Engadget - Vita gets a second lease on life

What a delusional article

It seems like a lukewarm press conference is enough to make many people forget about a fact or two

You better, because this is what a price cut is supposed to do.

Really? Have they quoted an expected adoption rate?

I think you might be making that up. Obviously it's expected to increase sales, but I doubt anyone at Sony is expecting to see a huge and immediate effect. It'll take a little time to gather momentum.

In Japan, it is selling about double what it was before the price cut. The Japanese are still active on PSP though. Vita software sales seem to have improved lately although still low. Enough are selling to be a sustainable niche device at least.

Umm that is merely currently with the holiday boost. It was selling around 10k before, that should tell you all you need to know.

Wow nice facts you got there.

Oh for fucks sake, forget stuff like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed, even fucking Lego Batman 2 doesn't measure up on Vita.

If you think Borderlands 2 for Vita will equal the console versions, you are going to be sorely disappointed.

I'm pumped for Terraria and Spelunky. Leave the AAA console franchises on the consoles where they belong.

Fez. Hotline Miami. Spelunky. Whatever. All cool games, all games I can play on a million other platforms.

You can't play them on the go. I personally prefer playing the indies on my Vita, instead of my PC. Screen is beautiful, controls are great and you can take them anywhere (and often Cross-Play them with the PS3). Not to mention the games that are actually exclusive, like the brilliant Velocity Ultra.

Muaraski Baby looks great btw.

The thing is that Sony seems to be offering lots of deals to indies to make their indie games work across more Playstation family products. And Sony has followed the iOS store lead of a single purchase works across multiple device types. Even if Vita fails to improve its sales numbers, the fact is that people who own one have a fantastic portable indie machine with games that didn't require a separate purchase from their PS3/PS4 indie purchase. That is incredible value to me.

Memory cards on the high end do need to be reduced though. $80 for 32GB is highway robbery in 2013.

Honestly I have Uncharted on Vita via PS+ and I still haven't gotten around to playing it because it seems like I need to devote a lot of time sitting down with headphones to give an Uncharted game its due on there. And a portable game system shouldn't be flooded with games that need that level of time investment per play period.

Rogue Legacy? Now that's perfect.

Still doesn't have nearly enough mid-range Japanese games for my liking - the kind of stuff the psp got (and still gets a fair amount of even in 2013) in spades - half minute hero, maverick hunter, prinny, all those jrpg's, etc.

I mean I suspect I'll buy one next year now danganronpa is getting a localisation, but the kind of games I look for just don't seem to be there in large numbers.
Disgaea 3 is available, 4 is coming. The Atelier series is available with more coming. Demon Gaze and a bunch of other similar titles are coming. I don't see how a fan of Japanese games could be too disappointed. Plus you can play many of the PSP ones on it.

While I like the idea of having a portable device that plays all these indie games and a dash of AAA titles with controls that offer proper tactile feedback, those memory card prices are gonna have to come down before I start seriously thinking about picking one up. I was hoping the memory card price cuts were going to be deeper than what they wound up being.

Indies are great an all, but I also want some meaty stuff as well. I don't mind ports either as I prefer playing on handhelds.

Is there a Vita chalkboard yet?

Vita isn't worth a chalkboard until Sony throw a lot of big guns its way.

LOL? First of all, it's failing miserably.

- Pretty much every Vita game is available on a console
- Sony is pushing for PSV/PS3/PS4 multis
- Persona 4 is a console port and considered the best game on the platform
- Uncharted is a console like experience and the best selling game on the platform

How are they not trying to turn Vita into a mini PS3?

And indies have been on Vita for a long time now, ain't nobody buying one to play those random $5 games. Chile.

Yall are in a rude awakening in the NPD August/September thread.

It would be good for the industry if the Vita started selling much better but I think this post is true.

I don't see how anything they've shown changes the Vita's situation, at all.

