Endless Ocean, official quiet long river thread (Amir0x approved)

Damn you, and this thread, to hell. I really didn't need to buy another game for the Wii.
It's only $30 - and you get an interactive experience of Blue Planet.
Instead of just looking at lush exciting awesome footage, you're actually exploring it on your own.

It's only $30 - GET IT.

:D

Okay- time for some music mix uploads.

One thing, though- silly as I am, I forgot to keep track of exactly which tracks are in which order on these mixes. But, if you're downloading them, you're likely relatively familiar with the source musics, so that shouldn't be too big an issue.

Number one comes from Finding Nemo.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/4un0se

Warning- one of the tracks contained herein is, I found out too late, far too upbeat for a game like EO. Be warned.

Number 2 is a LOST mix.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ikez20

Containing tracks from Seasons 1 & 2 (and starting with "Locke'd Out Again"), this is my favorite out of the three. Just about everything fits the ocean theme perfectly.

Number 3 is a bit more eccentric. It's Wind Waker music, Metroid Prime music, Bioshock music, fan-made remixes of some game tunes, and maybe something else, too (I've honestly forgotten).

http://www.sendspace.com/file/s8zzhu

Enjoy.

If there's enough call for it, I'll gladly try to put a tracklist together for these. Until then, though, respect the sea!

EDIT: Gah- link 3 was wrong.

I just can't get over how atmospheric this game is. I'm only about 2-3 hours into it, but the level of detail is absolutely amazing. Does anyone have an estimate for how much "land" is actually available to explore here, because creating this much unique undersea content is no mean feat. I'm just constantly and consistently impressed by what Arika was able to pack in here.

^^ I'm loving this too. I was still working my way through SMG when this came in and, honestly, I've been choosing this ever since. (Not saying SMG isn't brilliant - it is - but this fits my mood right now, for some reason.)

I think it's the hidden gem for the Wii right now, which is both good and bad. It's good that I've been able to experience and enjoy it, but it's bad that more people don't know about it. Why Nintendo hasn't been more assertive about this release I'll never know, but I'm glad they released it all the same.

My favorite parts (so far) are the abyss and some of the more spectacular caves. The sense of immersion is amazing - never quite experienced it in a game before. Great work Arika!!

i'm really enjoying it so far, and your partner on the boat is pretty hot for a standard definition computer rendering with no voice.

really? I was pretty impressed with how not hot they made her for a videogame character. I mean I'm not attracted to polygons ever, but it was clear to me they tried to design her as awkwardly as possible.

At least I thought so!

Is there any 'point' to fast-forwarding to the next season? I've beat the story and pretty thoroughly explored everywhere and I'm still in the first month. If I skip to the next season will I see some new creatures / have more stuff to find unlocked?

OK, so I just got this game in today. I had a hard time finding since my most of my stores were out of it but my local Best Buy finally got it in stock.

So, what would be the best music to load onto my SD card to start the beginning mood off right? I haven't even started playing yet. So what would you recommend for the first time player?

The in-game music is pretty good, with the exception of the boat music. And Hayley gets really annoying the third time one of her songs repeats during an exploration.

I like all of the mixes gaffers have posted here, but I have to say that Flynn's mixes are particularly awesome. My single favorite mix to dive with is my (totally instrumental) Pink Floyd mix, but that's personal vision at work ;)

Just put on a bunch of Mario underwater music on the card for a while. I'm really enjoying this game. It's a really laid back approach and just really enjoyable to play.

I've played the past ~15 hours with the music muted listening to World Service, very VERY relaxing... I'm approaching 40 hours playtime(!), although I just found the Beluga which I think was the last major unlockable, and can't be too far from a "100% scan" (what is the pay-off for a complete sealife guide?)

This is definately an under-explored genre! Any recomendations for similar games (that aren't shovelware crap) other than to-be-released Afrika and Aqua?

This is really weird but I can't find the ruins. It's like they disappeared.
Huh? Move your boat to Marige Atoll (D-6), dive, turn around (180) and swim a few meters to trigger the loading screen.

