

"Fools rush in, Demon's Souls is quick to teach, for fools end up squished under the boot of a 50-foot tall shining knight."

"Demon's Souls is the antithesis of the fashionable approach to gaming. It encourages mastery over mere perseverance and every reward is so hard won as to make it almost unattainable. But if gaming's ultimate appeal lies in the learning and mastering of new skills, then surely the medium's keenest thrills are to be found in it's hardest lessons. For those who flourish under Demon's Souls strict examination, there's no greater sense of virtual achievement."

my memory must be shot. I've been this road a million times before, in any case. I'm not doing it again. ;)

I both want this and don't want this. Sounds like the time investment would be totally worth it, but it'll have to wait until after exams.

I may not have been your sparring partner, though we have sparred before now :) Now you enjoy your Vegimite, and I'll enjoy my Marmite.

I'm going to wait until spring when no good games are out. Then I should be able to sink the time necessary to get somewhere with this game.

Wow.. very nice score for Demon's Souls.

I've been on the fence about this game for the longest time. (Big big RPG fan here) Almost everyone mentions how hard this game is with quotes like "be prepared to die a lot" or things to that affect. Its got me nervous. Do I need to man up GAF? Do I? I consider myself an average gamer if that helps.

They gave Fable 2 a 9? I thought Edge was supposed to be some hard as hell review mag? Just seem inconsistent to me.

Could someone provide me with a quote from the Dead Space Extraction review? Thanks in advance.

Dead Space Extraction 8/10

"The title of Best On-Rails Gun Game Ever isn't the most prestigious, so let's try this; Dead Space Extraction is the Citizen Kane of on-rails gun games, or at the very least the Towering Inferno. But where other on-rails games sit comfortably within walls that have existed since Virtua Cop, Extraction thrashes about until the walls buckle. It's better designed, writen, acted & directed than 99% of any genre's games."

"An on-rails shooter it may be, but those rails are a work of art. With barely a pause for breath they plunge, bank and sometimes even break, launching you into the unknown before you crash onto a new, entirely unexpected course."

"Dead Space was a meticulously engineered survival horror, and the creepiest thing about Extraction is the ease with which it pulls that apart and rebuilds it as somthing else."

"Extraction is not just a gun game that happens to work on Wii; it's a gun game that couldn't work on anything else. Meanwhile, it's sharp writing, multinational cast and knockout looks, which owe a lot to some very moody lighting, lend it a multiplex charm that more than makes up for one notable foul-up; a poorly signposted boss battle."

I can't fucking believe the gave Shift an 8, this can't be right, the game sipped with broken controls and physics fuck fuck fuck I hate EA.

Take that you all Mini Ninjas haters. The game's actually pretty good. Kind of bland and unappealing, but kind of pretty good and appealing. If you know what I mean. I'm disappointed there was no achievement for laying an egg though.

Why do people whine when Halo receives good reviews? Why cant you guys accept that its good but not for you??

I dont particularly like the Metriod Prime games but i appreciate that they are good games.

As for ODST (I was not going to buy this initially) the single player is a different take on Halo, and it works. Its a testament to Halo's gameplay, you can throw a new campaign where you are weaker, slower than the original, with dated graphics and still come up with a winner.

Its Halo but far more atmospheric. I guess Metriod Prime and Halo mixed.

What to believe, what to believe...

the assessment of Edge by some guy on the internets with a ratchet and clank avatar, or one of the finest gaming magazines still in print today

Seriously, maybe the reviewer just thinks its a good game and thats the score it deserves?

Perfect.

Pre-EE Witcher deserved nothing more than that 5. It'd be interesting to see them re-review it under these new circumstances.

Fable remains a series that does nothing for me personally but I can appreciate why others might think it's great.

But ignore all that reason and ask yourself why you're laughing over someone having a differing opinion to you.

GAF has a much larger squad of PS3 fanboys who love to cry about Edge's "biased" review scores.
Sorry, I'm not one of them. I don't care about scores and I'm not a fanboy, they could give U2 a -5 for all I care. But calling Edge THE finest piece of gaming journalism out there? I mean, come on..

Print wise? Probably is.

Boooooo ODST > Halo 3 in every aspect.

oh well.
The core game, yes. But the feature set is clipped a bit, and since that was part of the reason they gave Halo 3 a 10, the score makes sense.

Id say it is. Show me something that you feel is really good.

I can't believe that nobody cares about Wardevil. My copy of Edge just arrived and, along with having the cover, the pics look pretty amazing.