As people buy PS4's, sign up for PS+ with access to free PSP and PSV games, buy PS1 classics, and buy indie titles that happen to be Crossbuy, the attractiveness of PSV for those consumers will increase more and more to the point where it's a no brainer to buy the hardware to utilize the immense library of games you already have for it.

Right this minute nothing has changed. But getting more people into the PS+ ecosystem and buying Crossbuy indie titles will do nothing but improve the Vita's fortunes.

YAY FOR VITA!

I'm buying the fuck out of Minecraft if it isn't the dinky mobile version. And I'm soooo ready for Remote Play.

no more doom n gloom threads?

"scant initial line up" is a little revisionist. Not the best launch ever, but very extensive. It's been theorized in other editorial (Jimquisition I think) that Vita's launch drained their metaphorical balls, when much of that could have been spread throughout the first 6 months while waiting for Gravity Rush and whatnot. Somewhat true, since there was a relative drought from March to June, where nearly the only things that came out were Disgaea 3, Motorstorm RC & Pinball Arcade. Hasn't been one since, though, imo.

While we'll probably see Vita sales finally climb over 20,000 units here in the US for August, the increases won't be permanent and 3DS will continue to destroy it at retail. Indie games rarely appeal to the mainstream (and indies are a big part of Sony's strategy with Vita), memory card expenses still add to the baseline cost, and Sony's biggest IPs simply cannot compete on a wider scale with what Nintendo has in its stable.

Borderlands 2 was a bit of a surprise, but the game is long in the tooth. There are still almost no sports games on the platform. Call of Duty success was brief on Vita (though poor reviews probably didn't help).

I think these latest moves serve as a reminder that Sony hasn't forgotten about Vita, but in the grand scheme of things-- at least here in the US-- even the WiiU has a better chance of sales success medium & long term than Vita does.

That's definitely not what happened with PS3's first price drop.
Do you notice what you just did?

Every single person I know that owns a Vita (including myself) loves the thing to death. I even have a crazy awesome backlog. I really hope that more people pick one up!

Although it's likely to never happen, I'd lose it over a portable NHL game.

To add to that - all games I haven't played because I am not and have never been a PC gamer. Neither am I so much of a console gamer these days (I rarely win the battle for the TV). In the last few months the Vita has started to look like it was designed specifically with me in mind, to the point it seemed rude not to buy one.

The Vita situation is easier to fix. Sony is fixing it slowly, and maybe not exploring all their options, but it's competition is much different. It has more wriggle room because people are more open to having multiple portable tablets and portable consoles versus stationery ones.

Like I said it sold around 10k for a period of time after the price cut and is currently between 10-20k depending on game release, I'm sorry but that's very little impact if you consider per unit revenue.

We're counting per unit revenue now? If each of those 10k additional sales is buying games as well as their console isn't that a better indication of how it's doing for Sony revenue wise?

I don't see what train of logic brought you to think that would be a significant boost, sure some may do that but the price of the system and memory cards ensures the amount will be very little due to price of entry and if the concept of console type gaming on the go was remotely popular the Vita wouldn't be facing the situation it is now.

Do people not realise we're talking about a console that Sony themselves believe will sell less than 5 million units this fiscal year. There's a reason why they made that prediction because the situation is dire. Even if it beats that prediction it'll still most probably be god awful sales. People need to keep they're expectations in check.

If you have that information blow me away but vita's software situation has still been terrible for all but niche games. It hasn't improved that much.

Why would I be excited about 1-2 year old ports?

Note: I have a Vita with Hotline Miami and will buy Spelunky next week. The idea of getting a lot of year-old indie games on the Vita does not fill me up with excitement about the platform, sorry.

For me it's being able to play these anywhere now.

Disgaea 3 is available, 4 is coming. The Atelier series is available with more coming. Demon Gaze and a bunch of other similar titles are coming. I don't see how a fan of Japanese games could be too disappointed.