I took a break after I "finished" the game, but went back today.

I find the ruins to be the least enjoyable area of the game - I get totally lost, and the controls don't work so well in such enclosed spaces. And the one-way doors are just stupid. I don't think I've found all the stone tablets, and I have no idea where to look for the missing one(s).

I found the last piece of the
idol. The emails related to it were some of my favorite moments in the game. Is IT the megashark I saw somewhere in the thread?

Looks like I'm going to miss my deadline on two boat critters: emperor penguins and Cape fur seals. I've tried going all over the map, and all I seem to get recently is sea lions, Weddell seals, boobies, polar bears, and the odd cormorant and iguana. Fish photography is awesome, boat photography not - being dependent on luck sucks. I know some critters are more common in some areas than others, but given that there's no indication in the encyclopedia which... argh.

EDIT: Gah- link 3 was wrong.

Thanks for posting these; I hadn't even considered the use of Lost music in this game. Now that I hear it though, it really is rather fitting. We should make a separate thread just for posting Endless Ocean mixes, with the original post being updated to contain them all.

Ok, I finally bit the bullett and bought a Wii just because of this game. I am a saltwater enthusiast and have 3 saltwater tanks. I've only played about an hour of the game, but the variety of fish is amazing and a lot of fun for me is trying to name the fish before my diver does. Excellent game.

...and my Wii purchase story is a bit unusual. First store I went to had them in stock. So from the time I decided to purchase the system to the time I had one was a 10 minute drive to my local gamecrazy.

Also purchased Zak and Wiki, Mario Galaxy, and Wii Play

Zak and Wiki - once you get to the puzzles, it is fun. However, the intro was irritating.

Mario Galaxy - I'm not as enamored as most. For whatever reason, I'm not digging the running around on the little planets. Once I get to a horizontal surface, I like it.

you've been blessed with a happy wii ownership. cherish it ; )

congrats. just today i was thinking of what i'd name 'the essential wii collection' - games you can either play nothing like on any other system, or ones which stand out as the pinnacle of their respective genres, and i came up with the following (which you may consider in the future, seeing how you have already started on the right track):

excite truck
zack & wiki
endless ocean
re4wii
smg
prime corruption
gwg
wii play/wii sport

and these are just the must-plays, as there are many lesser-but-still-unique-and-fun or stellar-but-totally-niche wii titles deserving a serious gamer's attention.

someone explain to me, with the guide requests, how do you find the certain fish the person is looking for ? Ex: i need to show him a humphead wrasse

How do mp3s work in this game? I dive and then i try to select a song but its all ???? marks
on the boat, go to the side opposite the girl. there should be a box there I forget what its called. but it opens your SD card music files and you can import the one you want to listen to on that dive. Then when you go to dive, the song pops up on the scrolling list at the bottom.

theres no trick to it, its pretty random. just keep searching. the humphead wrasse is large and blue and very easy to spot.

So I gotta do that each time? Cause I selected a song once, and then went diving and was able to select it. But the next day I went diving and I couldn't select it since I hadn't pre-selected it.

unfortunately yes thats how you have to do it.

So you can´t change the music during the dive?

Anyway, I am unlocking all musics ingame, but once I do that I think I´ll buy an SD just so I can use the custom Soundtrack.

Baiano19 said:

Nope... so when you do choose a custom song, make sure it's a good and long song.... if it's short and you're on a longish dive, you will get seriously annoyed, very, very quickly.

Got one more mix knocked up.

La Mer

A very large set of various Nine Inch Nails tracks, mostly instrumentals, from The Downward Spiral, The Fragile and Ghosts. Pretty much dark ambient stuff.