This is a list of retail PSV games I would buy if I were to get one today:

Gravity Rush
Disgaea 3
P4G
Ys on release
Danganronpa on release
non buggy VLR
maybe Soul Sacrifice if the combat isn't boring

Maybe you could tell of this "bunch" on the horizon?

Plus you can play many of the PSP ones on it.

So? I can play them on my PSP too...

Lego Batman doesn't because for some reason they port up from the DS version rather than port down from the console version.

Just wish it had a few more AAA games. To round it out.
I think it will get a few more now that it will presumably be selling a bit better. I think Tearaway will quietly be one of the best portable games this year. So it's getting AAA, just not every month. I think TGS will have big announcements too.

If you have that information blow me away but vita's software situation has still been terrible for all but niche games. It hasn't improved that much.

Do you have the exact figures of how much Sony is making per unit sold then? Dragon's Crown Vita outsold the PS3 version didn't it? And how are the digital titles doing? We can talk about sales numbers, sure (they're low), but it seems stupid to talk about revenue when we don't have a large amount of the picture.

Please point to where I said it would be "a significant boost". All I said was that they will continue to make the Vita a more attractive purchase with the more people they get into the PS+ ecosystem. And that's the bottom line. I own one, and it fits with Crossbuy purchases and PS+ freebies and discounts for me. I don't give a shit about how the system does vs 3DS or vs iPhone. The fact is that the system becomes more and more attractive as they continue to make deals with indie devs for crossbuys.

I hope it does pick up and more games are either ported or made for it because of the new popularity. I've loved it since launch and maybe this we'll get us some Tales or Monster Hunter games.

To be honest, the Vita has opened my eyes to more indie games than my PS3 and PC have done, truth told.

When it came to gaming on my console and PC, I usually (not always), just went big. Afterall, I paid a lot of money for my PS3, and build a kick ass gaming PC, so I want to push those bitches to their limits.

And despite the Vita's power (and it is a powerful handheld), I find it easier, and more acceptable, to play those indie titles like Spelunky, Dragon Fantasy, Thomas Was Alone, etc, on the Vita instead of my PS3 or PC. As a result, I've gotten into more and more indie titles thanks to the Vita.

And while I still want more Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Killzone, Tearaway, etc, on my Vita, I welcome this new deluge of indie titles as well. I'm eagerly awaiting Spelunky next week, and will pick it up asap. That thread with the list of Vita games is as exciting as it is intimidating. Just get me Terraria and Starbound on the Vita already, and there goes my life.

It would be nice if we got a localisation of Tales of Innocence R for a start...

Announced localizations are:
Demon Gaze
Dangan Ronpa
Sorcery Saga
Atelier Meruru+
Toukiden
Final Fantasy X/X-2
Ys Celcetta
Valhalla Knights 3
Ragnarok Odyssey Ace

Most likely guaranteed localizations are:
Dangan Ronpa 2
Atelier Rorona+
Corpse Party
Neptunia Rebirth
Chronos Materia
God Eater 2
Disgaea 4
Freedom Wars
Project Diva f 2nd might happen, depending on how Diva F does on PS3.

No internal memory really shot the Vita in the foot. Even 4GB would have been sufficient so you're not forced to buy one for games that require one.

Still, Gamescom showed that at least Sony still remembers the Vita exists. Hopefully they keep up the pace, or we'll just go back to where we were before.

Unfornatly, not their dev studios. And at this point, they never will.

Regardless of whatever is going on right now...

All of the Gamescom news points to the Vita selling MORE than what it used to be come Black Friday/ Holiday Time. (No matter how low the initial sales were in the beginning, Its gonna sell more, Thats what matters)

Hell, Gamescom sold Vitas to some Gaffers already..

The install base is growing. Instead of people celebrating that fact, They wish ill will on one of the greatest handheld hardware to ever be released...

You guys don't play games, You play sales charts on discussion forums.