The Fragile - La Mer
Ghosts I - 1
Ghosts I - 6
Ghosts I - 9
The Downward Spiral - A Warm Place
Ghosts II - 13
Ghosts II - 17
The Fragile - Ripe (With Decay)
Ghosts IV - 28
Ghosts IV - 36
The Fragile - The Great Below

I tried this out from gamefly, it is def a nice change of pace. visuals are nice, but still seem a little dated to me, hopefully we could get something similar on the 360 or ps3

Okay, because we need to celebrate the unexpected fame of this cool gem called endless ocean, I decided to summarize all your proposition, links and mixes for the custom soundtrack you can listen while diving.
So I've divided it in three parts: youtube links, then gaffers' suggestions (find it by your own means!), and last but not least, the gaffers' downloadable custom soundtracks .
You know who to blame if I missed something.
See you on post #2000!

So. I bought this game the other day, and popped it in to try it out today. And I wanted to write a bit about it.

I've always thought that I have no video-games to relax. Whenever I'm tired or beat and try to cheer myself up through the power of videogaming, I'd always get a bit frustrated, since most games aren't exactly the kind that you can set your brain to autopilot on with.
For this reason I was initially interested in Endless Ocean, but never really followed up on it until a sort-of impulse buy this past week.

Popping the game in, I already got good vibes (the intro song is great), but the moment I really got what the game is about is when you first set foot on the boat. I sat down on the chair that let's you view out to the ocean, and I got it.

This is a game you can relax with.
It is still a game, there are still objectives and collectathons and whatnot. But none of that matters.

I'm glad I bought this now. Except now I need to reorganize my music, previously attuned to EXCITE Truck =/ Not very dive-friendly, that.

You tell me. I now have two SD cards for that very reason.

Congrats on your awesome purchase. It's one of my favourite Wii games to be quite honest.

PS.: Look through the thread for some nice music suggestions.

My dad recently bought a Wii, and he picked this game up. I'm hoping it's what he uses to unwind after he gets out of the hospital next week, since it's so awesomely mellow.

yes! just got this, its for a lady that just received a wii for her bday (shes around 45) so i'm sure she'll have fun with it. the hype is killing me! With the soundtrack capabilities this game is sure to be pure relaxing genius. Cant wait to play w/life aquatic soundtrack :D

Love this game even though I haven't played it for quite some time, I really wish I had an SD card because some of my own music would heighten the experience beyond measure. Also this thread is very nice and friendly, the charm of the game must of rubbed off!

I think the music of Susumu Yokota would go very well with Endless Ocean, for example:

Picked this up yesterday. Amazing stuff! I really wasn't expecting to like it all that much, but I absolutely adore it!

It was an innocent remark at seven o'clock in the morning after pulling an allnighter. It was even two posts after your summary. I apologize. :lol

Please teach me how to appreciate this game. I really wanted to like it but I dont see whats fun about it. How do you guys play the game? when you come in to a new area what do you do first? what kind of goal do you set for yourself etc?

Sometimes I can completely change my mind about games. Im playing Pokemon mystery dungeon right now. I hated it at first but once I learned to appreciate it for what it is i started to love it.

I don't set a goal for myself.

There's NOTHING that will ever beat just... being part of the ocean. Something so humongous in size, so ridiculously old, the starting point of all life as we know it, moving at a totally different pace, sometimes outright alien. Watching the lives of millions of animals of all sizes unfold around you. Floating weightless through a world so intricate, so fragile, and yet so deadly. It's just breathtakingly beautiful. Well, maybe floating outside the spaceshuttle or taking a walk on mars might beat this experience, but hey, that's unattainable for >99.999% of us.
/zips up pants
Oh god I want to go diving again. ;_;

Errr... anyway... EO can't ever hope to come close to the real experience, but it definitely is the next best thing. You can just let this artificial ocean embrace you, carry you away. With a tiny bit of suspension of disbelief you can really let go and just do whatever you want to. There is a bunch of objectives for you to strive for if you feel like it, the underwater world is quite huge and diverse, there are animals of all sizes crawling, swimming, flying throughout this tiny little universe. It's a totally unobstrusive non-game-y game. It never really forces you to do anything. You can play it at your own pace. It's a really weird take on the sandbox genre if you want to see it that way.
